Stanford Preview

I wanted to get the conversation going a little without having time to go through every match. Please post some information about other matches that you are ready to see.

For this post, I am going to call this the 3 to see. The theme this year for the wrestling team is potential. The team is full of young guys with the potential, but not a lot proven in college yet. Swiderski and Ryder already showed what they are going to bring by winning at the all star classic. For this dual 157, 165, and 174 will be 3 to see.
157 - Standford brings number 4 ranked Daniel Cardenas. This is a great opportunity for Robideau (or Travis) to show what he can do against high level competition. I keep hearing that Robideau has the mentality to be really good and is ready to go.
165 - Stanford brings number 4 ranked Hunter Garvin. Lockett is the biggest recruit from the 2025 class and many believe he can be top 4 right now. This is a chance to show where he stands.
174 - Stanford brings number 16. Norman is not ranked that highly; however, less than a year ago he wrestled Dean Hamiti to a 4-3 match. We know that Hamiti went on to win the national title, so Norman can hang with top ranked guys. This is the first chance to see Facundo in a Cowboy singlet, and Norman give an opportunity to show where he stands.

Overall this should be a really great dual, and with national duals coming up, it is exciting to see what the team looks like so far.

OSU started season with one guy (Spratley) who was considered a contender. Hence ranked 8th pre season by Flowrestling.

After All Star Classic (and VT guy at 149 taking redshirt), we added 2 guys to contender list (Casey at 149 and Zach at 184).

After Stanford dual, we will know more.

At 125: Spratley v Provo. Spratley ranked 2 and Provo ranked 11. But at 125, lots of guys are close. So even if Spratley wins close or loses, I would not view that as that bad. A big win by Spratley tells everyone he has become better than crowd at 125. In any event a good match.

At 133, Figueroa v Knox. Fig was national champ at 125 in 2024, but had a weak season in 2025 so gets no respect, ranked 12. Knox was AA last year and beat Iowa guy last year. Ranked 6. So Stanford favored. If Fig come out and really beats Knox, he become instant title contender. A close win or close loss and he become a guy you hope gets 7th or 8th at NCAA.

At 141, Young or Vega for OSU and Consiglio for Stanford. OSU should win without issue. Will be interesting to see if they send out true freshman Vega, and hoe Vega (or Young) looks.

At 149, Swiderski v Valencia. OSU guy ranked 2, Stanford guy ranked 32. Should not be a problem.

At 157, Travis or Robideau (true freshman) v Cardenas. Stanford guy ranked 4. Stanford should win. Will be interesting to see who OSU put out and how he does.

At 165 Lockett v Garvin. Stanford guy ranked 4 and just won i All Star Classic. But Lockett is a stud, even though true freshman. Should be a great match and if Lockett wins, puts him as title condender.

At 174 Facundo v Norman. Norman, though ranked 16 is tough. Facundo is ranked 19 and this is his chance to move up. Facundo is a Penn St. transfer. Was a top recruit who has done very well in freestyle but not found grove folkstyle. I think he may be a title contender (as he solidly beat favorate in freestyle), but he needs a win. But if you look at OSU's pairings at National Duals, the teams OSU will face have very good 174 pounders, so we will know how good Facundo is soon.

Stanford is not that strong at 184, 197, and 285, so OSU guys should win without problem. Only interesting thing will be how they look.

Stanford has a very good wrestler at 133 who upset Iowa kid in a dual last year and was an AA. Fig, despite being a national champ in 2024, gets no love and is ranked barely 12 or so by Flo. If he solidly beats Stanford guy, that could move him to contender list.

So you don’t think there’s a chance Cael Hughes starts at 141 Friday night?
