After Boynton, I don’t think I want an assistant. I want someone who has shown that they can coach the game and do all the other stuff, too. Mike couldn’t coach but he could do all the other stuff.

It's relieving to hear we're moving on, but this is where I'm at now too. Please don't come to us with an announcement of hiring an internal assistant yet again.
That's not why he struggled, and there are just as many lateral head coaching moves that don't work out. I just hate that whoever it is, the fans are going to grumble without giving them a chance (unless it's Sean Miller or the like, which is unlikely). It just can't be a no name assistant on the team already that was on nobody else's radar. That was Boynton's problem, promoted way to soon. He'll get another HC shot in the future, he's young enough, and will get a really good assistant job or maybe even another HC job.
I guess to be clear, I'm talking about assistants at other major programs. I agree hiring an internal assistant again would not be a good path. I hope Scott Sutton finds a spot on the new staff, but not at anyone's insistence, let the new coach pick his staff.

I agree with everything you said. However, the team didn’t improve throughout the year and the showing in the tournament proved that he has lost the team. Maybe they knew he was done when they left for KC.
Depends on how much slack he cut OSU on the buyout.

Any rumors on what the negotiated buyout was? I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually a LOT lower than the contract's number. That sounds strange as "why would he do that?", but he has a lot of reasons to want to move on too. No one wants to stay where they are not wanted, and the longer he does stay the more it inhibits his ability to get good positions elsewhere.
Regardless we will find out the number before too long as it is public information with public schools.

RA said on his radio show today that there was a group of donors that approached Chad Weiberg about a month ago and pledged the money for the buyout. If that's true, the exact number won't matter because it's already been paid.
I'm glad they acted early because there are going to be a lot of good coaching candidates taken off the board before April 1st.
The level of NIL funding available to the basketball program will have a huge impact on who will be interested in our job.
Personally, I don't think Sean Miller leaves Xavier to go to a football school unless it is one with a lot of NIL money (like Ohio State). He likes coaching at a basketball school in a basketball conference (Big East). He is making as much at Xavier as he would at Oklahoma State.
Darian DeVries looks like a good possibility. He has six straight 20+ win seasons at Drake. His son is really good and would probably come with him.
One guy that I find interesting is Amir Abdur-Rahim at South Florida. Previous coach went 79-107 overall and 32-72 in conference. This guy in his first year at USF goes 23-6 and 16-2. Beat Memphis on the road and Florida Atlantic. USF had a 15-game winning streak in conference play and had a top 25 ranking for the first time in school history.
But, I am fully prepared to be very disappointed in the next hire.

I like the Drake coach, would be a good hire.
Head coach experience does show how someone can run a program, but ultimately it does not matter whether we hire an assistant or head coach. Need someone that can recruit, have a sound coaching philosophy, and understands adjustments and game planning for opponent.
Boynton could recruit, but his game plans and styles against opponents did not advantage his teams.
Btw, there are A LOT of HS coaches that are just as good or even superior running a program and game planning than current college coaches. Not saying he should be top choice, but Brian Montonati should merit discussion.

No. A HS HC should never be in the discussion for Big 12 HC job. Assistant coach? Sure but never a head coach.
