Kinzinger: Trump claiming to be war hero ‘just nuts’

Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) criticized President Trump for claiming to be a war hero in the wake of the Iran strikes, arguing it is offensive to those who have served in combat.

“Yeah. I mean, look, this is just nuts. This is nuts. And they‘re going to find — his people are going to find a way to justify this,” Kinzinger, a frequent Trump critic, told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Tuesday. “Listen, when they were putting out something honoring the Army‘s 250th anniversary, they put out a picture of Donald Trump in his military academy uniform, which has nothing to do with the military except they drill you.”

Kinzinger, who retired from Congress in 2021 and is now a senior contributor on CNN, was asked to weigh in on Trump’s recent remarks on “The Mark Levin Show.”

“He‘s a war hero because we work together. He‘s a war hero,” Trump told conservative radio host Mark Levin, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I guess I am too.”

“Nobody cares, but I am too. I mean, I sent those planes,” he added, just months after the U.S. bombed three nuclear facilities near Tehran in defense of Israel.

Kinzinger, who served in the Air Force and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, pressed back against the rhetoric but added that he hopes the president is able to facilitate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“You can like what he‘s done. That‘s fine. I hope he gets a resolution in Ukraine,” he said. “But to put himself on the same level of people that have actually gone out and served this country, not claimed bone spurs, is an offense to anybody who served.”

“And frankly, you just take somebody that served, calling themselves a war hero, even that would be inappropriate,” the former GOP lawmaker, who said recently that he feels closer to a Democrat nowadays, told CNN. “For a guy that never served to say it, it‘s nuts.”

Kinzinger added, “But somebody, they‘ll defend it, they‘ll find a way.”

The comments come as Trump is looking to facilitate a Russia-Ukraine peace deal after meeting with both leaders and seeking another ceasefire in the Middle East between Isreal and Hamas.

GOP Rep Heckled at Town Hall Starts Throwing Trump Under the Bus and Later blames Paid Agitators.

Trump-supporting Rep. Harriet Hageman of Wyoming once again found herself in the difficult position of having to defend the president’s most unpopular policies this week as she was confronted by disappointed constituents at a town hall event.

Hageman, Wyoming’s sole congressperson and a vocal Trump ally, hosted a town hall event on Monday in Casper, a city in central Wyoming.

During the event, one constituent approached the microphone and asked Hageman, “Who’s responsible for establishing tariffs in our country?”

Hageman began to reply with, “Right now, the president has taken that authority, but I’m not sure when we go back,” before she was drowned out by loud boos. The constitution grants congress, not the president, the power to impose tariffs, but it can delegate some of these powers to the president if certain conditions are met.

Determined, the questioner continued, asking Hageman why Trump took that authority. She continued to divert to the president: “You’re going to have to ask him,” she responds. “You guys gave it to him,” the questioner retorts, as the audience claps and cheers.

Hageman tries to argue, saying, “I dispute that,” adding that “tariffs have raised over $150 billion.”

“Who pays for them? We pay for them,” the questioner responds. As Hageman tried to defend Trump’s tariffs by citing the fact that inflation has not increased, her response was drowned out by loud jeers and noises of dissatisfaction.

A live stream of the event revealed other confrontations throughout the evening, including a constituent asking the congresswoman about Trump’s plan to abolish mail-in ballots.

“Our democracy is built on secure and accessible voting, where do you stand personally of those foundational tools? And if you support it, how do you defend the charge that it’s more than a policy choice but a push for authoritarian control that undermines elections?”

Hageman’s response is drowned out by cross talk and people shouting, “Lies!”

Another constituent asks her, “How can I tell that anything you say is true? How can I have any trust in you, my representative? You haven’t given us any trust, it’s weird.”

The appearance marks the third time this year that the 62-year-old has been confronted by angry constituents.

Last week, Hageman was booed at another town hall event after attempting to justify the Trump administration’s planned repeal of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Endangerment Finding. The 2009 Endangerment Finding declared greenhouse gases in the atmosphere a threat to public health and necessitated that action be taken to reduce emissions.

Claiming the finding was based on “false science” and that CO2 was “not a pollutant,” Hageman was booed and heckled.

“It was well attended with a spirited crowd and I welcome the opportunity to have meaningful discussion,” she wrote on Facebook after the event.

She published a similar statement following the Casper town hall, attaching a photo taken with students and writing, “I just wrapped up my town hall in Casper. I am appreciative of those who came out to have a meaningful discussion about what matters most to you.”

Hageman was also booed at an event in March where she expressed support for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, telling the crowd, “DOGE is not dismantling social security.“

In a Tuesday interview with local news outlet Wyoming News Now, Hageman blamed several of the confrontations on “professional agitators.”

“I could also tell that there were probably professional agitators in that room, I could see how they behaved... that was just people coming in trying to disrupt the town hall, not for the sake of a dialogue, but that was just what they were doing,” she claimed.

She added, “I don’t mind if people criticize me, that’s going to happen, that’s the nature of our form of government, and I can learn from people as well, so I don’t have a problem with criticism. I don’t even have a problem with town halls where people may disagree with me, and we had a couple of issues like that this morning, and that’s absolutely fine, I lay out my case, they lay out their case and we can kind of discuss.”

