US continues to go backward...

Not sure how this fits with “US continues to go backward”. The letter appears to be an extremely reasoned message.

You think that telling parents that already skipped a safe and effective vaccine that it is OK to send their kid to a school if they want to when the school has an outbreak of a disease that has an R0 of 12-18, a 90% infectivity rate if exposed, and a 25% hospitalization rate?

At least only 0.2% will die and only 0.1% will get lifelong complications from encephalitis.

And, of those hosptalized in the US, this happens:
The most frequent complications observed with measles were: dehydration (weighted frequency [%]: 161 [15.8%]), hyponatremia (145 [14.3%]), pneumonia (127 [12.5%]), acute renal failure (106 [10.4%]), diarrhea (97 [9.5%]), thrombocytopenia (97 [9.5%]), conjunctivitis (87 [8.5%]), septicemia (84 [8.3%]), fever (73 [7.2%]), sepsis/SIRS (64 [6.3%]), bronchitis (49 [4.8%]), pleurisy (38 [3.8%]), otitis media (37 [3.7%]), and pancytopenia (35 [3.4%]) (Fig 2). Even among inpatients who were diagnosed as measles without mention of complications, 15.7% had dehydration, 14.5% had hyponatremia, 13.4% had pneumonia, 10.5% had diarrhea, 9.9% had thrombocytopenia, 9.3% had acute renal failure, 8.1% had fever, 8.1% had conjunctivitis, 7.6% had septicemia, and 5.2% had sepsis.

This is a public health failure. This is the US going backward because this stupidity would not have happened any time recently. I just hope they get dumb lucky due to the 90% of kids that are immunized and the outbreak stops. This was from 1934 before widespread vaccination. Similar, "Hey, it is bad but maybe not too bad" type advice.

isn't it the most contagious disease we know of or one of the top 5 most contagious diseases ? IIRC the R0 on that is way high compared to other viruses

The letter was very informative and transparent. Exactly what we need from our government.

The letter informed parents of educational options and about in-home solutions if they choose to keep their child home…exactly what we should want from our government.

The letter also informed that the health department is actively monitoring the situation and will utilize data to update guidance that may be adjusted based on that information..data-driven decisions, exactly what we should want from our government.

The letter also informed parents they should monitor children and make decisions best for their family. A government allowing parents to make decisions about their child…exactly what we should want from our government.

We've had a vaccine for this for DECADES. Why are we dealing with this at all? Vaccinations have been a requirement for public school since at least I was a kid (early 80s), its nothing new.

This the US going backwards because parents are stupid and refuse to accept they are stupid. Stop listening to fake doctors online and get your kids vaccinated, that's what he should be saying.

We have gone so far in some places to "parents know best" that we forget a lot of parents don't want to listen to trained professionals. No they don't always know about everything...no one does. Their 30 minutes on Google going down a rabbit hole doesn't beat years of school and decades of research.

We Literally have Deep Red State Governments that will PAY farmers to vaccinate their Cattle to prevent disease spread and potential collapse of the states entire Cattle industry in the event of an outbreak

who then REFUSE to apply that same logic and PROVEN prevention measure for their Children. We literally treat cattle as more important.

Pro Life my azz.

Human life post birth is not important to the pro life movement.

In the span of a week we have states saying individual choice doesn’t matter when it comes to embryos where the decision only impacts 1 or 2 people. And another state w a deadly infectious disease saying “F other people. Do what you think is best for your family and be damned the consequences your decision has on other children and their families.”

And people think this mindset towards science is somehow not moving us backwards.

Don't forget to add in health care for trans... that effects exactly one person per decision made by that person with no other chance of even "potential people" to be impacted.

It’s like they want to live in the Wild West instead of a civilized society.

What’s next? Was thinking of having another child (too old actually) but we changed our minds are we now guilty of mental murder? This crap is why we are a secular society. Old men telling women what they can and cannot do with their own bodies is total bull. Who the hell do these people think they are? Gods? Better build more jails for miscarriage murderers, Use day after pill, you’re a murderer. VOTE these judge’s supporters out of office, and recall or impeach these radical legislating from the bench, monotheistic political judges. Birth control on the chopping block too. Not only do these people promote one religion, they demand everyone else to believe what and how they believe. These so called “Christians “ seem to have forgotten that even the Almighty only wants our love if it’s free will . NOT this shove it down everyone’s throats. IMO we need differentiation between those who know His voice and those that have calloused their hearts. Let’s call them what they are “Christian” Taliban, scribes and Pharisees.

