Border problem.

Yeah, my bad. Forgot where I was for a minute and inadvertently walked in on your little liberal circle jerk over here. Carry on.

"Bought" it at end of Mexican American War in 1848.

Mexico cedes to the U.S. present-day California, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, and parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming, for $15 million.
What is that in todays dollars?

Center looks pretty liberal when you are sitting out there on the far right fringe. *shrug*
And the crazy thing is today’s US political climate is not linear it’s more like an upside down horseshoe 🧲 where the further extreme or fringe you are the closer to the other side you become.

Trump isn’t even conservative politically, spiritually, financially or personally.

He is in favor of a 16 week abortion ban when some stats say that 94% of all abortions happen prior to week 16. He is not conservative on criminal justice. He deported fewer immigrants on average per year than Obama. He would and did give out stimulus money if he thought it would be to his advantage damn the long term consequences.

Financially he can’t run a clean business and personally he lives a flagrant/liberal lifestyle where he has 3 baby mamas, cheated on all 3 and has to pay hush money for an alleged affair w a pornstar that led to felony indictments. On top of all that he had to post a $91MM bond bc he was found liable for sexual assault and couldn’t keep his mouth shut about the alleged victim

There are few people more liberal than Donald Trump and WAB and the Magastanin citizens lap it up and then call us in the center “liberal”

Grifters gonna grift.

Marks are gonna mark.

The problem is, they simply do not care.

In the past seems people were partisan, but also were not so partisan that they held their "side" accountable.

The idea that a party would kill a bill that their side won from a policy standpoint because more than a year before an election they want the problem to continue to harm the country so that they have campaign material should get a complete no from the American people.

But, now people are all about their side over the country.

In the past, I used to state that politics has gotten like college sports. If a player from "my" team got a DUI and stayed on the team it was a kind coach giving a second chance to a young man. If the rival did it, they were keeping criminals for football wins.

But, that analogy is wrong now and they have gone far past that. In the state of Oklahoma, we don't get along with the other team. But, can you imagine if there was a natural disaster deciding if you would help based on if it would help out the University of Oklahoma teams? That is the level our politicians are functioning at now.
So like holding off on a stimulus check during a global pandemic due an election? That’s closer to a natural disaster right?

Both parties have done this.

You are right they don’t care but none of them care. You have republicans governors busing humans like cattle and dem pres taking action after saying there wasn’t even a problem…calling for things he called racist during the last campaign. Dems praising a bill none of them would support 3 years ago from a Dem pres and reps making actions they have screamed for dead on arrival because they are afraid of a candidate facing dozens of felony charges.

It’s why it hasn’t been fixed for decades.

College sports is a good analogy. You can have a player rape a drunk 12 year old and people on the old board will say “he probably didn’t know she was 12 girls look older now” or have one punch a woman in the face on camera and it’s fine. We are at the point it doesn’t matter for about 20% on both sides. That 20% is what re-elects and it’s why we are circling the bowl.

None of them care. Not a single one.

As I read through the various posts on this thread it makes me think that we pack so much into the words liberal and conservative.
The fringes of both parties at the current time seem to violate historical liberal and conservative principles. As an exercise of one’s thoughts it appeals to me to rethink what it means to “support the constitution.”
“Support the Constitution” currently appears to be code word for my side needs to win.
“My side” can often lose a policy argument and the “other side” still not be in violation of the constitution.

Showing your bias donny. Other than the example because of the thread subject, I didn’t designate one party at all. Yet you made an assumption then wrote a bunch of whataboutism which is just your way of defending one side. Being that you took a side, “they” is you. Constant defense of a valid concern with “BUT, BUT they ALL do it!!!!” is simply tacit support for the status quo. And that is what most of your posts are.

And you missed my point about it no longer being like college football. Partisan politics has gone beyond defending bad actions that occurred. Your example being “badder” than mine doesn’t change the point. They are now accepting future bad actions for the country if it helps the party. Football fans may defend a rape that occurred. Few would accept a plan of allowing more rapes to continue to help their team. Maybe Baylor, but not in fans in general.

