Border problem.

The Supreme Court didn't decide the issue of whether or not Texas can put up razor wire on the border. They merely declined to overturn a decision of the appellate courts refusing to enjoin the Feds from taking it down. That's not a "loophole" that's the Supreme Court properly resolving only the actual controversy in front of them. That's all they're supposed to do.

At some point, there is probably going to end up being a physical, possibly armed conflict between U.S. Border Patrol and Texas State personnel in Eagle Pass, Tx.

IMO, Abbott is looking for a "Ft. Sumter" type moment to happen in Texas.

Harris: House Republicans don’t want immigration fix because ‘they want a political issue to run on in November’

Vice President Harris is accusing House Republicans of resisting ongoing bipartisan negotiations over the border because “they want a political issue to run on” this year.

“Sadly, it has become so deeply partisan and the subject of then political gamesmanship, when in fact, the solutions are at hand,” Harris said when asked about the administration’s handling of immigration on Katie Couric’s iHeart podcast, “Next Question with Katie Couric.”

As the 2024 presidential election cycle heats up — with Biden running for reelection — and as Republicans spar with the administration over the border, immigration is top of mind for voters across the country.

A new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released this week found immigration has overtaken inflation as the top concern cited by most American voters.

But the parties of course see the issue very differently. While 81 percent of Republicans said conditions at the border are worsening, just 45 percent of Democrats said the same.

“The situation is such that the system is broken and it needs to be fixed, and we have offered a solution and real leaders ought to lead on this, meaning not play politics with it, but work with us to fix the problem,” Harris said on Couric’s podcast.

Romney: ‘Appalling’ Trump wants to kill border bill so he can ‘blame Biden’

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Thursday took aim at former President Trump for pushing Republican lawmakers to oppose a border deal so that he could use the issue to campaign against President Biden in the 2024 presidential election.

Romney told CNN’s Manu Raju he thought it was “really appalling” that Trump would try to prevent progress on addressing the surge in migration at the southern border.

“I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump,” Romney said. “And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is really appalling.”

“But the reality is that we have a crisis at the border, the American people are suffering as a result of what’s happening at the border, and someone running for president ought to try to get the problem solved as opposed to saying, ‘Hey, save that problem. Don’t solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later,’” Romney continued.

Romney’s remarks come after weeks of negotiations on a potential legislative package that addresses border security and provides funding for Ukraine and other allies. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his allies have warned that Republicans are unlikely to get a similar deal at any other moment, even if Trump wins reelection.

But Trump’s influence looms large over the party, especially among House conservatives, and the prospects for getting the deal through Congress with sufficient GOP support looks increasingly unlikely.

Last week, Trump made his position clear on social media when he wrote, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people.”

McConnell on Wednesday floated the possibility of splitting the national security package, noting border security reforms now increasingly look unlikely to pass.

A source told The Hill on Wednesday that Senate Republicans who support the bill think the concessions extracted from Democrats would be “huge wins,” but that it’s becoming clear Trump opposes the package, which could prevent its passage in the GOP-controlled House.

“The Trump people want to kill it and run on the issue,” the Senate source familiar with internal GOP talks told The Hill Wednesday.

GOP senators seethe as Trump blows up delicate immigration compromise

Senior Senate Republicans are furious that Donald Trump may have killed an emerging bipartisan deal over the southern border, depriving them of a key legislative achievement on a pressing national priority and offering a preview of what’s to come with Trump as their likely presidential nominee.

In recent weeks, Trump has been lobbying Republicans both in private conversations and in public statements on social media to oppose the border compromise being delicately hashed out in the Senate, according to GOP sources familiar with the conversations – in part because he wants to campaign on the issue this November.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged in a private meeting on Wednesday that Trump’s animosity toward the yet-to-be-released border deal puts Republicans in a serious bind as they try to move forward on the already complex issue. For weeks, Republicans have been warning that Trump’s opposition could blow up the bipartisan proposal, but the admission from McConnell was particularly striking, given he has been a chief advocate for a border-Ukraine package.

Now, Republicans on Capitol Hill are grappling with the reality that most in the GOP are loathe to do anything that is seen as potentially undermining the former president – and coming to terms with the fact that Trump is likely going to be their party’s standard bearer.

“I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn’t want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is is really appalling,” said GOP Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump.

He added, “But the reality is that, that we have a crisis at the border, the American people are suffering as a result of what’s happening at the border. And someone running for president not to try and get the problem solved. as opposed to saying, ‘hey, save that problem. Don’t solve it. Let me take credit for solving it later.’”

