'Take that bill down': GOP rep promises to tank Trump’s bill after Senate makes big change

The Senate Finance Committee just made a major revision to H.R. 1 — President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" — that multiple House Republicans are likely to oppose. And now one says the change may end up killing the legislation altogether.

On Monday, Punchbowl News co-founder Jake Sherman tweeted that the Senate's version of the bill repeals the $40,000 state and local tax (SALT) deduction that many Republicans insisted on, and reverts it back to the initial cap of $10,000. Should that $10,000 SALT cap remain in the final bill the Senate sends back to the House, Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) promised to oppose it with several of his colleagues.

"Anything less than $40,000 will result in my no vote," LaLota said. "$39,999.99 would result in a no vote from me. I've been clear about my communications with my own leadership with the Senate over there. They can't water that down."

"That was a hard-fought negotiation that happened for four months. And $40,000 was the compromise number. It's not the starting point for where the Senate could then whittle it down," he continued. "$40,000 is the number that if they send it back a dollar less, we're gonna vote no on it and our five votes are gonna take that bill down."

Many lawmakers from blue states, including both Democratic and Republican members of Congress, have been pushing for the SALT deduction cap to be increased from $10,000 (the previous cap in Trump's 2017 tax cuts) to $40,000 for those making less than $400,000 per year, given that blue states tend to have higher state and local taxes. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) recently went toe-to-toe with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) in defense of a higher SALT deduction when the House was negotiating whether to raise the cap. And LaLota pointed out that if H.R. 1 fails, the initial $10,000 SALT deduction limit would also be eliminated, meaning "unlimited" SALT deductions for all Americans.

"The result of that, if the bill crashes, ultimately, we'll get unlimited SALT back," he said. "So if the senators don't like $40,000, they really won't like unlimited because that's what comes back in the start of 2027."

The House version of the bill narrowly passed the chamber last month on a 215-214 vote, meaning if the Republicans in the House SALT caucus all oppose the legislation, it wouldn't have the votes to pass. Sherman noted in his initial tweet that the new $10,000 SALT cap was a "negotiating point," suggesting the number wasn't set in stone.

Senate Deadlocked on SALT, With Draft Bill Showing Current $10,000 Cap

(Bloomberg) -- The Senate’s version of President Donald Trump’s tax bill calls for a $10,000 cap on the state and local tax deduction — a placeholder figure as Republicans remain divided over the valuable tax break.

The draft bill — slated to be released later on Monday — includes the current $10,000 SALT cap, according to a person familiar with the matter. But the Senate will continue to negotiate the deduction as it aims to pass the legislation by a self-imposed July 4 deadline.

The House version of the bill calls for a $40,000 SALT cap, with some limits for claiming the write-off based on income. Some House lawmakers from high-tax states have threatened to block the legislation if the Senate lowers that cap.

The $10,000 language suggests that the Senate is willing to engage in a high-stakes and politically divisive negotiation to reach a SALT cap that is far lower than the $40,000 the House agreed upon.

Representative Mike Lawler of New York called a $10,000 cap “DEAD ON ARRIVAL.” Fellow New York Representative Nicole Malliotakis said the Senate draft is “insulting” and a “slap in the face.”

“The $40,000 SALT deduction was carefully negotiated along with other tax provisions by the House of Representatives and we all had to give a little to obtain the votes to pass the Big Beautiful Bill,” she said in a post on X. “We need to recognize that we have members representing blue states with high taxes that are subsidizing many red districts across the country.”

The Republican leaders of the SALT caucus, Andrew Garbarino of New York and Young Kim of California, said that $40,000 cap “negotiated in good faith with the Speaker and the White House must remain in the final bill.”

Fired Up Tucker Carlson Hits Back in MAGA Civil War: ‘It’s All So Fake!’

Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson has fired back at MAGA figures upset that he accused President Donald Trump of abandoning the “America First” movement.

Carlson, 56, ranted for 45 minutes on Steve Bannon’s show on Monday, attacking some of his former Fox News colleagues, Rupert Murdoch, and anyone who suggests he is anti-semitic for opposing U.S. support to Israel for its conflict with Iran.

“You’re not going to convince me that the Iranian people are my enemy,” Carlson said. “Again, we’re going down this here—here’s who you are required to hate. It’s Orwell, man. I’m a free man. You’re not telling me who I have to hate. I’ll decide who I like and don’t like.”

Carlson criticized Trump last week for being “complicit” in Israel’s attack on Iran. He suggested the president betrayed swing-state voters who elected him in part because he promised to end U.S. involvement in wars abroad.

Carlson’s plea for Trump to “drop” support for Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, opened him up to intense criticism from his former colleagues, including the Fox News pundit Mark Levin.

A similar outcry came from many MAGA influencers, such as Laura Loomer, who has become an unofficial adviser to Trump in MAGA 2.0.