No you call it bias due to your own. Any thing said against Biden is a pro Trump/GOP statement with you. You point the finger at a single party constantly when both are playing politics. You don’t see it because your hatred for Trump. And that is understandable he is a massive POS. You act like the Dems are good faith actors all of sudden when all they are doing now is because of poll numbers. I say it’s 100% politics that the reps are squashing this bill and you say I’m defending them. I’m not. I’m calling a spade a spade. The President used the word illegal at the SOTU this week….that term was called racist by that person last election cycle. So is Biden now racist all of a sudden or is his approval rating in the can? Both sides are playing politics pure and simple. This was such a non issue he never even visited the border then through pure coincidence I’m sure he and Trump showed up the same day. I’m sure neither knew the other was coming seeing as how they both have secret service and those guys are great at secrets.
The Dems have blocked any border measures for years….now the Reps that wanted them are blocking them I guess I missed the event that would 180 two political parties. It seems odd that two entire parties would change course in a few months if it was anything other than politics. It’s why nothing gets done. You said this kind of partisanship is new. It’s not. Maybe your bias forgot about holding the stimulus ransom last election…. Partisanship is what’s killing us and it’s from both sides.

I’m calling BS on both.

I’m interested in seeing this asserted quote from Biden in the last election circle.

Could you kindly provide it?

TIA.

The dems were wrong on a lot of the border issues. While you claim I am against anything said about Biden I'm the one that posted the article from the NYT stating that the Biden was wrong about a lot on the border (and it even said it was a reaction to Trump). https://rideemcowboys.com/threads/border-problem.676/post-60837

The Republicans got as close to exactly what they want in this bill as ever happens in our system on anything with controversy. Yet, they killed it. Of course, both sides play politics. Not all politicians do at this level. Look at Langford. Look at Liz Cheney.

I'm trying to imagine a year to go in Trump's term if the republicans would have said, "Yea, OK, we will do a universal health plan bill" and the dems were about to get Medicare for All that the dems would kill it to hurt Trump.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they are all just as bad as Trump and his little henchmen that killed a good bill. I just can't see it.

You are right about one thing. I do hate Trump. I think he is the biggest long-term risk to the stability of this nation. So, that is what I post about. And I think equating him to the typical political antics of our regular poli-critters is a bad take.

Get rid of him and the MAGATs that follow him, and I will be back to posting whining about the dems stupid tax plans, the republicans rejection of even reasonable environmental policy, and of course the deficit, which if Trump didn't exist would be my largest concern about the stability of the country.

‘We Utterly Failed’: Chip Roy Says Republicans ‘Totally Dropped the Ball’ When They Controlled Congress Under Trump

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) delivered a blistering speech on Tuesday, accusing Republicans of having “utterly failed to secure the border” when they controlled Congress under former President Donald Trump.

Reacting to the news that Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) will retire from the House on March 22, making the Republican majority even narrower, Roy said, “We had another member of Congress resign today. So now I’ll be told, ‘Chip, we only have a one-seat majority or two-seat majority.’ I don’t even know what it is anymore.”

He continued:

Let me ask the question, does it matter? In 2018, we had the House, we had the Senate, we had the White House, and we had a bigger majority than we have today, and we utterly failed to secure the border. Totally dropped the ball. Didn’t do it. Why? I remember why! They would say, “Chip, we don’t have 60 votes in the Senate.” Let me be very clear to the American people back home, there is always an excuse for why those who campaign to come to this town fail to deliver. Always.
Buck, who said last week he will retire without specifying a date, announced on Tuesday came as a surprise to many in the Republican Party, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who told reporters he was not informed about Buck’s plans prior to the news.

Asked by CNN’s Dana Bash why he was retiring, Buck said, “Well, everywhere I go in Colorado, Dana, I hear that people are not happy with Trump and are not happy with Biden.”