GOP Sen. Todd Young of Indiana expressed concern over the idea of the border deal being scrapped for political reasons, saying: “I hope no one is trying to take this away for campaign purposes.”

“I would encourage (Senate GOP negotiators) James Lankford and other conservatives to produce a work product with which they will shortly allow conservatives like myself to review it and take heart that there are a number of us who won’t be looking to third parties and assessing the propriety of passing this bipartisan proposal,” Young said.

It’s an all-too-familiar dynamic for the Republicans who served while Trump was in office, where he could easily derail legislative action on Capitol Hill with the blast of a single tweet or stir up a new controversy that Republicans were forced to respond to. And with Trump now marching toward the presidential nomination, Republicans are once again bracing for life with him as the nominee.

GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina – who has also been involved in the talks – said he didn’t know if anyone could convince Trump to not kill the deal. But he acknowledged that it would take some “courage” for members to be able to press ahead at this point in defiance of Trump – though Tillis argued it would ultimately be beneficial for Trump for them to pass a border security deal.

“I think this is when members of the Senate have to show some courage and do something that at the end of the day will be very helpful for President Trump,” Tillis said.

Asked whether it was a mistake for Trump to be assailing this deal, Tillis said: “I’ll leave it to him to figure out how he needs to get into office. I hope you’ll leave it to some of us who would support that effort to give him the tools he needs to really manage the border and the abuse and the dangerous situation we have today.”

For his part, McConnell – who has had zero relationship with Trump since the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack – downplayed Trump’s opposition saying, “It’s not anything new,” and insisting they were not abandoning the talks.

“We’re still working,” McConnell said. “Trying to get an outcome.”

Or maybe he’s just sick of this BS.

Illegal border crossings have always happened," said Eagle Pass fire chief Manuel Mello, who started as a local firefighter in the 1990s. "Groups of 10, 12 — that was a large group. But now you see 3,000 and 4,000 in one day. I never thought something like this could happen."

Absolute political horse s**t.

Mr. Trump may imagine he can strike his own border deal if he wins, but that’s highly unlikely. Democrats are willing to discuss asylum and parole changes now because President Biden and Democrats are suffering in the polls from the ugly scenes on television. If Mr. Trump returns to Washington, the left will revert to its factory settings of opposing all Trump priorities. Especially if Mr. Trump sabotages a bipartisan deal now.

Quite the Opinion piece. Pretty funny .

Good economic news forces the GOP to switch narrative to the border. There must be fear!

Opinion by Rex Huppke, USA TODAY

A message to all Americans, from the Republican Party:

Hello citizens of this amazing nation that President Joe Biden has singlehandedly burned down and made terrible!

We realize that for many months we have asked you to pay attention to the economy and be hopping mad at Biden and his “Bidenomics” for making everything so horrible.

Well, now we have a different request. Please DO NOT pay any attention whatsoever to the economy and instead focus entirely on the crisis along our southern border. Do not glance at how the stock market is doing, and under no circumstances check your 401(k) balances.

Economy is good, so we need you to worry about the border

Instead, you should be living in existential fear that at any moment, a swarm of violent migrants released from South American mental-health facilities will take over your home and enslave you.

Why the sudden change in focus? Well, it appears wokeness has infiltrated the economy, cynically causing the Commerce Department to report strong economic growth. That report – presumably written by socialists or possibly Marxists – drove headlines like “The U.S. economy grew at blistering 3.3% pace in Q4 while inflation pulled back” and “US economy grew at a shocking pace in the fourth quarter” and “US growth shatters expectations, boosting Biden’s economic pitch.”

AP
Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi said of the report released Thursday: “It’s just a perfect report. Strong growth and low inflation. Everything contributed to growth – consumers, businesses, government, housing, trade, inventories. All of the economic wheels were moving in the same direction.”

As a patriot and true conservative, it’s imperative you ignore any such nonsense and trust us that your life is terrible right now and Biden’s economy is an abject failure.

LOOK AWAY FROM THE ECONOMY, REPUBLICAN PATRIOTS!

To that end, please immediately pull your attention away from economic news and allow yourself to grow angrier and angrier about the border crisis.

What exactly is happening at the border? Oh, lots of things. Chaos! Murder! Hordes! More murder! Any fear you might have or any problem for which you need a scapegoat, it can be found down there.

And it’s all Biden’s fault, because when President Donald Trump was in office there were ZERO problems at the border. You know that’s true because we stopped talking about it while he was president. Trust us.

