At least one Republican lawmaker appears to be willing to publicly express the discomfort that many of his colleagues are reportedly feeling about the massive cuts President Donald Trump and X owner Elon Musk are making to the federal workforce.

In an interview with the Columbus Dispatch, Rep. Troy Balderson (R-OH) said that Trump's executive orders were getting "out of control" and he said that Congress ought to decide whether to abolish entire government agencies such as the Department of Education or the United States Agency for International Development.


"Congress has to decide whether or not the Department of Education goes away," Balderson said. "Not the president, not Elon Musk. Congress decides."

How much were the “further tax cuts” from last year?

That would be the TCJA that Trump signed in 2017. it went into effect in 2018 and expires at the end of 2025.

Prior to 2017 the tax brackets looked like this
10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35%, 39.6%

After Trump signed the TCJA that went into effect in 2018 and expires at the end of the year the tax brackets went to

10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%

So the top 3 tax brackets went from
33 down to 32
35 stayed at 35
39.6 down to 37

Those were the FIRST round of Tax cuts for the ultra wealthy top 3 tax brackets that are still in place today. At that time this tax cut was estimated to lose ~$1.2 TRILLION dollars in tax revenue over a decade

Per Klobuchar post. Apparently Last night they voted to not only keep the expiring lower tax rates from Trumps TCJA but even extend them further for the top 3 tax brackets.

So there were not “further tax cuts” from last year. The tax percentage is the exact same as the last 8 years. The Democrats simply attempted to carve out a tax increase on some citizens, but that was defeated.

Or Republicans say they want to reduce the deficit but are unwilling to make hard choices on the portion of their base that is most capable of taking on the burden with little to no impact on their daily lives.

Money is relative and an extra $50K annual tax burden on some would be like an annual $20 tax burden on me so I get why people with means are more capable of carrying a larger share of taxes than the guys making $50K. You are more of the all taxes are bad type-we disagree but I can understand your opinion. But spin is spin and at the end of the day if we wish to reduce the deficit it's probably not gonna all come through reduced spending so something has to give.

If you want a balanced budget I can get on board with that. We are more than capable of spending what we take in so from that perspective it's not an income issue. To reduce the amount of debt we have though, I don't think there are enough spending cuts out there to put a significant dent in that. Dave Ramsey doesn't tell people trying to get out of debt to just get in control of their spending. He says find ways to make extra money as well. Now if we have other means of making more money (tariffs won't work) cool. But unless the government starts finding highly profitable patents through free research I'm not sure how that happens.

Also, fwiw, I might not have given the best example. Government debt and personal debt are two entirely different animals but I figured it was an easily understandable comparison.

I guess we are not going to talk about the part where the Middle Class has benefited the most out of this break (Three of the bottom 4 brackets moved the most). People would lose it if they took home 3-4% less if this break just expired.

The way people package the rhetoric is fascinating.

People want better choices to be made. I understand that. But it's also like cleaning your house out. If you think of every possible use for the stuff you have you will never toss anything. Sometimes you just have to start grabbing crap and throw it out.... it's the only way the house gets clean.

I'd prefer a more thought-out approach than what we have...but it's entirely possible that approach would have no effect. Willing or not we are all going to see how it goes.

I don't like the indiscriminate way we are getting rid of folks. We should be making some effort to keep the best employees.
