France’s train network hit by 'massive attack' hours before Olympics opening ceremony

PARIS − Hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday, France's national train service said it was targeted by several "malicious acts" that caused disruptions to its high-speed lines.

"Arson attacks were started to damage our facilities," SNCF said in a post on X.

The fires were caused by vandalized signal boxes and electricity pylons at several rural locations outside Paris. However, they had a knock-on impact on services at some of the capital city's main train stations.

The incident comes as French and international security officials have rolled out an extensive security operation for the Olympics involving tens of thousands of extra police and military personnel on the streets.

The rail service said that up to 800,000 passengers were impacted by the "massive attack" and it asked them to postpone trips. SCNF said the incident was aimed at "paralyzing the network."

SCNF said some overhead cables were cut and burned in what it called an act of "sabotage." The Paris prosecutor's office opened a criminal investigation. There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

One line impacted was between Lille and Paris, a city in northern France where preliminary games of men's and women's basketball and handball knockout stage games are being played.

Jean-Pierre Farandou, SNCF's CEO, told French media that at least two trains that were affected were carrying Olympic athletes on their way to the Games' opening ceremony.

Farandou characterized the incident as a "premeditated, calculated, coordinated attack.” He said railway maintenance workers thwarted a suspected sabotage attempt along tracks heading southeast of Paris.

There were also disruptions to Eurostar trains running between London and Paris. Other international train routes into France from Germany were also experiencing delays.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said that no American athletes were affected by the train disruptions because they were mostly traveling on buses. SCNF said there could be delays through the weekend.

TGV trains remain parked at Gare Montparnasse after damage to high-speed rail lines caused delays and cancellations on July 26, 2024, in Paris, France. French rail company SNCF says its high-speed network was vandalized with the suspected aim of disrupting the rail system before the Olympic opening ceremony.
French and international security officials are on high alert for disruptions to the Olympics. In a Games first, the opening ceremony will take place later Friday outside, along the river Seine. France's capital is in virtual lockdown ahead of that and intelligence gathering on extremist plots and cyberattacks has been boosted.

Organizers have also prepared for the possibility of civil unrest.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal warned those responsible that they would face lengthy jail time and substantial fines. In an appearance at the Olympic village, where athletes are staying, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said he didn't have any concerns and had "full confidence in the French authorities."

Its suspected to be Russian sabotage at this point in time.
Wouldn't be surprised. Suspected to be behind a lot of the fires in Europe recently (associated with defence industry). Macron has been one of the most vocal EU leaders about supporting Ukraine and potential to have boots on ground there. So it makes sense that Russia would want to give them a black eye for it

The thing is, all of these things make further intervention by France more likely. Not really sure what their strategy is here.

Kremlin responds after Russian man arrested over alleged plot to destabilize Olympics

Kremlin spokesperson has confirmed that Moscow has read "curious information" about the arrest of a Russian national looking to sabotage the Olympic Games.

The French rail network has been heavily disrupted after cables were subject to arson attacks in the early hours of Friday morning, something Eurostar believes to be "coordinated". Three fires were reported near the French Atlantique, Nord, and Est high-speed lines, affecting the entire network that runs between London, Belgium, and through France.

A Russian national was arrested on Wednesday as French police believed they were involved in plots to destabilize the Olympics. The Kremlin says they need more information from the French authorities after a series of attacks were later carried out.

The disruption occurred just hours before thousands of people were set to travel to Paris for the opening ceremony, and it's believed that 250,000 have been affected. Several trains have been canceled and those running are facing major delays.

A spokesperson for Eurostar said: "Due to coordinated acts of malice in France, affecting the high-speed line between Paris and Lille, all high-speed trains going to and coming from Paris are being diverted via the classic line today Friday 26 July. This extends the journey time by around an hour and a half. Several trains have been canceled.

"Eurostar’s teams are fully mobilized in stations, in the call centers, and onboard to ensure that all passengers are informed and can reach their destination." It's not yet clear if all of the attacks were linked, but the French authorities are currently investigating.

While people have been affected ahead of Friday's opening ceremony, it's estimated that 800,000 travelers will be impacted over the weekend. Those looking to fly into Paris will also be forced to wait, as the three airports located in and around the French capital are closed on Friday as a security precaution.

French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera told Sky News: "I condemn them extremely strongly. It’s just unacceptable. It’s probably a large-scale sabotage with some malicious acts, probably co-ordinating."

The chief executive of France’s rail operator SNCF, Jean-Pierre Farandou, went as far as to say the "French are under attack" after the fires were reported. Farandou told BFMTV: "We are absolutely sorry that we are not able to run the trains expected by the French people.

"Today, it is the big departures that are being attacked, it is the French that are being attacked." Despite fan attendance being impacted, the opening ceremony will take place on Friday down the River Seine, with over 10,000 athletes set to be paraded during the event. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. ET and is expected to last four hours.

Does the group on the right side of the runway look like they are at the last Supper? I think not. Someone just wants to stir up shit.

I'm seeing Mike Johnson and American conservative politicians losing their minds over the Paris opening ceremony calling it satanic and making fun of Christianity

It was very clear to anyone who took any Greek Mythology classes this had nothing to do with the last supper

It was very clear to everyone else that it was a mockery of the last supper and they knew it would cause outrage in the Christian community. They got just exactly what they wanted.

Ha! Yeah, I’m sure that was the first thing that came to your mind. It only took about 24hrs of backlash (even from within France) for the organizers and some progressives to come up with this defense.

Now put up the comparison between these and the opening ceremony depiction and then the same for the Last Supper….Hmmmm. And this was obvious so was the immediate response…right? Not after 24hrs of backlash?

There is so much wrong w the faux outrage of this.

1)The Lord’s table is open to EVERYONE. And that means EVERYONE. Doesn’t matter if you agree or not. Jesus was not sent to condemn so I’m pretty sure neither are we elevated to that.

2)This was not a depiction of the Last Supper. You snowflakey sheep wouldn’t even have thought about it had someone not figured out they could generate outrage and then raise $$$ off the outrage. The numbers don’t even add to the 12+1.

3)The painting of the Last Supper should draw equal outrage. It depicts 13 clearly European individuals which is inaccurate. 1 of which is clearly a woman (But you’ve probably fallen in line that this was John). And that woman is most likely nursing seated at the right hand (look up what this means) of a very effeminate looking Jesus.

4)The painting of the Last Supper was done by an individual who is alleged to have been homosexual and if I remember correctly has 0 pieces of work in the Vatican bc of this fact.

5)Where was the outrage when a self professed non Christian hawked the Bible for profit that had the cover engraved w an American flag and contained the Declaration of Independence and Constitution on the inside? If you didn’t speak up then, please sit down and excuse yourself from further embarrassment.

You are in a cult.

Several artists have painted The Last Supper so maybe you were thinking of one of them. But the most famous was by Da Vinci. Da Vinci does have artwork displayed in the Vatican.
