Oklahoma is going backwards

If the Oklahoma legislature passes it, the Common Sense Freedom of Press Control Act would place more monitoring requirements and financial obligations on journalists and media outlets.
State Sen. Nathan Dahm (R - Broken Arrow) authored Senate Bill 1837, which seeks to “avoid potential abuse of the freedom of the press.”

Under the proposed requirements, anyone who works for a media outlet would need to submit to criminal background checks and quarterly drug tests.

The bill would also require them to file for a license from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, obtain $1 million in liability insurance, and attend an eight-hour “propaganda-free” safety training developed by PragerU.

The license for individual journalists would cost $290 every five years. Media outlets would also need to pay $250,000 for a license every year and obtain $50 million in liability insurance. That applies to national and local outlets alike.

Those outlets would also be required to provide the following disclaimer before each story, or throughout any video: “WARNING: THIS ENTITY IS KNOWN TO PROVIDE PROPAGANDA. CONSUMING PROPAGANDA MAY BE DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH AND HEALTH OF THE REPUBLIC.”

The Oklahoma legislature will have an opportunity to consider the bill when its session begins next month. The bill could come into conflict with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which enshrines the freedom of the press.

Nathan Dahl is a moron.

Always has been.

Always will be.

The question is, are there enough other morons stupid enough to pass a monstrosity like this.
I am in regular contact w a Republican Rep. extremely genuine person who wants what is best for Oklahoma and actually listens to and proposes common sense solutions. This Rep will tell you the biggest problem w bills like this and others of its ilk is that if you vote against whether in committee or session powers that be use the leverage of purse and power to “whip” you into conformity. If you don’t they will diminish your influence and primary you w someone further to their side.

These bills some of which have zero chance at getting out of committee are used to generate clicks and raise profiles and money. Party leadership (and not to be confused w actual house or senate leadership but state and county party and PACs) will then remind party reps and senators what’s really at risk for them individually. They will cut off your $ and then elevate your expenses by primarying you. They have zero risk bc if you lose the primary they get someone further to the side and if you win the primary they know that your seat is safe bc of the party letter beside your name on the general ballot.

Politics suck. Really would seem to discourage any normal person from wanting to wade through the filth-muck in an effort to help their fellow man.

As a further result, I think corruption in the Republican Party will get worse. Maybe a Republican County AG won't prosecute a Republican office holder because he is guilty of his own corruption and doesn't want to chance it being exposed. But when caught, if the corruption of a Republican elective office is too extreme to hold your nose and vote for him, then just primary him out of there and the winner will simply go on to easily beat the Democrat or other, assuming any challengers file. Ultimately, it's up to the voters how much corruption they will accept and live with, since it's their tax money Republicans will be playing games with.

I've been a teacher for 14 years. I have worked in rural Oklahoma, inner-city Oklahoma City, and the suburbs. 12 of those 14 years were spent at either 6A-1 high schools or middle schools that feed into 6A-1 high schools. So some of the biggest schools in the state. Not once in the 14 years I have been an educator have I ever seen or heard of a furry being in a school. This stuff doesn't happen. It's a rumor of a rumor of a rumor that he heard from his father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate and this guy is taking it as fact. This is performative nonsense that is wasting time that would be better served solving this state's actual problems. Like the fact that businesses don't want to move here and school districts are hemorrhaging teachers.
I haven't heard of a furry in any school either. But that's besides the point

Oklahoma Republican legislator wants you to go to prison for 20 years or be fined up to $25,000 for viewing porn, but it would be legal if your wife sent you a porn selfie.

Yay! more national press for Oklahoma Education!

Ryan Walters Smears Oklahoma Educators While Proposing New Rules

The controversial Oklahoma state superintendent of schools suggested, without evidence, that the state teachers union and educators were creating a culture that allowed for rampant sexual misconduct against students.

“What we have seen is radical leftists and the teachers unions turning our schools into Epstein Island,” Ryan Walters said at an emergency Oklahoma State Department of Education meeting last week, referring to where Jeffrey Epstein, the late billionaire and sexual predator, would abuse children.

“They have opened up our schools and allowed sexual predators to target our kids unchecked, unwatched, and without accountability,” he added.

The meeting had been called because of sexual misconduct allegations against a high school teacher in the Western Heights school district in Oklahoma City. Earlier this month, a group known as the Oklahoma Predator Prevention accused the teacher of inappropriately texting with someone he believed to be a minor. According to KFOR 4, the teacher reportedly was not arrested. (The Oklahoma City Police Department told HuffPost it did “not have anything on that individual that would be open record.”) OSDE suspended his teaching license at the meeting.

Walters claimed that there were many concerns about sexual predators in the state’s schools, which he oversees. He said he believes the vast majority of schools do not have issues with sexual predators, but that the state school board was seeking to suspend 17 more licenses across Oklahoma.

When making his claims about predators being prevalent in state schools, Walters singled out several specific districts, including Western Heights, which Walters had previously targeted. In September, OSDE announced an investigation into the district after it was revealed that a school principal was moonlighting as a drag queen and he had prior charges of a child sexual abuse material dismissed. The school district responded by saying that the principal had passed a background check and had his teachers license renewed by Walters himself.

“We’ve had some significant issues with sexual predators in our schools,” he said. “These teachers have targeted children and violated parents’ kids in a way that is unimaginable.”

Walters went on to propose new policies that he said would protect kids from predators. However, the proposals — which have not been circulated to the public or presented to board members yet — are vague, and at this stage don’t provide schools with clear guidance.