He continued, “I’m going to leave and I’m going to find the right organization to join, and I’m going to start working on that issue. We have to have better candidates up and down the ballot, not just president, but Senate, House, local offices. We’ve got to find better ways to elect candidates and bring America together.”

Texas judge questions AG’s ‘true motivation’ as he rules against bid to shutter Catholic non-profit helping migrants

A judge in Texas has ruled in Favour of a non-profit organization sheltering migrants on the US-Mexico border after the state’s Attorney General ordered it to hand over a large number of records.

AG Ken Paxton said in February that his office believed Annunciation House was helping people to illegally enter the United States, “alien harbouring” and people smuggling.

The non-profit, which operates migrant shelters in and around El Paso, asked for more time to hand over the files requested by Mr Paxton’s office.

The Attorney General then announced his office was suing Annunciation House, seeking to revoke its licence to operate.

However, on Thursday El Paso County District Judge Francisco X. Dominguez abruptly put a stop to Mr Paxton’s efforts.

“The Attorney General’s efforts to run roughshod over Annunciation House, without regard to due process or fair play, call into question the true motivation for the Attorney General’s attempt to prevent Annunciation House from providing the humanitarian and social services that it provides,” the judge said in his ruling.

“There is a real and credible concern that the attempt to prevent Annunciation House from conducting business in Texas was predetermined.”

Neither Ken Paxton’s office nor Annunciation House returned requests for further comment from The Independent before publication. Judge Dominguez has ordered the AG’s office to go through the courts if it wishes to continue its investigation.

When the lawsuit was announced on 20 February, Mr Paxton said his office had “complete and unlimited authority” to examine business records and that failure to comply with a request could lead to termination of its right to operate within Texas.

The AG then immediately brought up the issues at the border with Mexico.

“The chaos at the southern border has created an environment where NGOs, funded with taxpayer money from the Biden Administration, facilitate astonishing horrors including human smuggling,” Attorney General Paxton said.

“While the federal government perpetuates the lawlessness destroying this country, my office works day in and day out to hold these organisations responsible for worsening illegal immigration.”

However, the organisation argues that it is just trying to help the around 300 undocumented migrants in its care to get processed by authorities, so they can live the American dream and lead a safer life.

In an article in January, Annunciation House’s director Ruben Garcia said that asylum seekers were afraid of US authorities, though.

“They’re saying, ‘We want to present ourselves. We want to get processed. We want to proceed with our asylum.’ So from that was born the idea, let’s have a workshop on asylum,” Mr Garcia told El Paso Matters.

“It’s about enabling asylum seekers to actually access the asylum process, which is their right to do, which has been denied.”

The Annunciation House case is being seen as part of a wider effort by both Ken Paxton and Texas Governor Greg Abbott to target organisations they see as supporting widespread, illegal immigration into the US.

The Texas Tribune reports that the state has spent over $10 billion since March 2021 on Operation Lone Star - meant to deter people from crossing over from Mexico.

Texas governor predicted donations would pay for busing migrants out of state. He’s collected less than 1% of that cost

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott boasted shortly after he began soliciting private donations for his controversial migrant busing program that there would likely “be no cost to the state” given the outpouring of support from concerned citizens across the country.

But after nearly two years of fundraising to offset the program’s costs, Abbott’s operation has collected less than half of 1% of the roughly $150 million spent on busing migrants to sanctuary cities, according to a review of state records. And CNN found that the largest donation – $900,000 – never made it into the state’s coffers, either because it was a mistake or a prank.

Records show that at most, around $550,000 has been raised to date.

The data provided by the state reflected donations submitted online or by mail through check, credit card or bank transfer, not funds actually received by the state — meaning the data could contain donations that were rejected by banks and credit companies during processing. Reporters tried to reach the woman behind the supposed $900,000 donation, but they could not locate the person with the name provided, and the phone number submitted to state officials was disconnected.

