SHERIFF RESIGNS AFTER PLEA: The Cleveland County Sheriff in Norman, Oklahoma, resigned today immediately after pleading no contest to embezzlement of campaign funds. This is his letter of resignation.

The Oklahoma Attorney General says Sheriff Chris Amason pleaded no contest to the felony count of embezzlement, stemming from a recent indictment brought by the Multi-County Grand Jury. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Amason has agreed to resign from office effective immediately, pay $10,000 in restitution, accept a five-year deferred sentence and surrender his CLEET card.

Amason was charged with moving between $2,500 and $15,000 from his campaign account to his personal account and others on multiple occasions, violating the ethical rules that govern use of campaign funds. The transfers occurred between May 2020 and July 2025.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond said the resolution ensures accountability for misconduct in public office.

“Public officials are entrusted with taxpayer dollars and must be held to the highest standard,” Drummond said. “Sheriff Amason took an oath to enforce the law. He has neglected his duty and is no longer fit to serve the residents of Cleveland County.”

OK GOP CHAIR ENDORSES JACKSON LAHMEYER FOR CONGRESS…

The race to replace Kevin Hern has taken a Christian Nationalist turn.

Last week, OKGOP Chair Charity Linch officially wrote a letter to Donald Trump endorsing “Pastors for Trump” firebrand Jackson Lahmeyer — the guy who got Bible-thumped by James Lankford in 2022 — in the crowded CD-1 Republican primary.

While Lahmeyer and Linch celebrated the endorsement on social media, it didn’t exactly go over well with the old GOP guard.

Four former OKGOP chairs – including Pam Pollard, A.J. Ferate, Nathan Dahm, and Gary Jones – fired off a public letter asking Linch to rescind the endorsement or resign, noting it breaks a long-standing tradition of party leaders staying neutral in primaries.

Linch basically ignored them, arguing the rules don’t prohibit endorsements and she can use her voice however she wants.

Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see if the endorsement even matters. 99% of Tulsa Republicans couldn’t pick Linch out of a lineup, but if Lahmeyer uses it in postcards, ads, and church sermons, it could help.

The real question is whether it – and the backlash – catches Trump’s attention. Probably not (that usually costs money), but if it does, it could reshape the race and push CD-1 even further into Christian Nationalist territory.

I'm not opposed to changing it to an appointed position but not without also changing the board to elected positions. Same setup as school districts. Let us elect the board and then the governor and/or board can appoint the super. Having an elected super with 6 yes men is clearly a terrible setup.

I don't blame efforts for trying to do that from Walters winning his election after complaining about schoolteachers setting out litterboxes for students pretending to be cats. But not sure a Republican governor would make any better of a selection.
