OC and DC Possibilities - New DC Todd Grantham, OC Doug Meacham

When you look at the rankings. The highest rated guys have been the ones that have played for us, and usually some of the main contributors on the team.

This is a really interesting hire for several reasons
1) I've never seen a school have two OL coaches, now we have Bassett and Mitchell. How will they coach them up? Is one focused on upper classmen, and the other is focused on 1st & 2nd year players? Is one an x's and O's coach, and the other is a recruiter?
2) These are both Joe Wickline guys. That's incredibly encouraging
3) The resume's for both are good indicators of up and comers. Bassett has been a 6 year OL coach, with the most recent being Co-OC at Utah State. Mitchell was and NFL guy for a few years, followed by a few years as an OL coach at TCU/Indiana State. He served as OC at the juco he attended for two years, and has been the head coach there since 2018 (9-2 record in the most recent season). Any chance we are looking for future OC's/ HC's out of these two?
4) Youth is a good thing to have on a coaching staff, especially in recruiting.
5) The Vance Vice smoke screen indicates that this is not business as usual for our program. Whether initiated by the BoR or Gundy, this is the most comprehensive overhaul we've had since wickline/meacham left. Hopefully, it leads to something awesome on the recruiting trail and the field.
One will be focused more so on technique and small detail tasks, while the other is focused more so on big picture stuff (schemes, recruiting, etc.) This is how I understood it, I could definitely be wrong though!

We have a lot of assistant coaches coming in that have held coordinator positions recently. Wonder if they will be providing input in game plans more than normal or it will be purely on the coordinators.

I've been happy with most assistant coaching hires, unsure but hopeful at the coordinator level right now.

Wish we actually announced when a position coach left, makes it hard to know who was replacement and who was in addition.

There was a post on twitter about Bassett and Mitchell, but it was making a joke from The Office about Michael Scott and Jim Halpert being co-managers. Michael focused on the big picture stuff, and Jim the day to day and it was the plot of an entire episode :). I think that confused some people.

Bassett is the OL coach and Mitchell is his assistant.

Assistant to the Oline coach

My God dude give it a break. You’d be more pissed if we won the big 12 next season and made the CFP than if we sucked and Gundy got fired. We get it, you’re tired of him. He agreed to the new terms, is putting together a nice staff and appears to be attacking the portal. Buy in and support the team or move on. It’s getting old honestly.
Scroll the F on Karen.

We disagree, get over it, while you prattle on about how Gundy ‘deserves the chance to fix this’, other people have legitimate concerns.

I’ve defended the guy for years, so save your routine for someone else. I’ll be happy as hell to eat a platter of crow if he turns things around, after he ran them into the ground. History suggests it’s unlikely.

What would be your barometer next year to indicate he’s the right guy moving forward? 6, 7, 8 wins? Guessing 6 & a bowl-such a big deal!💩 is your benchmark.

I’ll answer specifically: 2-1 in noncon is at least a 5-4 record in conference. Anything less than 7 wins is not good enough.

2 big 12 championship appearances in last 4 seasons. I love the Karen comment bud, it’s cute. Quit bitching about the situation and move on. It’s over. He’s the HC.

My expectations are to compete for Big 12 titles buddy. Which Gundy has consistently done. Next season specifically? Need to win 8 games minimum. That’s my expectation. Any other questions you want answered?
No, took you two posts to come up with an answer.

Frankly, I’m surprised you put the bar at 8.

Might be possible now that the HC has chosen to embrace the changes in his sport that occurred three years ago! Eh, but that’s just me bitchin’.😜

I don't completely disagree with you but what was your preferred alternative? Fire him and pay the buyout or fight a legal battle over whether we had cause or not.
Gundy's contract had the University over a barrel. This is a better outcome than I expected. Got rid of the worst aspects of the contract and cleaned house in assistants.

If we get more of the same next season, then we let him go with a more affordable buy out and avoid a potential legal battle playing out in the opinion sports media which would not help recruiting or hiring good coaches.

We as a fanbase need to be proactive and let the AD know to stop with these insane buyouts. We have been bitten in the ass by them more times than they've benefitted us.

What's with the Clint Bowen hire for unnamed role? Please tell me analyst?
From the Lawrence Jounal World:

Bowen’s official job with the team has yet to be decided, but Bowen said it’ll likely be on the offensive side of the ball. Meacham was the KU offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2018, while Bowen was the defensive coordinator and the associate head coach for the Jayhawks.

Along with returning to a Power Four conference that Bowen knows well, the job provides an opportunity to be close to his son Banks Bowen, who will join the University of Tulsa football program in the fall.

“That was a bit of a fortunate sidebar; that wasn’t really planned or anything,” Bowen said. “It definitely makes it nice to be 45 minutes from where he is. Oklahoma State plays Tulsa in week three of the season, so I’ll get a good look at him on that day.”

Before coaching at LHS, Bowen was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at North Texas in 2020. From 1996 through 2019, Bowen spent most of his time on the Kansas coaching staff. The new job doesn’t just mean returning to college football, but also to the conference in which Bowen played and coached for most of his career. Seeing familiar faces at each venue will be a welcome bonus to the job, along with coaching at what he says is a very tough environment for visitors.

Yeah. I'd seen that too, which was what led to my question. I get that he's spent most of his career in the Big12, but I just don't get what other than coaching across from Meacham would explain the hire.

He's a guy whose coaching career has mostly been coaching Defense on a perrennially horrible team abd he's been out of college coaching for 4 years... am I missing something here? I could see him.being a good fit for an analyst role, but otherwise I don't know.
