How are we in a place where its ok to be openly racist?
I wonder if by calling everything racist, we made it where blatant racism has fewer limits.
Does anyone remember maybe 15 years ago there was a stuff who went to GIA in blackface, only he didn't realize what the facepaint he was wearing that night could be representing? He apologized and life moved on but seeing that, I posted it on another message board asking if just doing that but not realizing was racist. On that (non OSU affiliated) board, there were enough of us who were close enough that we could have an honest conversation about it. One of the black guys on there said it was racist and gave some examples of casual racism that none of the white people really knew about. It was a healthy learning experience. I even messaged the person during the conversation apologizing if posting the picture came across the wrong way and he said it came from a place of trying to understand so it was fine.
Fast forward a few years and I read about a similar situation where the person asking the question was called racist because he should have known better than to bring up something so offensive in the first place. So as a society we went from it being acceptable to ask minorities questions to help you better understand where they are coming from to asking the questions are wrong because you should automatically know better and if you don't its your fault for not figuring it out on your own.
I think people may have gotten tired of that mentality and stopped asking the questions that they probably needed to ask. It also gave the people who are more interested in hate the opportunity to push the envelope knowing people who may have inadvertently crossed a line they didn't realize was there would be less likely to see a difference between an innocent mistake and something more blatant.
So now we are at a place where people think it's cool to demonize a groups of people different than them because for every person who sees it as wrong, there will be someone else who will be right beside them. Its how someone can use the n word, have it go viral, and make a bunch of money on a gofundme. We need to do a better job of not worrying about people who have a misunderstanding or questions about where the line is and stopping people who gladly go over it.
