That all depends, is Gary Ward the batting coach or is Josh Holiday the batting coach if we take the swing?
Fair enough but the being top dog with 0u and texass gone conversation is NOT the same in basketball as it is football. The top dogs in basketball in what will be the new conference are ku and zona by a long shot. We won't supplant them.
It is what it is, I'll be hopeful if it is Alford. I'll look forward to a more consistent and solid team. If Alford does what he usually does, he probably lands a contract extension and retires here. It would be anticlimactic, but hopefully GIA & the Big 12 makes his teams a little more competitive than they were in Iowa and we see a few more NCAA tournament appearances (he had 3 in 8 yrs for the Hawkeyes).
I agree but I am not going to be as concerned about what he did 20 years ago at Iowa.
We should be aiming to be in the top 5 in good years and top 9 in down years. I realize the world of NIL might make seasons more prone to seesaw effects, but in generally that is my goal. Be a consistent top 5 Big 12 basketball team or be really damn competitive in that arena.
He hasn't done much at Nevada. Musselman and Fox accomplished a lot more in Reno than Alford has. It has been fairly unimpressive. Not bad, but nothing that suggests he needs a promotion.

Coaches learn, change, and develop over the years, just like players. Maybe it's better to consider who they are today instead of review who they were 20 years ago?

Steve Alford took over a Nevada program that had been to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments, and he missed the NCAA Tournament in his first 3 years. He hasn't really had more successful at his current job than he had at Iowa. There are coaches like Leonard Hamilton & Greg McDermott that improved significantly with time. Alford doesn't seem to fit into this category.
If we're going to go after an older coach that's arguably past their prime, we might as well hire Thad Matta from Butler. He's taken two teams to the Elite 8, and he has a better overall resume:
This is absolutely delusional if you're talking about on the national stage and not the conference stage. Kansas isn't top 10 nationally in down years.
If you're talking conference, I say the good years need to be top 2 or 3.
Alford also took over a team that graduated 5 of it's top six contributors. And for referencd, Thad Matta is basically the same age as Eddie was when he came to OSU.

Thad Matta is an interesting candidate. He retired at Ohio State due to health issues as the all-time winningest coach there. He could be successful here if he's healthy and still has the fire to coach. I would be more excited about him than Alford.