GOP senator says Obama could be charged — and Trump's immunity ruling doesn't count for Obama

President Donald Trump and his administration officials have repeatedly suggested, with no basis, that former President Barack Obama committed a crime in pursuing an investigation of Russian interference into the 2016 presidential election — but even Trump has acknowledged that Obama probably can't be charged with anything because of Trump's own Supreme Court case establishing presidents have a presumption of criminal immunity for "official acts" carried out in office.

However, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) isn't quite willing to concede that just yet, explaining on the right-wing Chris Salcedo Show his own legal theory of how Obama could be prosecuted anyway.

"I have an op-ed out, actually, today, for articulating the path to indictments here," said Schmitt, a former state attorney general. "That's what has to happen. There has to be justice served here. And, you know, Obama might be able to survive, ironically, because of the presidential immunity case that President Trump won a year ago, at least while he was in office. Now, I don't know if he took actions when he was out of office or not that further the conspiracy or not."

"Some of the statute of limitations might have expired, but a conspiracy that is ongoing takes you out of those limitations," he added. "So Clapper, Comey, Brennan in particular, I think this is the route forward and I think there should be indictments."

President Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence has previously laid out that she thinks Obama may have committed "treason" as part of the investigation that determined Russian operatives interfered in the 2016 election on behalf of Trump — a finding that has been extensively corroborated in documents, testimony, and Trump's own public actions, even as he has for years falsely tried to claim that Russian interference was a "hoax."

The actual theory of what crime was committed is unclear even on right-wing media; Gabbard has suggested Obama intervened directly to override the assessment of intelligence agencies about the extent of Russia's actions, but analysts have noted that's not actually what he did.

Crazy how stuff like that changes.

It shouldn't really be a partisan issue as there are multiple demographics that benefit. Like you said its easier for rural voters who don't want to drive 20 minutes to get to the voting booth. Its also popular in urban areas because you can avoid a 3 hr voting line. I was traveling for work on election day last year so it (or early voting, which I did) are essential for people who know they can't make it to the booth on election day.

Its frustrating when politicians want to make voting harder.
There's exactly 1 party trying to make voting harder. We should be making it way easier. Could start with making it a federal holiday

Aides left 'helpless' as they tried to stop 'incoherent' Trump rant to Putin: biographer

Donald Trump displayed a breathtaking lack of understanding about the Cold War during his recent summit with Vladimir Putin — and left his own advisors “basically helpless” as he waved away their attempts to interject.

That’s according to the president’s biographer, who spoke to the Daily Beast on Wednesday.

On the podcast "Inside Trump's Head," Michael Wolff said that Trump's version of Cold War history was so mangled that "it would appear that the U.S. and USSR are on the same side."

Friday’s chaotic meeting in Alaska began with Trump launching into what Wolff described as "a combination of flattery" mixed with "things that he's just pulled out of somewhere...observations, it's both inconsequential and incoherent."

When Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff attempted to redirect the conversation with an actual agenda, Trump simply "talked over them," leaving the meeting rudderless after 20 minutes with "nothing clear about what anyone is doing there except that Putin is totally impassive."

Putin eventually delivered what Wolff characterized as a "history lesson," explaining "why [Russia] should conquer Ukraine." Not to be outdone, Trump launched into his own historical dissertation on the Cold War that bore little resemblance to reality, Wolff said.

He said that Trump's version of the long-running international crisis with the Soviets "didn't seem much like a war at all."

Trump aides’ attempts to stop him proved futile. "They sit there occasionally trying to interject, but you can't really interject because Trump just talks all the time," Wolff said.

He added that this worked "to Putin's advantage" since Trump showed no interest in crucial details about territory or trade-offs.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung dismissed Wolff with the comment he usually gives the Beast, calling Wolff "a lying sack of s--t" with "Trump Derangement Syndrome."

'This is going to end us': Florida growers warn Trump he's 'killing farming'

The inability of Florida farmers to find Americans willing to work to fill jobs abandoned by immigrants fearful of being taken into custody has some of them stating they will have to cut back on future plantings out of fear of going out of business.

According to a report from NPR, those farmers have suffered losses of almost half their seasonal workers and can’t afford to replace them with H2A visa workers as has been suggested by Donald Trump administration officials.

NPR’s Jasmine Garsd is reporting that despite pleas from farmers to grant amnesty to farm workers, the Trump administration is resisting, with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins telling them, “Ultimately, the answer to this is automation. And then also when you think about it, there are 34 million able-bodied adults in our Medicaid program. There are plenty of workers in America.”

According to the report, “Farmers NPR spoke to called this idea ludicrous. Many said they are paying well above the minimum wage, and yet they have gotten few American-born job applicants.”

John Walt Boatright, director of government affairs at the American Farm Bureau, agreed and explained, “The interest and the willingness to work on farms has not been there. It hasn't been there for a long time."

One strawberry farmer claimed the loss of manpower, due to the immigrant round-ups, is crippling his ability to make a living.

"The government is killing farming. This is going to end us,” he lamented before adding, "I'm drastically cutting down production next year to 35% of what I usually do."

Jeb Smith, president of the Florida Farm Bureau Federation agreed and stated consumers should be alarmed.

"I think the American consumer ought to be concerned about food being a national security issue. Any time that there is a threat to not getting a safe, affordable and abundant food supply, it should be concerning to the American public. We do not want to be dependent on foreign countries for our food. That could be a very devastating reality,” he stated before warning, “That is a dangerous thing to dabble with."
