Who Should OSU Hire as Next Basketball Head Coach?

I can't believe no one in D1 has hired this guy.

Fairmont State was a full-court pressing team whose opponents were averaging 17.7 turnovers per game. Its athleticism seemed overwhelming. McCollum didn’t sleep for two nights trying to figure out a plan of attack. Eventually, he widened his lens. Fairmont coach Jerrod Calhoun (now the head coach at Youngstown State), was part of the Bob Huggins tree. So McCollum studied Huggins’ Press Virginia squad, looking for a press breaker that worked against the Mountaineers. He remembered then-Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood had worked for Huggins as well. And on Feb. 4, 2017, the Cowboys scored 82 points in 63 possessions at West Virginia, the highest efficiency all season against the defense that caused more turnovers than any other in D-1 that year. McCollum copied OSU’s press breakers and taught them to his team the day of the game. Northwest Missouri had only 12 turnovers and won 71-61.
Great article and good find, thanks! I am very intrigued. FYI, it s a paywall, but if anyone wants to read it, hit F9 when the link loads up and it should take you to reader mode.

Whether he has or hasn’t, don’t think it’s good form to be cheering a coach being fired as that typically means things are really bad. I do believe it’s time for a change, and if that’s the case, then we’ll go along with it and Weiberg has a chance to earn his Stripes. If not, then things absolutely have to be different. Meaning his staff has got to turn over first and foremost. Go the route Gotlieb was going to and go get the 3-4 best assistants in the game. And listen to them.

Feel bad for him. I think he is a good dude who got put in an impossible situation. Got the job way too soon because Holder wanted to try to keep some of the Underwood magic and immediately got put under NCAA investigation for something that happened before he was even in charge. I think he will be successful eventually. I think he will be a successful D1 head coach somewhere, someday. Just not here. Sucks for HCMB. Sucks for OSU. He really seemed to understand this place and what makes it special.

I think this is worth another post:

Big question. Is this going to be an "effective April 1st" thing?

My guess is that it isn't even a factor. It was probably a negotiated settlement anyway. So it factored in, but it didn't impact the final number as much as the letter of his contract did.

I very much disagree with this assessment. He had 7 years and despite everything has had VERY solid recruiting. The BS violations should not have had a significant impact beyond a year or two. He had everything he needed to succeed.

I think the truth is that he is not head coach material. He will make an EXCELLENT assistant coach dedicated to recruiting. The best programs out there should be fighting over him, but I just can't see him succeeding as a head coach.

I think you are correct. It’s just a matter of what the negotiated amount turns out to be. This lets other coaches know we are looking.

There are plenty of assistants among the major teams ready to make the jump. A high level assistant or lower level HC is the most likely outcome, after taking your shot at the big names of course.
I've been saying this for a while. Get a really good assistant from a blue blood program that really understands winning at the highest level. Use this to get a really good initial deal on his contract and make back some of that cash you just lost.
