I believe this was done to make up for the gas tax EV owners don’t have to pay. The gas tax goes to pay to the FHWA. Personally we should get rid of the gas tax and likely this one and have a tire tax. Wheels = road damage. Possibly even an annual odometer inspection and place a tax on mileage.
I'm fine with the EV credits going away. But, adding a $250 federal tax just for owning an EV is absurd over-taxation.
I only drive 3000 a year since I bike commute. If I had a 30mpg gas car, that would be around $37 in state and fed gas tax.
Instead, for my EV, I am charged $110 by the state and the house just passed this $250 fee. I'll be charged nearly 10 times the taxation of others. This taxation should be mileage based just like the gas tax and just like business vehicle deductions.
That is what I am saying, it is 10 times higher, not a "make -up." If my 4-door Tesla was a 4-door Camry, I would pay about $37 in gas tax for the amount of driving that I do. With this tax, I am paying $360 dollars.
Businesses deduct by the mile and just report miles. An EV might cause a little more damage as they weigh more. GVW X mileage for your tax rate. But, don't tax some cars by the mile and put an arbitrary number on others that is way higher than the average miles driven.

I agree 100%. We’ve created multiple free riders instead and now perversely punishing a previous free rider. There’s absolutely a better way to handle this and no one gives a damn to solve it in an equitable manner.

You ignored it the last time I replied to you with this info and I'm sure you will again. Every study has shown that immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than US born citizens. And illegal immigrants commit crimes at the lowest rate of all. So if we're going based purely off of statistics, the more immigrants we let in the lower our crime rates will be. It's simple math, which is why it's great because math doesn't care about skin color or where you're from. Arguing with that math, believing things contrary to that math, now that's another thing. And yes, I'm aware conservative outlets have been lying to you for a decade blaming every problem in this country on immigrants in spite of what the math says.
