The situation in the Strait of Hormuz and across the Middle East is rapidly escalating, with new attacks, missile interceptions, and conflicting claims between the U.S. and Iran. Here's the latest:— The United Arab Emirates confirmed that Iran struck one of its ADNOC oil tankers with two drones after it attempted to pass through the Strait without Iranian authorization.
— The UAE called the attack a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2816 and an act of piracy.
This marks the first major strike since the April 8 ceasefire.
— Numerous explosions have been reported in the Dubai area, as UAE air defenses engage incoming missiles.
— Residents are also receiving missile alerts on their phones, the first since the ceasefire.
— UAE’s Fujairah says a fire has erupted in a petroleum industrial site following drone attack from Iran.
— South Korea also confirmed one of its vessels was hit in the engine room while transiting the Strait. All 24 crew members are safe.
— United States Central Command (CENTCOM) says two U.S.-flagged vessels successfully exited the Strait under the escort mission “Project Freedom.”
— But Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) disputes that, claiming: No commercial ships or tankers have passed in recent hours — calling U.S. statements “baseless lies.”
— CENTCOM is denying reports that Iranian missiles struck a US Navy ship. It has not commented on whether or not Iran fired at a US ship.
— Despite the U.S. operation, traffic remains extremely limited.
— Most vessels are avoiding the U.S.-backed corridor and instead using Iran-controlled routing systems.
— Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei stated the Strait will only reopen if countries accept Iran’s dominance or return to conflict and face “another humiliating defeat.”
— U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is begging China to step in and help reopen the Strait.