Walters said the first rule “clarifies what community standards are in application to a teacher certificate. If a person cannot uphold those community standards…we will act to pull their teaching certificates.” But he did not say what these community standards would be.

He also said he would tie a school district’s accreditation to their ability to hire educators with “good” background checks and holding the district accountable for allowing school officials to go “unchecked.” He did not provide further guidance on how schools should hold staff accountable for teacher misconduct.

The Oklahoma Education Association declined to comment, citing the vagueness and lack of clarity surrounding the proposed rules. Walters did not respond to a request for comment.

Walters has been targeting educators since he became head of Oklahoma schools inJanuary 2023, after serving as Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt’s secretary of education from September 2020 to April 2023. (Walters resigned from Stitt’s administration after Oklahoma’s attorney general informed him it was illegal to serve in both roles.)

Walters has referred to members of the teachers union as “terrorists” who “indoctrinate” children. He has also been a big proponent of the false claim that books with LGBTQ+ themes are explicit content and are inappropriate for children, and has repeatedly claimed that there’s pornography in Oklahoma schools — although, when pressed by lawmakers, he was unable to provide any evidence of this.

At an OSDE meeting last June, Walters played a video that alleged that teachers who spoke up for LGBTQ+ rights were secretly defending child sexual abuse. Educators said the video made them fear for their lives, and even pushback from his fellow Republicans hasn’t forced Walters to tone down his rhetoric.

The next state school board meeting is on Thursday, where community members should expect to hear more about the proposals. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is in the midst of a severe teacher shortage, despite the state’s attempt to lure educators with bonuses and increased benefits.

Can teachers, retired teachers, and our unions sue him for slander? He’s bat sh t crazy, delusional, and dangerous. Who’d want to teach here or even live here with the inmates running the asylum?

It's reason #1-#100 why I am leaving education. Love the kids, love the job, but the government is so anti-teacher that its not worth it anymore.

Walters is an idiot and he should focus on administrative expense reductions and migrate the captured savings to increased teacher pay.

That said, I haven’t seen any impact of what he says effecting teachers. Mom, wife, and daughter are all educators - all three think Walters is a loon, but all three will tell you he doesn’t affect their lives at all.

Which is sad because we have had back-to-back failures at State Superintendent. There is so much they could do to improve lives of students and teachers, but both focused on the wrong items, IMO.

The best thing they could do to help students is get rid of bad teachers.

I just see where things are headed. I haven't been directly affected yet but I don't want to wait around for it to get worse. I see the writing on the wall as they say. I have 14 years of experience and 2 degrees in education and I am just now at a point where I am somewhat comfortable financially. However, all it would take is for one major thing to go wrong and I would be back to square one. Just a bunch of reasons why I am looking to transition into something else.

Do you know how you get rid of bad teachers? Make teaching an attractive profession again. When I first started teaching I couldn't find a job to save my life. Lucked into one last minute. Others I found because I knew people. Now? I can walk into just about any school district off the street and they would throw the job at me. Honestly, I can count on one maybe two hands the number of truly "bad" teachers I have worked with who had no business around children. The others are people who were thrown into situations they weren't prepared for, with kids that have no sense of consequences and ran all over the teacher. Do you want to help kids? Start holding their parents and guardians responsible for their actions. Kids only do what they have seen and what they have found out they can get away with.

Oklahoma superintendent appoints 'Libs of TikTok' creator to Library Media Advisory Cmte.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — On Tuesday, the Oklahoma State Superintendent appointed the woman behind the controversial 'Libs of TikTok' social media account to the state's Library Media Advisory Committee.

Superintendent Ryan Walters tapped Chaya Raichik, who does not live in Oklahoma, to be on the committee.

“Chaya is on the front lines showing the world exactly what the radical left is all about – lowering standards, porn in schools, and pushing woke indoctrination on our kids,” said Walters. “Because of her work, families across the country know just what is going on in schools around the country. Her unique perspective is invaluable as part of my plan to make Oklahoma schools safer for kids and friendly to parents. Chaya has a much-needed and powerful voice as well as a tremendous platform that will benefit Oklahoma students and their families.”

Raichik notably runs the X account Libs of TikTok. The account is extremely far-right and anti-LGBTQ+, and has been known to post heavily-edited videos. The account was permanently banned from TikTok.

Superintendent Walters has long been a supporter of the account and Raichik and has retweeted the account several times even when it led to bomb threats against Oklahoma schools.

How do you do that.
Honestly? Administrators need to regrow their spines and start holding kids accountable for their behavior. But with that, you would have to pass laws that allow them to. Their hands are tied so much with what they can do. Kids come to school once every 10 days so they don't get 10 days dropped for nonattendance. Kids are allowed to disrupt the learning of their peers with zero consequence and the parents just enable the whole thing because they don't want to deal with it. No Child Left Behind sets the expectation that every kid can just fail through school and still graduate. Honestly, we should stop grouping kids into grades by age but by ability level. You can't read after the 3rd grade? Sorry, you are staying here until you can or we figure out there is some disability and provide services. That will never happen though because of how engrained sports are in our schools. No one wants the 16-year-old 7th grader playing tackle football.

Walters sounds like he's still obsessed with school problems that have mostly either never existed in Oklahoma schools or were already taken care of. As I've mentioned before, the Oklahoma Legislature took care of a number of his "woke" problems before he even entered office. For starters, all school students claiming to be transgender have to use the restroom corresponding to the sex they were born with. Will Walters ever move on? I doubt it.
