Trump Education Department says Columbia University fails to meet accreditation standards​

• The U.S. Education Department said Columbia University has failed to meet the standards for accreditation because it "is in violation of federal antidiscrimination laws."
• The department cited the Ivy League school's alleged toleration of harassment of Jewish students after the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas.
• The Education Department's Office of Civil Rights notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an accrediting institution that Columbia belongs to, of the alleged violation.

The U.S. Education Department said Wednesday that Columbia University has failed to meet the standards for accreditation because it "is in violation of federal antidiscrimination laws" for allegedly tolerating harassment of Jewish students on campus.

The Education Department's Office of Civil Rights notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an accrediting institution that Columbia belongs to, of the alleged violation.



The department noted that federal regulations, "accreditors are required to notify any member institution about a federal noncompliance finding and establish a plan to come into compliance."

"If a university fails to come into compliance within a specified period, an accreditor must take appropriate action against its member institution," the department said.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon, in a statement, said, "After Hamas' October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel, Columbia University's leadership acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus."

"This is not only immoral, but also unlawful," McMahon said.

"Accreditors have an enormous public responsibility as gatekeepers of federal student aid. They determine which institutions are eligible for federal student loans and Pell Grants. Just as the Department of Education has an obligation to uphold federal antidiscrimination law, university accreditors have an obligation to ensure member institutions abide by their standards."


CNBC has requested comment from Columbia on the department's move.

The department's Office of Civil Rights in early February began investigating Columbia for possible discrimination or enabling harassment of Jewish students and faculty in violation of Title VI, the section of the Civil Rights Act that bars recipients of federal funding from discriminating on the basis of race, color, or national origin.

GOP minority Whip and Republican New York City councilwoman calls for top Democratic mayoral candidate to be deported then acknowledges he is a US citizen and obviously can't be deported.​

A top New York City Republican wants mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani deported.

Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, also the GOP minority whip, did not offer any specific grounds to do so initially, other than that Mamdani had been a U.S. citizen for less than 10 years.

Her office later said Mamdani is "clearly not eligible" for deportation but "likely would have been removed" if he hadn't been a citizen due to his alleged past ties to antisemitic organizations.


The statement came after Paladino's social media post caused a considerable uproar.

"Let’s just talk about how insane it is to elect someone to any major office who hasn’t even been a US citizen for ten years — much less a radical leftist who actually hates everything about the country and is here specifically to undermine everything we’ve ever been about. Deport," she said on Wednesday night in response to a 2019 post from him expressing his support for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Trump calls for scrapping debt limit​

President Trump on Wednesday doubled down on calls to scrap the nation’s debt ceiling, pressing for bipartisan action to abolish it and finding common ground with Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.).

“I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING. The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe. It is too devastating to be put in the hands of political people that may want to use it despite the horrendous effect it could have on our Country and, indirectly, even the World. As to Senator Warren’s second statement on the $4 Trillion Dollars, I like that also, but it would have to be done over a period of time, as short as possible. Let’s get together, Republican and Democrat, and DO THIS!” Trump said on Truth Social.


He shared Warren’s post on the social platform X from Friday, when she agreed with Trump that the debt limit “should be scrapped” and called for a bipartisan bill to “get rid of it forever.”

Warren had posted Trump’s comments on X, during which he noted that the progressive senator has long supported abolishing the debt limit in the past. He said he “always agreed with her” on the matter, adding that he hasn’t spoken to her personally about it.

“She wanted to see it terminated, gotten rid of, not being voted on every five years or 10 years, and the reason was because it’s so catastrophic for our country,” Trump said at a Friday press conference, alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Treasury Department Secretary Scott Bessent has urged Congress to raise the nation’s debt ceiling by mid-July to prevent a default, after former President Biden and GOP leadership suspended the debt limit in 2023 to push off the threat of a national default through early 2025. The Treasury Department has also warned the government would have to implement “extraordinary measures” to keep the nation from defaulting on its more than $30 trillion debt.


Trump and Warren have clashed throughout the years, and the president has mocked her with the nickname “Pocahontas” in various speeches. At this first joint address to Congress in March, Trump called the progressive senator the nickname, and she responded by clapping from her seat.

Don’t know the DOGE cuts in detail….have no idea what was and wasn’t cut as far as radar…. but there is no way this true. Weather drives my business. I can get radar that didn’t exist a few years ago for Florida to the street level…. For free……and there are tons of pay services that would be rounding error on even a local news shows budget. And everywhere else still does the weather.

It looks to me that having no debt limit would speed up the day when not enough tax revenue comes in to pay interest on debt. If no debt limit means value of the dollar goes down, then it can mean price of imports could go up. We pay the price for electing people who don't have the brains or common sense to know what they're doing in government.