Abbott’s office published a running tally online to show how willing people were to support his program. After the $900,000 contribution was submitted online in September, the website showed that donations had reached more than $1.3 million, but in December, the tally was readjusted – dropping back down to around $460,000.

CNN also spoke with another donor listed in the data who confirmed he did not make the $2,000 donation listed under his name. Yet another donor showed reporters a letter he said he received from the state after complaining that his $1,000 donation to the state border wall fund had been instead allocated to the busing efforts.

The governor’s office did not respond to CNN’s questions about the mystery donation, other discrepancies and whether any of the other donations listed in the state data did not come through.

Since the busing program started, Texas taxpayers have largely footed the bill. The governor’s office says it has transported more than 100,000 migrants from Texas to sanctuary cities around the nation, including New York City, Chicago, Washington, DC and Denver. Given the payments made to private contractors so far as detailed in public records, this means it has cost about $1,500 to move each migrant out of the state.

Immigration advocates have slammed this operation as a dangerous and inhumane publicity stunt, and sanctuary city mayors have also fought back against Abbott’s program, instituting regulations about when and where the buses can drop off migrants, as the cities have struggled to meet the needs of the sudden influx of asylum seekers. Last year, a 3-year-old migrant girl died while on a bus to Chicago as part of Abbott’s busing program, and a 10-year-old girl was reportedly hospitalized the prior year due to dehydration and a high fever while on a bus to Philadelphia.

Securing the border has been a hot button issue as the presidential election nears. While many Republicans have lambasted President Joe Biden for not doing enough to stop migrants from crossing the border, some immigration advocates and attorneys say he has actually made it too difficult for migrants to go through the legal process to seek asylum in the country.

Aside from the unfulfilled $900,000 contribution, the largest donation in the records came just last month from Wyoming megadonor Timothy Mellon, an heir to the Mellon family fortune. Mellon donated $50,000 to the busing program, far less than the tens of millions of dollars that the Texas Tribune reported he contributed to the state’s border wall fund. He has also donated millions to Super PACs supporting presidential candidates Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. this year alone, according to Federal Election Commission filings. He did not respond to a request for comment.

CNN reached some of the donors on the list who confirmed they had made the donations and said they strongly believed in the governor’s mission.

Texas engineer Ronald Roche, who has donated $500 to the fund, said Abbott’s busing initiative has become necessary because the federal government has failed to address “this migrant problem.” He first learned about the efforts watching the news and said that while he was compelled to donate, he is also supportive of state taxpayer funds being used.

“States have a right to protect themselves,” he said. “If the federal government’s not doing it up to the level, I think any state… ought to use their own money. And that’s money well spent.”

While the bulk of the donations in which a state was listed came from those living in Texas, residents in other states – such as Mellon – also offered support.

“This isn’t just a Texas problem,” said Peter D’Amato, a property manager in South Carolina, who donated $100. “Texas drew the short straw being on the border, but it’s a national issue and they need some relief, and these folks need to find refuge in the sanctuary cities that invite them.”

Samay Rajan Verma, a 19-year-old college sophomore at Elmhurst University, a Christian college in Illinois, told CNN he supported the program because he wants people to “see the value of legal immigration,” saying his Punjabi parents entered the country legally and had to re-start their schooling. “They did a lot just to be here and to be successful in the United States. … I feel like the American people aren’t really realizing that this is really a slap on the face of all the legal immigrants that came here.” Verma donated $25 to Abbott’s efforts.

A $2,000 donation, meanwhile, was listed as coming from a progressive Washington, DC climate activist named Hendrik Voss.

When reached by CNN on the phone number provided to the state, Voss said he was shocked – then angry – to hear that he was listed in the donation data.

“I can say with 1,000% certainty that I’ve never given a cent to Gov. Abbott’s dehumanizing and racist publicity stunts,” he said in an interview. In reaction to the news, he said he had made an immediate donation to a local nonprofit to help support migrants who are being bused to DC.
