Conference Realignment - What's next?

Per Scheer on 365 sports right now: "The goal is to roll it out (AU and ASU to the Big 12) tomorrow." Tomorrow is the day.

multiple reports the Board of Regents have approved it and they are now voting tonight to finalize the deal and notify the Pac 12 and Big XII would vote tomorrow to accept them and make the announcement

BoR for AU and ASU is the same body of people

Not trying to change the subject exactly but.....who is our biggest Rival now? Baylor? Texas Tech?

We don't really have a rival right now. I hope it is Texas Tech or K State though.

That being said, the reason why Tech is not a rival is because we have kicked their doors in for 15 years straight.

It's gotta be Tech. KSU-ISU is already a good rivalry (Farmageddon). Baylor's got TCU (Holy War).

OSU and Tech both consider OU and UT to be primary rivals, but with those games out the door, it seems like a good time to consider each other rivals. They already claim to have invented finger guns, people riding horses, the word "Power," and the forward pass, so it makes for some fun s-talking. It'll help if Tech actually learns to play football again. It'll never cease to amaze me how mediocre they were with a generational QB in Mahomes.

They will be much better this year, I am actually glad we don't have to make the trip out there to play them. And I have a son there so I am usually down for any reason to go see him.

The PAC is going to either fold or fade soon enough. Adding a school(s) that don’t bring real value to our conference just to try and hasten their demise is dumb, a waste of resources, and will actually hurt the B12. We’re in the catbird seat, why take just anyone to only add numbers?

Congratulations!!

My first big red X of the new board. (guess technically the X is white though)

How is it that it would cost UU $10+M to rebrand but only $50K for AZ/ASU? Doesn't make sense.
Maybe they don’t want to be in the same conference as BYU? When I hear something ridiculous like that it sounds like road blocks being thrown up.

Being OSU fans we can certainly appreciate a healthy hatred of an instate rival, but cmon utes pick your battles. If someone came to us saying choose...you either play 0u every year and remain relevant, or your sole televised game each season is a 9pm Thursday night kickoff against Boise State but only if at least one of you is ranked...ya swallow your pride and deal with the squats.

I imagine it would be infinitely worse watching your hated rival succeed to any extent while you wallow in obscurity then it would be to play them annually and at least have the chance to beat them and prove you're better.

I haven't seen this posted, but the numbers that the Pac 12 are looking at are...$20MM per team and everything streamed w/ Apple TV. There are incentives for each school in the subscriptions reach certain levels, and if UOWA leave the deal is off....

Those are harsh #'s...If you are AZ, UO, WA...how can you turn down the Big 12 and miss out about $20MM a yr in revenue? Seems like a no brainer to me but what do I know.

I'm behind so maybe I missed it but it looks like UO and WA are willing to take pro rata deals with the thought that in 5 years or so they get a full share and when the next big deal happens they get their payday. Not an ideal situation but better than what they have now and probably better long term than what they would get from the Big 12.

I guess I don't understand the benefit financially or competitively for the other schools. This feels just more being bitter at the bluebloods. Consolidation was inevitable with the money involved. I think pretty much everyone paying attention doesn't blame OU for doubling their income. We all know OSU would take an invite if it were to arrive for the same reason. I guess I'm just not that bitter about any of this, I think we ended up in a damn good spot, making good enough money, and should be competitive most years in most sports, including an easier path to the 12 team playoff. What I wish had happened was a full convention amongst the P5 members to arrange for higher pay for everyone while maintaining conferences, or divisions, that make geographic sense. If USC and UCLA want to play more games in Big 10 country, it could happen easily in that world. But here we are, every few years, something changes incrementally. I've said it a million times so sorry if I'm the broken record, but the BIG and SEC will have unequal revenue sharing by 2030. There's just no way their gonna be letting Purdue and South Carolina make $75 bazillion dollars a year, same as Ohio State and Texas.

I don't buy it. There are only so many blue bloods. Do you think every other school in the SEC and B1G would take a pay cut because it would benefit Bama, Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, Michigan, and USC? You could go down the list but unless slightly over half the conference wants to screw the minority over they won't have the votes to make it happen. Why would Rutgers or Vandy agree to take less money voluntarily? They aren't getting pushed aside because the top teams need them. They can't play a blue blood vs blue blood schedule every week. Bama goes 6-6 a couple of years and I don't care how tough their schedule is-fans riot and casual viewers turn off ABC and onto ESPN2 for the fun Memphis Tulane game. They need weaker teams to rack up wins and viewers care less about a blueblood that is average than they do a hot flavor of the week. Hell, they need those teams to be competitive sometimes. I'm never watching Bama or Ohio State beat up on someone in prime time. But if I see an alert where Indiana is up late on Ohio State I'm tuning in. Making it that much harder to happen lessens my viewing experience and networks don't like that.
