Conference Realignment - What's next?

I'm calling it right now. The ACC will not add Stanford, Cal, or anyone else. No way they get enough agreement to pull off something like that. This is the commissioner (and the schools with a lot to lose) trying desperately to pull something out of the hat to keep it together. They see what is happening to left behind PAC-4 and it has them terrified.

It similar to what went down with the PAC, but honestly worse. Had the PAC expanded a year ago they likely would have saved themselves. Their's was mostly a product of hubris and foolishness by a few specific schools (likely including ASU). The ACC however is in a worse situation. The schools are far too unequally yoked. No way any one school that would benefit from a collapse (or thinks they will) would vote for expansion That would simply make them more locked in. ANY expansion 100% would do that. It just adds another voting member to oppose them.

The only chance this could happen is if it could drive a path toward GREATLY increased revenue to appease the top dogs. That is just not possible. With Stanford and Cal's low rating/fan support they just don't bring that much to the table. On top of that it would significantly increase everyone's travel costs (Not just Stanford and Cal).

So why is this happening? My guess is desperation. Even though they all know it is likely futile, they are grasping at straws to find stability. The ACC is in a VERY bad place right now, and I think FSU is about to step out and make it a hell storm. This could make the last year of drama with the PAC look like my daughter's kindergarden play.

Alright, well, just… hang on a second!

What was the play about?

I’m seeing the stuff about Stan, Cal, and ND joining the ACC. That makes sense for Stan & Cal, but why would Notre Dame want to join a conference that is the next domino to fall? The SEC is just waiting for FSU, Clemson, UVA, and UNC to get their ducks in a row and come over. At that point I’m sure BC, NCST, VaTech, Miami go the B10 or B12. And then there’s nothing left. And like the other poster said these schools getting ready to bolt won’t (or at least shouldn’t) vote for expansion anyways.

ND is clearly afraid of joining the SEC and B10. I wonder if the B12 is in their future?

ND is enjoying their elite one team conference. They won’t go anywhere else until they are forced to by a governing body or simple economics.

My bet for how it will go down is the B1G approaches them when the ACC falls apart and says "$h!t or get off the pot". They either join the B1G once and for all, or they stay independent, nothing else. What ND does with that ultimatum determines who and how many others the B1G targets to round out whatever their goal number is. I think there'll be a courtship battle of sorts over UNC and UVA, maybe Miami. FSU and Clemson are $ec bound, Duke is a good candidate for the B1G, the rest are hoping for a life raft from someone, anyone. 20 seems like a good number for the 3 majors to ultimately end up at, to get to that my money is here...

B1G (needs 2) - ND, UNC and/or UVA, Duke
$ec (needs 4) - FSU, Clemson, UNC and/or UVA, Miami, maybe us from the Big 12 for final spot if all else fails
Big 12 (needs 4) - NCST, VT, Louisville, whoever else is best whether UConn, Pitt, or other

If the current $75 bazillion per Big 10 school continues to increase, I'm not sure they can justify declining the invite at the time of the next media contract.

Oh for sure but that time might be coming sooner rather than later. At some point these super conferences may not schedule them and then they will be forced to join a conference. Not to mention the economics of it.

Chip Kelley suggested that the 64 P5 schools all become independent and schedule each other. No conferences.

I don't see that happening unless NCAA mandates the maximum number of home games. Otherwise Alabama will never leave their state. 8-9 home games every year, while Vanderbilt plays only 2-3 home games.

I can’t see why UVA, UNC, FSU, or Clemson would ever vote for this. If they need 12 I can’t see it happening.
Maybe the ACC should contact the Saudis and see if they can get a Liv Golf type deal!!! I am sure those Arabs would just jump on that right away!!! 😆

That's actually brilliant. Could you imagine if the big three conferences got all their deals locked in, felt great about it, then the remaining PAC and ACC schools go out and get Saudi or Chinese money and go LIV style somehow? That would be such an epic twist, and at this point, wouldn't even surprise me. Its total chaos.