Government being very informative and transparent and letting parents make the best decisions for thier families:

Dear Parents,

We have found out that marijuana brownines are been being sold in an elementary school. Marijuana for children of this age can cause signficant harm. While not a direct poison, it can make them engage in dangerous activities. There are associations with early marijuana use and mental health disorders.

We could irradicate the seller of this substance. However, this would require law enforcement and the children seeing police in the school. Given that that there is a high rate of parents that will not let their children buy marijuana at school, we are going to defer to parents on elementary school marijuana purchasing. We will monitor the situation closely and might change this recommendation.

so let me get this straight. The Party that is parroting Putin and Russian talking Points and who has a leader who is promoting Russia over traditional American Allies now wants to make it a required subject in Middle School, High School and College education settings to study and learn Communism

Florida House committee approves bill to create Communism Education Task Force

Florida students could be required to learn about communism and other socio-political and economic systems after a bill advanced in a House committee on Wednesday.

A revised early learning bill also passed the House Education & Employment Committee.

HB 1349 is co-sponsored by state Rep. Robert "Chuck" Brannan, R-Macclenny and state Rep. James Buchanan, R-North Port and would require instruction on the history of communism in classrooms which would commence in the 2026-2027 school year. The bill also creates the Communism Education Task Force.

While introducing the bill to the House Education & Employment Committee, bill sponsor Brannan said that the bill would build on work done at the Adam Smith Center, located at Florida International University.

"[The bill] establishes the Institute for Freedom in the America's at the Freedom Tower as a part of Miami-Dade College," Brannan said. "The Adam Smith Center and the Institute for Freedom will work together to promote democracy and economic freedom, with an emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean."

Brannan added this bill would not only ensure that students are educated on the horrors of the history of communism but that Florida would become a "beacon of freedom" for the state's neighbors, its citizens and all those in the Americas.

Brannan noted that the bill does not state that the subject would not be taught to children in kindergarten and is aimed towards older students in middle school, high school and college.

HB 929 is sponsored by Rep. Dana Trabulsy, R-Fort Pierce. It would revise the state's School Readiness Program, including defining the term "economically disadvantaged" to 55% state median income for the purpose of the program.

Trabulsy said during the committee meeting that the bill was designed to maximize participation in the program, as well as codify funding and support adequate reimbursement rates for school readiness providers.

Trabulsy stated the change would capture single-parent households making $15 an hour in anticipation of the constitutionally mandated minimum wage required by Sept. 30, 2026.

The bill would require the state to adopt a state-wide parent co-payment sliding fee scale to ensure the uniformity of parent co-payments based on family incomes.

HB1353 is sponsored by state Rep. John Snyder, R-Palm City. It would revise the state's pre-kindergarten programs to provide better support for children, providers and early learning coalitions, by adding tools needed to capture students who may be struggling with their early learning.

About 30% of this country is in complete "FU, got mine" mode. Most of the time their stupidity affects the rest of the civilized world in real and profound ways. They still don't care.
Yep. We have loads of data that strongly indicate the negative affects of taking young children out of in-school education. Yet too many ignore data and want to make emotional knee-jerk decisions without first monitoring and investigating the situation.
Manatee Elementary has over 97% vaccination rate and they are being very vigilant by deep cleaning classrooms, buses, and changing air filters.

Show me ANY data on the harm of taking the few kids who's parents refused the safe vaccine out for the three week incubation period for a severe and highly contagious disease. You are extrapolating long term data from widespread online education for COVID to something completely diffferent. Rookie mistake.

I love people with no training calling everything but their cluelessness "knee-jerk." This is a huge policy change with no evidence base done for politically expediency. Calling that out is not “knee jerk.”

We have eliminated (technical definition as is no longer endemic) this disease in the US since 2000. We have decades of data showing that source control, vaccination (the most critical resource and NOT mentioned in the letter) and exclusion of those at risk has allowed this to happen. What data is there on changing air filters and cleaning classrooms? You call this "very vigillant" but someone with a rudimentarly understanding of the transmission mode of measles virus would calll "windowdressing for idiots."
