2024 Portal Season

I am excited about the fact that we will be a much more experienced team next year. I don't know how to quantify how valuable that is but Lutz clearly is seeking to bring in experienced players, which makes sense in the current climate. If you are only going to have a guy for one or two seasons, better to have him for his final one or two seasons than his first one or two seasons. The following is the total minutes of each player that departed from OSU who had eligibility remaining and could have been on next year's roster:

Dailey-715 career Minutes at OSU, 2.4 Win Shares
Williams-1347, 2.6
Small-772, 2.1 (East Carolina), 1022, 3.0 (OSU)
McBride-154, 0.2
Garrison-727, 2.2

Now for the incoming guys that Lutz is bringing in out of the portal:

Dean-1844, 3.0 (FIU)
Jennings-644, 2.2 (TTU)
Avery-643, 2.5 (NMSU), 549, 2.1 (UCF)
Davis-3719, 8.2 (Ark)
Newman-1600, 4.3 (Pur), 875, 2.6 (WKU)
Ousmane-1789, 8.5 (UNT), 725, 1.6 (Xav)
Brantley-2825, 6.0 (LS)
Suemnick-134, 0.2 (RMU), 563, 1.1 (WVU)

In hindsight, it baffles me that Boynton chose to bring in a class of 5 freshman (plus another redshirt freshman in transfer Isaiah Miranda) when his seat was already so warm. Half of his roster had no minutes of college basketball when he could have just as easily brought in 3+ more experienced transfers in place of a few of those freshmen and probably saved his job for another year.

Just for reference, the experience OSU is bringing back is as follows:

Thompson-341, 0.3 (KU), 2354, 3.9 (OSU)
Keller-488, 1.0
Dow-306, 0.2

In fact, yes, acc'd to Pistols Firing, it is the 6'10" 245 guy from Xavier (1 year after 3 at N. Tex).
We're getting a lot of guys with a lot of experience.
That's 9 schollys, so 3 left, acc'd to PF (tho I thought we get 13, or 4 left).
We should have 13 this year.

We took 1 scholarship reduction in 2022-2023 and 2 reductions in 2023-2024. That would be a total of 3 and meet the NCAA penalties.

I don't think you can compare incoming stats versus outgoing stats. Outgoing is limited to the total stats of one team, where incoming stats can have a higher ceiling plus players from lower-level teams should be generating a higher percentage of their team stats. 3 of the 7 are from mid-majors and the P4 players are looking for a better scenario that what they left.

I like the Brantley and Ousmane pick-ups. Then there are about 5 that can go either way: Davis, Jennings, Dean, Newman, Avery.

Real question. What are we going to do to get a big. We have a handful of guys listed as PF at about 6-8. We have one guy at 6-9. We weren't able to secure Cisse, and Lutz has said he wants to add two bigs to be able to compete. Do we have an answer or targets?

Jaxton Bobik, a 6-foot-8 small forward, last played organized basketball in 2021 before for his mission. As a senior at Queen Creek High School in the Phoenix suburbs, he averaged 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.

I wonder if Lutz will honor this situation. FWIW, the article was published on January 16th.

Lutz said it will be a marathon not a sprint. He has a plan. It may be putting feelers out then talking to boosters and getting some of their conver$ations with top guys. He is not a rookie coach he is a veteran who has been around a loooong time. He has put together pieces who are going to scrap and claw and win with toughness. He recruited Edey and other NBA guys he knows what he is doing. I’m guilty too of seeing somewhat average on paper but these transfers guys are older and experienced. That’s more important than HS #s. If you put your trust in SLutz you can’t go wrong 😜

I absolutely agree he's the right guy for the job. My comment was more targeted towards the fact that we're very deep into the signing cycle, and it's highly unlikely that we actually sign someone this season that can legitimately defend the paint and score inside. As a result, we as a fanbase should adjust our expectations so as not to kill any excitement around the staff. I believe a ceiling of us finishing middle of the pack and a floor of us finishing outside of the bottom 3 is an appropriate expectation for our current roster and state of the program. Would I love for more, absolutely! Is it fair to expect more this season, absolutely not!

I think a lot of games can be won with discipline alone. Bryce shooting fadeaways out of rhythm with 3secs left on the clock is not winning basketball. Stupid foul after foul when you have no big man depth is not winning basketball. Not hustling back, same story. Clean up that stuff, sprinkle in some experienced talent and I agree 5/6th in conference is a solid goal. Make the tourney and see what happens

Just an anecdotal comparison, I remember K State didn’t fill out their roster last year kinda the same we way we are, it took them awhile. They added big men like N’Guessan really late last year and it worked out fine. Is it concerning we still haven’t filled out the roster? Maybe a bit. But recruiting is weird these days. I’d rather Lutz take his time and add the right guy, then rather add just another guy.
