Well, it was highly advertised that he was closely advising MB this season, his worst season, so that would slam the door on any long shot chance. We took reach candidate last time. I think Wieberg realizes with NIL/recruiting as is, we need a proven X’s and O’s head coach that is going to coach guys up and maximize potential.

I like that guy at Div II Northwest Missouri State. I know, Div II. But read the article at post #223. Also, accd to the Springfield MO paper, he's the leading candidate for the Missouri State job in Springfield. Barry Hinson used to coach there when it was Southwest Missouri, I believe. Anyway, the guy's name is Ben McCollum and read the article. I think you'll be impressed. Quote there on him from Shaka Smart praising his smarts. Esp effective on OFFENSE due to a variety of screening action. Intriguing. Has been natl coach of year in Div II twice, won four of last six national championships in Div II. Married, 3 kids, about 42 years old I think, and a lot of years as a head coach, even if at a smaller place. But he's familiar with our neck of the woods; his conf includes UCO, Rogers St & Northeastern A&M, so he's familiar with our state. If we can't get a great Div I coach, I'd sure give this guy a long look.
If Chad doesn’t at least phone Gregg Marshall, he can pack his stuff up too for all I care.
Buzz probably wouldn’t be worth what it would cost us. He makes $4.2 million at TAM. They are in the First Four Out group right now.
TCU can keep Dixon. Before this season, his conference winning percentage was lower than Boyntons. He is 60-81 in the Big 12. He makes $3.8 million at TCU. That is a lot of money for Boynton-esqe results.
Jans would be a good hire. His career winning percentage is over 70 percent. He makes $3.2 million at Mississippi State. He was an assistant at WSU under Gregg Marshall.
I have read a couple of places that the Washington job is Sprinkles if he wants it. Drew might not want to coach in the same conference as his brother.
My West Virginia friend says Byington is very high on their list.

Gregg Marshall? Will Wade? Why not Lamont Evans? Is he out of jail yet? Way too many good candidates to go down that road. I like the Drake coach.
This is exactly why I think the next hire has to be an absolute proven home-run. Somebody like a Gregg Marshall, Jay Wright, etc (just examples). Get a guy in that has won and put players in the NBA so we can get recruits immediately. Plan for him to be here around 5ish years with an assistant under him that can potentially take the reigns after that.

The portal is a double edged sword. You can lose players quickly, but you can also pick them up quickly. Jerome Tang took over a K-State program coming off of three straight losing seasons. He built his roster quickly through the portal and made the Elite 8 in his first year.
Next year could be rough as we go through transition, but it might not take several years to rebuild if we get the right coach.
And if you hire a head coach from a lower division you don't know if they can handle the higher level of talent and competition at a higher division. Unless you can lure away a high level head coach with really high winning percentage, you're dealing with some level of risk. Even high level head coaches that make lateral or slightly upward moves don't always work out at different schools. I see the risk of a lower division head coach and higher level assistant as fairly equal in concept. A lot will do with an assistant coaches perception, there are several who are expected to be successful head coaches at some point.
I'm fine with whoever we lose and whoever we get via the portal. I really don't expect a new head coach to come in and magically teach these guys how to make a damn jump shot. I hope to retain some of the guys who showed potential but if the entire roster turns over I won't lose much sleep, I'll trust the new coach to get things rolling, and as you said, the portal can be just as effective as a positive to turn a struggling program around quickly.
