I'm calling it right now. The ACC will not add Stanford, Cal, or anyone else. No way they get enough agreement to pull off something like that. This is the commissioner (and the schools with a lot to lose) trying desperately to pull something out of the hat to keep it together. They see what is happening to left behind PAC-4 and it has them terrified.
It similar to what went down with the PAC, but honestly worse. Had the PAC expanded a year ago they likely would have saved themselves. Their's was mostly a product of hubris and foolishness by a few specific schools (likely including ASU). The ACC however is in a worse situation. The schools are far too unequally yoked. No way any one school that would benefit from a collapse (or thinks they will) would vote for expansion That would simply make them more locked in. ANY expansion 100% would do that. It just adds another voting member to oppose them.
The only chance this could happen is if it could drive a path toward GREATLY increased revenue to appease the top dogs. That is just not possible. With Stanford and Cal's low rating/fan support they just don't bring that much to the table. On top of that it would significantly increase everyone's travel costs (Not just Stanford and Cal).
So why is this happening? My guess is desperation. Even though they all know it is likely futile, they are grasping at straws to find stability. The ACC is in a VERY bad place right now, and I think FSU is about to step out and make it a hell storm. This could make the last year of drama with the PAC look like my daughter's kindergarden play.
