Trump 47

We haven't had a robust functioning free press in years and it is a huge part of the problems we have. Same information is distributed very differently by "news" organizations that are now manly opinion shows.....coupled with the entrance barrier to distribute information being completely destroyed by the internet. You have segments of the population tuning in to have their biases confirmed. What has always been one of our greatest assets of our society is essentially dead. This crap could kill it altogether.

Yeeeep. I can see both sides on this one. Now I'm sure Trump is going about it the absolutely wrong way. But the press isn't the press anymore. We don't get news. Something should be done.

Unfortunately I think it's just our monkey brains that feed on negativity, in groups and out groups, divisiveness, etc. Is it the media's fault for filling a demand? It might be us.

I don't think there has ever been an unbiased press. Its just human nature to report things through your personal lens.

There is no constitutional requirement that the free press be unbiased or objective.

If there is something that should be done, whatever it is, it should be done by someone other than the government.

Agree. And again, unfortunately the best fix would be an educated populace that could acknowledge their biases and approach a different opinion with reserve, patience and an open mind....

I almost couldn't type that with a straight face.

The populace can't be expected to keep up with the world's issues but they should be able to expect the truth from media outlets......particularly networks that are given FCC licenses to broadcast as part of government services such has emergency notifications systems etc. And we do not have that anymore. We don't have anything close to that.

People don't want that. Most would rather get news that confirms their personal biases.
We can talk about fair reporting in the media but its hard to fault a business for giving their customers what they want.

Can we at least ask for factual accuracies and no blatant lies?

We absolutely could. It would take a lot of us to ask for that though. If enough people turned off CNN and Fox News, they'd go away or at least change.

Now I'm not saying it's only the demand-side's fault. They know what they're doing too. The folks in DC and the media absolutely use our monkey brains against us to keep us divided because it keeps them more powerful.

As with everything. Little of column A, little of column B.

I agree.

At some point though….and I’ve pretty much reached that point….there are certain redline, non-negotiable, values that go beyond opinion and when others gleefully support the violation of and stepping on and over them I feel no desire or responsibility to approach that with reserve, patience, respect and open mind.

Popper’s paradox in action, I guess.
