Big XII Tournament Thread

Missouri running away with the Big 12 title in the same fashion we used to do! Something needs to change!
Would you be saying that if we had Kerkvliet and Ferrari in the lineup? This was the year we were supposed to be loaded. It didn't happen because, well, it didn't happen. But that doesn't mean we need to change things. It means we need to load up again.

Ok, so here's the report of what it looks (looked) like before Session 3 started at noon.

125: Unseeded Witcraft won a good match, first round, got lucky with a medical forfeit of the (1) seed Cardinale in Round 2, lost to (4) Stevo Poulin in Sudden Victory in the Semifinals and faces (2) Jore Volk in the consoaltion Semis. Great first day for Witcraft.

133: (1) Fix pinned Garrett Ricks (Wyoming), Tech fall over (8) Jace Koelzer and Major Decision (11-3) over (5) Connor Brown (Missouri) and is headed to the finals against (3) Zach Redding (ISU).

141: (4) Carter Young beat (5) Clay Carlson from S. Dakota State 4-2, then medically forfeited in teh fisrt few seconds against (1) Andrew Alirez. His knee looked baaad. Will face Casey Swiderski (ISU) in consolation semis if he can go.

149: (5) Voinovich beat (4) Kellyn March (NDSU) 3-2. Then lost to (1) Brock Mauller from Missouri) 7-1 to drop to the consolation semis where he will face (6) Mitch Moore from OU.

157: (2) Gfeller beat Tyson Humhreys (Utah Valley) 8-2, (7) Jason Kraisser (ISU) 8-3 and (6) Jacob Wright (Wyoming) 5-2 in OT to make the finals against (1) Jared Franek (N. Dakota State).

165: (6) Wyatt got majored by (3) Michael Caliendo (NDSU) then lost 6-3 against Cole Moody from Wyoming. Really disappointing day for Sheets.

174: (2) Plott beat (7) Lance Runyon 6-2, and pinned (3) Sam Wolf (Air Force) to make the finals against (1) Peyton Mocco from Missouri.

184: (3) Travis Wittlake beat Keegan Moore (OU) 5-1 and Keegan tried to slap Wittlake like the puss he is. Wittlake lost 5-3 in semis to (2) Marcus Coleman from ISU. Will face (5) Deanthony Parker, Jr. from NDSU in consolation semis.

197: (4) Luke Surber got a 16-4 major agianst Noah Glaser (N. Iowa), and a 12-5 win over (5) Owen Pentz (NDSU). He then got smoked by (1) Tanner Sloan (SDSU). Fill face (6) Evan Bockman from Utah Valley in consolation Semis.

HWT: (8) Konner Doucet beat Chris Island from Cal Baptist 2-0 in first round, got stomped by (1) Wyatt Hendrickson 12-3, won a 3-0 decision over Xavier Doolan from N. Colorado, then pinned (5) Michael Wolfgram from W. Virginia. He will face (3) Zach Elam in Consolation Semis.

All in all an OK day. Had some bright spots (Doucet, Witcraft). Really sucks about Carter's injury. Sheets stunk. Hope he can rehab it. We are in 3d place and will take a ton of work or big losses to move up or down from there.

Session 3: Consolation bracket

165: (6) Wyatt Sheets got a Major Decision against Baylor Fernandes from N. Colorado ad will wrestle for 9th place. At least he got a win in what might be the last match of his career. (Edit; Guess he has one more to get 9th).

Gives up another TD 2-4, escapes 3-4 then gets his own TD near end of 2 to go up 5-4 and rides him out. Parker has 1:28 in RT, so that could play a factor. Seems like we hear that very often. We *should* be loaded or we *could be back next year* and it hasn't happened for a very long time.

165 gets 8 AQs so Sheets has an outside shot at an at large bid

Witcraft gets 2 in Sudden Victory to take 3rd! Great match from him. Almost gave it up at the end of the 3rd but battled tough to run out the clock. Always nice to beat a Gooner for placement

Session 3 (Continued)

125: Reece Witcraft v. (7) Joey Prata (OU): Prata beat Reece 7-2 a couple of weeks ago in the dual. Not a ton of action in 1st period. Couple of small scrambles that don't amount to anything. 0-0. Witcraft down and out QUICK. 1-0. Little scramble at end of 2, but nothing there either. Prata down to start 3. Out after a bit. RT not a factor. 1-1. Prata behind Witcraft, but cant get a td! WOW! So 9 for sure in to the NCAA's with automatic qualifiers. Sheets has to win one more and hope for an at large bid it looks like.

Finals:

133: (1) Daton Fix (28-0) v. (3) Zach Redding (15-8) (ISU): Fix is 2-0 against Redding, both this year. 8-3 on Jan 28th and 5-2 on Jan 1.

157: (2) Kaden Gfeller (24-5) v. (1) Jared Franek (23-1) (N. Dakota State): Never faced each other.

174: (2) Dustin Plott (22-4) v. (1) Peyton Mocco (23-3) (Missouri): Plott is 2-1 against Mocco. This season Moco won 4-3 on Feb 5 and Plott won 12-7 on Jan 1. Plott was banged up but has looked pretty good. Should be a good match.

Witcraft (unseeded) finished 3d
Fix No. 1
Young No. 4 finishes 6th (Injured)
Voinovich No. 5 finishes 6th
Gfeller No. 2
Sheets No. 6 finishes 9th
Plott No. 2
Wittlake No. 3 finishes 3d
Surber No. 4 finishes 3d
Doucet No. 8 finishes 5th

So far 3 beat their seed, 3 underwrestled, 1 matched. Second place headed into the finals 122 to third palce ISU 121. We have 3 in finals (1 favored) to ISU having 5 (1 favored). Their 1 favored is David Carr but he is wrestling Kegan O'Toole, so I'd call that toss up if anything.

Witcraft with a double leg takedown in sudden victory. He has actually shown some moments of looking like a college wrestler in this tournament. Very proud of the way he wrestled this weekend.

Never heard of Kerkvliet
Committed to us. Would have come if Ferrari hadn't flamed out. Ended up at Penn State instead. If we had Kerkvliet and Ferrari this year Mizzou doesn't have a chance of catching us. That puts 5 Pokes in the Finals instead of 3. Maybe 6 with everyone shifted down a weight class because of Ferrari.