“Can we stop pretending like @TuckerCarlson is a true Trump supporter?” Loomer posted to X on Monday. “He has never publicly apologized for what he said about President Trump. He was fired by Fox News and then was terrified Trump would torpedo his career when the texts of him saying he ‘hates Trump’ came out... His fake it till you make it ‘support of Trump’ got his son a job working in the White House. This, of course, came after Tucker asked Hunter Biden to help his son get into college. Real story by the way. Look it up. Who cares about merit when you have Nepotism, Muslim investors, and Qatari cash flow? Ammiright?”

Levin wrote that Loomer’s screed was “well said.”

Carlson told Bannon that any suggestion he accepted cash from Qatar is a lie. He said he should be free to share his opinion on how taxpayer dollars are spent, even if that puts him at odds with MAGA hardliners.

“It’s all so fake,” he said of his detractors. “I’m not playing along.”

Carlson said the U.S. is “on the cusp of entering a war on behalf of a political leader in a faraway country that’s going to really hurt my country.” He invited others to speak out if they shared the same feelings.

“What I seek is an honest, open, transparent conversation about what we’re doing and why,” he said. “And I don’t think that’s too much to ask for, considering it’s my tax dollars and my money that you’re seeking to use to achieve it. If that’s radical, then you know, we’ve distorted the terms beyond recognition.”

Bannon, 71, occasionally chimed in during the interview, but did not take a side in the latest MAGA civil war. He was a leading figure in the opposition to Elon Musk’s presence in the White House during the opening months of Trump’s second term.

Carlson occasionally got explicit while making his point.

“I just don’t want my country to be further weakened or destroyed by another one of these wars,” he said. “And boy, if you can’t connect the dots after 25 years of this s--t, you’re either too dumb to participate in the conversation, or you’re like Mark Levin, just a liar who doesn’t care.”

Carlson said he takes special exception to non-U.S. natives criticizing him on where America’s priorities lie.

“I really resent being told who my enemy is, especially with foreigners,” he said. “So a foreigner shows up and tells you who your enemies are. Really? I’ve been here a long time. I live across from my parents’ graves. You can’t tell me who America’s enemies are. Or, at least, I have a right to weigh in on that.”

Trump addressed Carlson’s criticisms over the weekend. He told The Atlantic that it was not possible for him to abandon “America First” because he was the one who started the movement.

“Well, considering that I’m the one that developed ‘America First’ and considering that the term wasn’t used until I came along, I think I’m the one that decides that,” Trump said.

The president added, “For those people who say they want peace, you can’t have peace if Iran has a nuclear weapon. So for all of those wonderful people who don’t want to do anything about Iran having a nuclear weapon—that’s not peace.”

Carlson said he wishes he could get “away” from the discourse involving him, Israel, and Iran. He said he only spoke out because he felt someone had to stand up for the silent majority of Republicans—by his estimation—who do not want to be pulled into another war in the Middle East.

“Why do we allow 3 percent of the participant, or the participants in this conversation, to define the terms?” he asked. “If you are OK with Iranian enrichment at all, you’re for the Ayatollah and you’re against Israel. What? Shut up. No, I’m not going to allow you to define the terms. You’re a total liar. I mean, these are liars—like, for real, will say anything.”

Still, Carlson insisted that he is an ally of Trump. He said he hopes the president heeds his advice on how to proceed in the Middle East.

“I would say to him, ‘You’re the only person who can bring peace,” Carlson said. “‘You should continue to try and do that. It’s difficult. It takes a long time, but your timetable is the only timetable that matters. Don’t get bum rushed. You don’t need to fix this because there’s political turmoil in [Netanyahu’s] coalition. It’s not relevant.’”

Reagan-Appointed Judge Scorches Trump Admin in Striking Down DEI Cuts: ‘Never Seen Government Racial Discrimination Like This’

A federal judge appointed during the Ronald Reagan era accused President Donald Trump’s administration of racial discrimination for its DEI-driven health cuts.

On Monday, Massachusetts U.S. district judge William Young ruled that Trump’s cuts to the National Institutes of Health were “illegal” and “void.” Young ordered the restoration of the grants.

The ruling was reported by Politico’s Kyle Cheney, who included more of Young’s comments in a thread on Twitter/X.

“I am hesitant to draw this conclusion, but I have an unflinching obligation to draw it — that this represents racial discrimination,” Young said in his ruling. “And discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community. That’s what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out.

“It is palpably clear that these directives and the set of terminated grants here also are designed to frustrate, to stop, research that may bear on the health — we’re talking about health here, the health of Americans, of our LGBTQ community. That’s appalling.”

Young added that he had “never seen government racial discrimination like this.”

“I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable,” he continued. “I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this … I ask myself, how can this be?

“I have the protection that the founders wrote into the Constitution, along with imposing upon me a duty to speak the truth in every case. I try to do that. What if I didn’t have those protections? What if my job was on the line, my profession… Would I have stood up against all this? Would I have said, ‘You can’t do this?’ You are bearing down on people of color because of their color. The constitution will not permit that. Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame?”
