Portal Inquires

RHP Sean Youngerman (6'3 235) commits to the good guys. The D2 transfer from Westmont College just completed his Sophomore season.
Made 12 starts with a 8-1 record. 3.71 ER 70.1 IP 69 SO only 15 BB opponents hit .236 this season. Supposedly throws hard and can run it up to 97 MPH on his heater. Currently pitching in the Cape for the Y-D Red Sox. Rob seems to like those pitchers from the portal and its going back to the well again!! There was another pitcher on campus this weekend as well so we'll see if he jumps on board.

Don’t we have like 12 guys in the portal? Is this common nowadays? Or are young kids being told something during recruiting that doesn’t line up once they get there?

yes we have 12 players in the portal. 9 of them are freshman…most programs have a good amount of players in the portal. With the unlimited amount of times you can transfer, freshman aren’t waiting their turn.

Texas tech currently has 7 players in the portal
TCU has 8 players

Last year 10 players went into the portal and we managed just fine. It’s going to hard to keeping young players going forward. Just the way it is

Jayson jones is a highly touted player out of HS OSU wanted badly and couldn’t land him. His sample size is small but he’s only had 118 ABs in two years at Arkansas.

This season in the cape cod, which is by far the best summer league, he’s batting .314 and has been a cape league all-star. I think the kid can play, just needs to be in the lineup everyday. If you’re making that kind of contact with wooden bats with the pitching he’s facing on a nightly basis, it should ttranslate to metal bats just fine.

Culbertson is a mystery…also pretty highly regarded. The bat was always the question scouts had coming out of HS. Supposedly is known for his glove but made 12 errors last season, which it’s not easy being a freshman SS in the SEC. Maybe they think they can fix his swing. At least he’s there for depth. He’s playing in the Appalachian league with the Greenville Flyboys and is batting.129 so his hitting struggles have continued.

Caden Powell is supposed to be the incumbent SS but was drafted in the 6th. If the Astros are willing to pay him more than his slotted value, he’ll sign. Astros have been known to botch a few negotiations so we’ll see how this goes.
