Boynton got Cade. And he had to hire his brother to get him. Other than that he couldn’t build a deep roster. Who was his next player to recruit besides Cade? Brandon Garrison? He was meh. Rondell Walker? Meh. Eric Dailey? Avery Anderson?
To clarify, I don't mean by elite recruiter that his evaluations were good. I mean that he got guys that we were very excited about when they signed because they were highly ranked and had offers from the kind of schools that make the tournament regularly.
Cade is obviously the crown jewel for Boynton at OSU and I don't discount that at all because he hired his brother. He did what he needed to do within the rules to land the #1 overall player in the country who would become the #1 overall NBA draft pick to the disappointment of every blue blood school in the country. Elite recruiting.
MA Moncrieffe was in Cade's class and was highly ranked (mid-60s overall). He was a bust but that was a good recruiting win.
Moussa Cisse and Bryce Thompson came in as transfers in the same class. Bryce was a McDonald's All-American (about #20 overall out of HS) and Moussa was the #12 recruit in the country out of HS (according to 247).
Eric Dailey ranked #38 and Brandon Garrison #45 overall in their classes.
Those aren't the kind of guys that OSU usually lands, particularly Cade, Moussa, and Bryce. I feel that a reasonable argument is made that Boynton was an elite recruiter based on what he brought in at OSU.
I apologize for derailing the thread topic. I won't continue to argue the point.
