Oklahoma is going backwards

'Catastrophic cuts': Oklahoma Department of Mental Health to cancel $40M in contract items | KGOU - Oklahoma's NPR Source
This is simply part of poor, low quality governing done under the dismal Oklahoma style or brand of conservative government. Former House Speaker Charles McCall, who is running for governor, boasts while legislator that the Oklahoma Legislature moved up to the 2nd most conservative in the country. Yet, look what he has to show for it. Next to nothing. For starters, Oklahoma education fell to 50th place.

There are several Red States, possibly considered hard-core, that do a good, standout job of knowing how to govern conservatively and as a result rate well above Oklahoma in quality-of-life standards. Of the precious few, Nebraska is one of them. Look at the above map. Nebraska is one of the very few Red States with a low child poverty rate in relation to the others.

I haven't. But I hear all the time how Minneapolis is a hellhole. It shouldn't be that surprising but its not. Im guessing Tulsa isn't as bad as you imagine right now.
It's bad. From Garnet to Yale on Admiral is a solid string of the most heartbreaking humanity you can imagine.

Dallas started giving them their choice of a bus ticket to Tulsa or OKC. Most chose Tulsa. If Oklahoma were truly without compassion they'd bus them right back, but at least we're attempting to get them some help.

Tulsa is bad. Really bad. I started working downtown in the early 90’s and it was ok. Now it’s just sad.

And it’s Tulsa’s fault. They allowed the county jail to be rebuilt on the NW side of downtown. They then followed this up building the bus station about 7 blocks directly south.

The Salvation Army and John 3:16 homeless ministries are just east of the jail.

There are tent camps all over downtown. People just lying on the sidewalk at all times of the day. I am no fan of Stitt but I am glad he is doing something. This problem has been there for years predating the new mayor and even Stitt. It’s not a D or R problem. It’s all of our problem.

Also this is a huge indictment against the Tulsa faith community.

There was a federal funding freeze placed on homeless shelters. If it remains in effect, homelessness in the streets will only get worse. I have enough compassion that I don't mind some of my federal tax dollars going toward helping homeless people. Too bad a number of Republicans don't feel that way. The Mission of Hope shelter is affected in Stillwater. I sure don't want to see another homeless person laying under a blanket in downtown Stillwater, like at the NW corner of 10th and Main. The same has happened before on the south side of the strip at 5th and Washington.

I’m the same way. After reading my post I realize it might come across as insensitive to the situation. My reaction to Stitt’s actions are still mainly positive in that the discussion ball has to get rolling. There are safety issues not just for people visiting downtown Tulsa but also the homeless population. The solution has to start somewhere and the problem was/is getting worse.

Friend of Michael Brown who helped spark ‘hands up, don’t shoot’ chant dies in shooting koco

I came across this story on Facebook this AM, and was disgusted by so many of the comments...shows racism is alive and well in Oklahoma/US...
So now we've gone from lack of compassion to outright racism.

You never answered my question before you escalated, BTW.

P.S. I found the Facebook post and easily 1/2 the comments are people praying for the family of the victim or admonishing the "racist" comments.

¨you never answered my question before you escalated, BTW¨??? not sure what you are referencing here...

Yes, social media has racists. Oklahoma has racists. You can't tag the entire state/world as racist.

When you made the compassion statement I asked you.
Have you been to T-town lately?

Do people realize that the homeless are actually human beings?

"Clearing them out" does absolutely nothing to the root of the problem. Until we start addressing that, as a nation, NOTHING is going to change.

I have a challenge to each and every person here: Next time you see a homeless person, humanize them. Think about how hard their life is, what got them there, and why they continue to be there. Try to do this without disgust, anger, or judgement. Be that "good christian" you profess to be on social media to help you sleep at night.

Out of sight, out of mind is a pretty awful way to deal with human beings that are struggling. And yet here we are.

not calling out the entire state, just makes me sick that it is alive and well in Oklahoma and the US...that should not offend you...

I don´t recall you asking me about T-Town...was it recent? anyways, No, haven´t been there lately...

Nope. Have you been to T-town lately?
I come back to Tulsa a few times a year, and honestly I marvel at how pretty and clean it is. I spent quite a bit of time downtown and the surrounding area riding my bike, visiting friends, and going out to eat. I never really felt unsafe anywhere I went. If it weren't for the weather and politics, I'd move back in a heartbeat.

Denvers homeless population exploded in the last few years, mainly due to Abbott and DeSantis bussing migrants here. There are blocks and blocks of homeless encampments. I don't feel particularly safe around them, which sucks.

But, in my limited experience, Tulsa seems to be WAY better in that area. Perhaps I just didn't see it, or I'm desensitized.

Again, I don't feel that usual Facebook trolls mean racism is alive AND well. It rears it's ugly head and is quickly berated.

Here's what he's doing that you don't feel is compassionate.
He's also giving people a chance to get help instead of living like this on public property. This doesn't even address the many many more who are squatting on private property, so far, the city of Tulsa has taken no action on that issue.
