My thoughts exactly.

When you’ve got Castiglione and other AD’s publicly stating concerns about schools following the rules, it makes you wonder if they’ll ever have actual accountability.🥴
Ad to it the state of Tennessee (and others) actually passing laws preemptively to say “f**k you guys we don’t have to follow your governing body rules.”

Getting rid of the auto-byes for the conference champions. Can’t say we didn’t see this one coming. Byes will likely go to SEC, B1G & ND if they have a pulse.

I’ll be curious to see if the conference champions ranked outside the top 8 get the concession of a first round home game now.

The format change would’ve had Arizona State and Boise playing first round games last year, with UT and Penn State getting byes.

They’re doing it right in front of our faces.😒

SEC meetings this week are going to be a huge influence on the future of college athletics, period.

This is a long read, but there’s a lot packed in it.

Notable items:

SEC presidents quietly voted in January to give Stanley the authority to leave the NCAA.

Resolution signed by power 4 last year grants the B1G & SEC all of the decision making power, it simply calls for them to consult with the ACC & Big 12.

Former UT president who oversaw their move to the SEC is now at SMU & concerned about some schools ability to continue to compete.’

The toothpaste is out of the tube, genie’s out of the bottle…Somebody turn out the lights, college athletics is done.

I don’t need lectures from others about ‘good of the game,'” Sankey told reporters on Monday. “I don’t lecture others about ‘good of the game.’ And, coordinating press releases about ‘good of the game,’ again, you can issue a press statement, but I’m actually looking for ideas to move us forward.”

Sure, one can be a bit sympathetic to Sankey. Many stakeholders are invested in these decisions: schools, players, television partners, and fans are all impacted.

freestar

But to suggest that he’s “looking for ideas” on the best ways to move forward is a bit rich. In today’s college football landscape, the SEC and Big Ten propose the ideas, while everyone else fights for compromises aligned with their best interests. To imply that the SEC or Big Ten would take any big-picture ideas from another conference seriously is laughable. Everyone knows who is calling the shots.

I think Sankey finally admitted the quiet part out loud when he said there’s a reason pro leagues are at 30-32. That where this is headed IMO and the quicker it get a there the better. The rest of us restructure into “college athletics” w a reasonable spend on athletes and a “commission” that has authority and holds schools accountable.

I don’t care if we don’t play aTm or Ohio State or USC in football. Let’s get 70 or so schools and play meaningful games. You will never get the Ole Miss/Tx/aTm/Tenn/Mich to even the playing field and deal in good faith.