Republicans are dutifully addressing the border crisis by doing nothing

And rest assured, we Republicans are laser-focused on addressing all the horrific border problems we keep yelling about on Fox News. Our first step is to not address all the horrific border problems we keep yelling about, allowing you all, the voters, more time to become frightened as you listen to us yell.

As you may have heard, we’re backing away from a bipartisan border deal that includes a number of Democratic concessions and could be the best border deal we can ever hope to get.

We are doing this for you, the American people, so you can continue to hear us talk about the border situation as an existential threat to the country, the kind of existential threat we can totes put off for another year in the hope former President Trump gets elected again.

That makes sense, right?

Trump has told us not to fix the border, and we must obey Trump

LOOK OUT, THERE’S A MIGRANT BEHIND YOU!!

Whooof. That was close.

Anyway, the wise and powerful Trump doesn’t want us to do anything about the southern border because he’s worried it might make things better. If things get better, you all might feel less angry and start looking at the economy again. We can’t have that. Only a filthy liberal would want to fix a problem.

And remember, anger is the most patriotic emotion.

OH NO, A MIGRANT JUST TOOK YOUR JOB AND MOVED INTO YOUR LAKE HOUSE!! WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS END?!?

Get ready for a Republican border-palooza: all talk, all the time

Anyway, in the days and weeks ahead we will be filling conservative airwaves with nonstop talk about THE BIDEN BORDER CRISIS and BIDEN’S FAILED BORDER POLICIES and ARMAGEDDON MARCHING ACROSS OUR BORDERS. We will start fearmongering about a migrant caravan in 3, 2, 1 … there we go.

And many Republican leaders you know and love will visit the border to stand and yell scary things into TV cameras, howling about the problem they are in no way willing to address.

So, prepare your fear glands for the impending swelling, and don’t you dare take your eyes off that border.

We can’t risk you getting a glimpse of Biden’s economy.

Tells the Senate and House GOP to Abandon any negotiation and policy talks with dems to fix the situation at the border (and threatens them if they do NOT comply and threatens them to NOT attempt to fix the sitation) and in doing so sinks a Bi-Partisan deal that was almost there.....and instead calls on the situation to be handled with a Military Force because it will be a benefit to him

Trump Calls for ‘All Willing States’ to Deploy National Guard Troops to Texas

Amid Texas’ spat with the federal government over razor wire along the U.S.-Mexico border, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is calling on “all willing States to deploy their [national] guards to Texas to prevent the entry of Illegals, and to remove them back across the Border.” Trump’s comments on Truth Social Thursday came a day after the Supreme Court ruled against Texas’ Republican governor and attorney general by allowing border patrol agents to remove the wire. Trump added that he would “work hand in hand” with Abbott, who has defended his controversial immigration policies by saying that “the only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border, because of course the Biden administration would charge us with murder.”

Over 20K Sign Christian Petition Urging Boycott of Pro-Trump Evangelist Franklin Graham US/Mexico Border speaking events from Texas to California

ore than 20,000 Christians have signed onto a petition calling for the boycott of pro-Trump evangelist Franklin Graham's tour for the U.S.-Mexico border that is set to begin next month.

Faithful America, an organization of Christians supporting social justice causes while opposing "Christian nationalism," published a petition last November calling on boycotts of Graham's "God Loves You Frontera Tour," which is set to kick off on February 24 and travel to several cities along the southern border from Brownsville, Texas, to Chula Vista, California.

The organization is calling on venues hosting the tour to "stand up to Graham's anti-LGBTQ hate and political violence," writing that it is "critical that we show the public and the press that Graham's right-wing ideology doesn't represent all of Christianity." The petition has already received more than 20,000 signatures and has a current goal of 25,000 signatures.

"Despite the tour's deceptive name, Graham is a divisive figure who tries to hide a series of deeply hateful messages behind his father's Christian legacy. His message is not one of Christ-like love but of anti-democracy, anti-LGBTQ, partisan bigotry and harm," the petition reads.

Graham responded to the petition in a statement to Newsweek on Friday, writing that it is "disappointing to hear that this so-called Christian group is opposing my upcoming visit and accusing me of being hateful."

"I'm not coming to any of these cities to speak against anyone, I'm coming with a message of hope for everyone—and I invite everyone to come. I'll be sharing from the Bible, which tells of God's love for us. This is Good News for all people, and this is the message that I'm coming to share on the Frontera Tour," he wrote.

