Conference Realignment - What's next?

That is why I stipulate Oregon and Washington won’t be “long term” additions to the big12. Things will change and the networks will agree. So long as the conference maintains interest, I will bet it will happen.
If they join the Big 12 they are going to be locked in till the end of the current contract which is 2031. No way the media partners would agree to anything but that.

According to a FOX executive in the fall, Oregon and UW are worth half of the B1G’s upcoming per team payout. They will never be in the B1G. They are slightly higher than the Big12 per team payout and add value and stability as well as the coveted PST night game.

I wouldn't fault adding UConn (at this point Yormark has earned some leeway IMO) but after we give better candidates a chance to jump on. UConn ain't going anywhere, they'll still be there after the bigger/prettier fish have passed.

*Edit-I'll add; a UConn & Gonzaga basketball only add would be OK at any time
Basketball only would be great and it would give them a chance to build up football for a possible add sometime in the future.

Adding Oregon and Washington would be wonderful for both parties assuming they understand each other.
  • The Big 12 understands that Oregon and Washington's ultimate goal is to join the Big Ten and that they will be gone the second that door is opened.
  • Oregon and Washington understand that they are equal parts of the whole. Same money share, same Grant of Rights rules, and the same vote.
  • Oregon and Washington get assured financial security going forward and can maintain (or grow) what they have to be attractive to Big Ten.
  • The Big 12 gets two very respectable football programs to add to their perceived national value.
If when the Grant of Rights ends in 2031 they have an invite and choose to leave no hard feelings either way. It wouldn't come as a surprise and would be prepared for. It would have been a mutually beneficial situation and they can both wish each other well.

Regardless of what happens with other schools potentially joining, we have made it well known we’re here to stay and fight to be one of the top conferences in the country regarding all sports. Brett Yormark is making things happen fellas! Oklahoma State is in great hands.

We can debate schools and direction all day (I think UConn has more value than people think), but THIS cannot be debated.

When Texas and OU left, I resigned myself to “well I’ll always watch and support my school, but my expectations on its future need to change a bit”.

Yormark has been a decisive, outside-the-box thinker who has not just saved the conference, but elevated it.

Cannot wait to see what else he has up his sleeve.

I wouldn’t go as far to say he has elevated the conference. Nothing alone or in the aggregate that has been added comes close to goon and Texass football brands. I do appreciate his proactive approach though.

If I’m not mistaken (I could be), our media rights deal is higher than it previously was.

Our footprint is growing nationally and internationally.

We are becoming a conference destination, rather than one that is riped to be poached.

Our relationship with grassroots leagues and professional leagues is growing (Rucker Park and an NFL partnered Big 12 Pro Day).

How is any of this not elevating the conference?

so your comparing the 2012 deal vs 2022? Would like to have seen a new deal including goons and whorns. No ifs or buts, it would have been better than what we have now.

You’re kidding yourself if you think big12 is destination conference. B1G and SEC are “destinations” now. Big12 is just stepping stone to avoid irrelevance.

I do think big12 commish is doing good work, but when you lose your top 2 brands, it is really difficult to argue the conference is elevated.

Goons and whorns were gone BEFORE Yormark. Why stop there....why don't we compare what a media package would look like with A&M, Mizzou, Nebraska & Colorado

OU and Texas leaving could not be prevented. Even Yormark couldn't have stopped it if he had the job at that time. The fact that we were looking at G5 relegation before Yormark, and are now the most stable and richest conference after BIG/SEC and are now the poachers, we are in about the best possible scenario. We obviously lost some prestige without OU and Texas, but again, their exit could not have been avoided.

I agree to a point. This volley will break up the PAC and stabilize the Big 12 for a few years, especially if we get 1-3 more PAC teams.

The whole thing will break again in 31-32 when the ACC and Big 12 deals expire if not earlier.

The Pac 12 is on Life Support,

The ACC is about to fall apart too...

And people are whinging about the Big 12. Whatever man. Enjoy your miserable existence.
The ACC is a long way from falling apart. If you read the article you will see that it is just about those teams pooling their legal resources to try and go after the GOR in court and get out. However there is no guarantee of that working and it could take a long time and lots of money to get it done. Even then if they do get that, they will then be turning around and trying to get new deals with the same media partners they just beat in court.

They’ll never have a B1G invite. They don’t bring any value to the B1G

This is all over twitter today:

Meanwhile the Colorado move certainly means the Big 12 will add 1 more team and Bret McMurphy is saying he thinks we'll have 16 teams by 2024.
