OT: General CFB Thread

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Monday at the league’s spring meetings that a proposed 16-team playoff that would guarantee the SEC and Big Ten four spots each with other conferences receiving fewer automatic bids “could cost us positions.”

“So if you actually go back and do the research, that kind of format could cost us positions,” Sankey said. “Depending on the number of teams. I don’t see the critics really digging in to understand that reality. I don’t see the critics actually analyzing like I’ve just described, how schedules are evaluated. So the critics can run to the microphone and share their opinions. We’re trying to find a format to determine — whatever number it is — the best teams in college football. And I think where we are right now is we have used a political process inside a room to come to decisions about football. We should be using football information to come to football decisions.”

The nerve to talk about using a political process? My god, the arrogance.

Over the last 75 years when fall camps open, how many D1 teams could honestly say they were playing for a championship? Maybe 5-10 a yr? And how many were the same 5 or ten out of maybe the same 12-15 schools year in year out?

Besides the money under the table (now over the table), this fact was the biggest recruiting advantage these 12-15 schools had.

All the BiG10 and SEC are doing is perpetuating that same advantage. Just looks a little different.

AQs and byes are just protection for the same schools.

True, but those teams were also spread across 4 & 5 conferences, & the tv $$$ was too.

If Alabama can't compete others like Michigan and Oregon have billionaire donors that can keep the school in stupid money. I just don't see how Texas or the TAggies are going to lap everyone with money. If Phil Knight gave .1% every year to Oregon it would be around $30 mil. None of this is sustainable and may ruin the product before someone with common sense gets involved.
Why would "uncle Phil" cut to $30 mil a year? And why is it not sustainable?

Because not everyone has an uncle Phil. It’s not sustainable because a few dominant teams will ruin the product. See the NFL and MLB for examples.

Uncle Phil cuts the check every year for the same reason papa Boone gave $165 million- they want their team to win.