He added that he is inviting "everyone, including the LGBTQ community to come and hear for yourselves the Good News of God's love."

Karli Wallace Thompson, digital campaigner for Faithful America, said in a statement to Newsweek on Friday that the tour is "rooted in hypocrisy," slamming Graham for spreading a "divisive, partisan, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, conspiracy-theory-laden, MAGA Christian-nationalist message that starkly contradicts the inclusive teachings of Jesus Christ."

"Because of his track record, the 20,000-plus Christians who signed our petition are deeply concerned that Graham's border tour will stoke hatred and division at a time when tensions are already high. Venues must recognize the potential for Graham's presence to spread division and even potentially incite political violence among MAGA supporters," she wrote.

Wallace Thompson added that the petition is "proof that Graham's views don't represent all of Christianity."

Graham has been a major supporter of former President Donald Trump, who has enjoyed widespread support among evangelical Christians, a crucial element of the Republican Party's base. After Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to President Joe Biden, Graham wrote in a Facebook post that Trump would "go down in history as one of the great presidents."

"He gave us a president who protected our religious liberties; grateful for a president who defended the lives of the unborn, standing publicly against abortion and the bloody smear it has made on our nation; grateful for a president who nominated conservative judges to the Supreme Court and to our federal courts," he wrote.

Meanwhile, the petition pointed to a number of his previous remarks against the LGBTQ+ community, including a Facebook post in which he allegedly described them as "evil and rebellious," and praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has imposed some of the world's most stringent anti-LGBTQ+ laws, for his stance on the matters.

"Obviously, he may be wrong about many things, but he has taken a stand to protect his nation's children from the damaging effects of any gay and lesbian agenda," Graham said in 2014 after Putin said Russia needs to "cleanse" itself of homosexuality, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

The tour comes as border cities have grappled with an influx of migrant arrivals in recent months. There were more than 2.4 million encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border during the 2023 fiscal year, up from roughly 1.7 million in 2021, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. Local leaders have raised concerns that new migrant arrivals have put strain on communities as they seek to provide resources and shelter to new asylum seekers.

Graham, in a press release marketing the tour, said he is traveling to the border "because it is one of the neediest areas of our country at this time, and people need to hear a message of hope."

"Everyone along the border is overwhelmed—the churches, the law enforcement agencies, the residents, those there trying to help, as well as the people coming into our country. There are a lot of hungry hearts and hurting people, so I'm coming to the border to tell everyone about God's Son, Jesus Christ, and how He can make a difference in our lives if we put our faith and our trust in Him," he said.

Speaker Johnson warns Senate against border deal, suggesting it will be 'dead on arrival' in House

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson took a strong stand Friday against a bipartisan Senate deal to pair border enforcement measures with Ukraine aid, sending a letter to colleagues that aligns him with hardline conservatives determined to sink the compromise on border and immigration policy.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said that the legislation would have been “dead on arrival in the House” if leaked reports about the legislation were true. While a core group of senators negotiating the deal have not yet released text of the bill, it has already come under fire from Republicans, including Donald Trump, the likely presidential nominee, who eviscerated the deal this week as a political “gift” to Democrats.

Johnson in the letter said, “Rather than accept accountability, President Biden is now trying to blame Congress for what HE himself intentionally created.”

The message added to the headwinds facing the border and Ukraine deal, closing a week in which Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell acknowledged to his colleagues that the legislation faced tough opposition from Trump that could force them to pursue Ukraine aid another way. He later clarified that he was still supportive of pairing border measures with Ukraine aid — an arrangement that Senate Republicans initially demanded to gain their votes for funding Ukraine's war.

The diminishing prospects for a deal leave congressional leaders with no clear path to approving a $110 billion White House request for emergency funding for Ukraine, Israel, immigration enforcement and other national security needs. President Joe Biden has made it a top priority to bolster Kyiv's defense against Russia, but his administration has run out of money to send ammunition and missiles. Ukraine supporters warn that the impasse in Congress is already being felt on battlefields and leaving Ukrainian soldiers outgunned.

Johnson was already deeply skeptical of any bipartisan compromise on border policy, which would be necessary to clear the Senate. On Friday, he again pointed to a sweeping set of immigration measures that the House passed last year as being the answer to the nation's border challenges. But that bill failed to gain a single Democratic vote then and has virtually no chance of picking up Democratic support now.

As they enter an election year, Republicans are seeking to drive home the fact that historic numbers of migrants have come to the U.S. during Biden's presidency. His administration has countered that global unrest is driving the migration and has sought to implement humane policies on border enforcement.

Leaning into the push on immigration, the speaker said in his letter that the House would hold a vote on impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “as soon as possible” after a committee advances articles of impeachment against him next week. Johnson also said he was standing with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has refused to give federal Border Patrol agents access to a riverfront park that is a popular corridor for migrants illegally entering the U.S.

But the speaker is also under potential pressure himself.

If the Senate were to pass an immigration and Ukraine package, he would face a decision about whether to bring the measure to the floor. And while the speaker is skeptical of continued funding for Ukraine, he has also expressed support for halting Russian President Vladimir Putin's advance in Europe.

At the same time, hardline House conservatives have become vocal opponents of any compromise on immigration policy. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a hard-right Republican of Georgia, has threatened to initiate an effort to oust Johnson if he put the Senate deal on the House floor.

“This bill represents Senate Republican leadership waging war on House Republican leadership,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican of Texas, at a news conference this week.

Still, other Republicans have lamented that conservatives are throwing away an opportunity to gain a victory on an issue they have talked about far more than Democrats. The proposal would enact tougher standards on migrants seeking asylum as well as deny asylum applications at the border if daily migrant encounters grew to be unmanageable for authorities.

But reports about the details of the bill among conservative advocacy groups and in conservative media have focused on the measures intended to aid migrants already in the country.

Opposition from the right has stymied efforts to reform immigration law in Congress for decades. Trump allies have argued that Congress does not need to act because presidents already have enough authority to implement tough border measures.

Johnson echoed that sentiment in his letter, arguing that Biden could start to fix the border problems “with the stroke of a pen.”

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican, said earlier this month that conservative reports on the bill had “ginned up a lot of the base” voters against the proposals, even as the policy represented meaningful changes to immigration enforcement.

“This is a national security issue,” Mullin said. “And if you’re waiting until another president gets in, you’re playing politics with it.”

The mental gymnastics Christians have to go through to be pro-Trump continually blows my mind. PARTICULARLY regarding the border. These are literally the cold, hungry, and poor that you are turning away.

GOP Oklahoma Gov On Possible ‘Force on Force’ Conflict in Texas: ‘A Powder Keg Worth of Tension’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has continued to have Texas National Guards put up razor wire at the border after the Supreme Court ruled federal officials could remove it

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, R, on Thursday warned that the possibility of the Biden administration federalizing the Texas National Guard at the border is a "powder keg worth of tension."
"We certainly stand with Texas on the right to defend themselves, but Biden’s gonna be in a tough situation, so in other words, he’s going to try to federalize these troops," Stitt said in an appearance on Newsmax.

Texas and the federal government have been in conflict at the border, with the Lone Star State passing a law recently making crossing the border a state crime and putting up razor wire at the border. In response to the latter, the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to rule on its ability to take down the wire. In a 5-4 ruling, the court sided with the Biden administration.

He has insisted that Texas has a constitutional right to protect the border and will continue to do so, though Supreme Court precedent suggests only the federal government has the authority on that policy front.

GOP senator: ‘Immoral’ to kill border deal to help Trump

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) argued it is “immoral” for Republicans to reject a border deal to help former President Trump.

“I didn’t come here to have the president as a boss or a candidate as a boss. I came here to pass good, solid policy,” Tillis said Thursday, first reported by NBC News. “It is immoral for me to think you looked the other way because you think this is the linchpin for President Trump to win.”

Members on both sides of the aisle are upset with Trump’s attempt to kill the border deal to deny President Biden a legislative win. His recent remarks calling for GOP members to oppose a border deal that isn’t H.R. 2 have complicated things for the Senate.

With two solid wins for Trump in Iowa and New Hampshire and a path toward becoming the Republican presidential nominee, Trump’s allies in the Senate are attempting to kill the border package. That could endanger future aid for Ukraine in its war against Russia, which has been tied to such a deal.

The White House and the Biden administration officials got involved in negotiations in mid-December. Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) argued that the Biden administration is “probably feeling the heat” from the public and wants to address the border issue as Biden ramps up his reelection efforts.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) called the effort to kill the bill “appalling.” Romney argued that there is an issue at the southern border and anyone running for president should be attempting to solve it now — instead of solving it later and taking credit for it down the road.

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) has reportedly floated the idea of separating the border and Ukraine sections of Biden’s request, but others say McConnell will stand behind pairing the border aid with other foreign aid.
