Conference Realignment - What's next?

This is the first convo I’ve had with this person that didn’t come with details and facts. Which is why I didn’t follow up or press the convo. That text could be wishful thinking, it could be frustration and pride, could be desperation.

Everything I’ve shared about UConn on this board has been grounded in facts. This text felt a bit weird and I wasn’t even going to share it until I saw the “exploring all options tweet”.

Again, I know, for a fact, Yormark really wants UConn. He pitched them, not the other way around. He spent a lot of time on that campus a few months ago and met with a lot of coaches one-on-one. He covets the NYC market. And UConn was absolutely told to expect an invite.

Now with the PAC 12 situation and how quickly that unfolded, I have to assume things changed.

I still believe Uconn is a matter of “when”, not “if”. But I also would be shocked, despite that message, if it happened this round.
Uconn is betting of FSU and Clemson bolting for greener pastures. At this point the end game looks like 3 massive 20-25 team super conferences and right now it is shaking out to be Big XII, Big 10 , and SEC that will survive.

FSU president has made it VERY clear they want out of the ACC. IF an only if FSU or Clemson leave the ACC does UConn have any shot of the Big XII IMHO and then it would still be iffy because I bet the Big XII would have much higher sights of teams to take from the ACC than UConn

I appreciate your insight into this. I think that Yormark is doing a great job and I love his aggressiveness but I still believe that investing anything in basketball is stupid. Football pays the bills and nothing else. Basketball barely turns a profit and is losing popularity at a tremendous rate.

However, like some have mentioned already about the Vandys and Rutgers of the world, it is good to have a few guaranteed wins every year. A whole league of teams beating each other up with a 4 loss champion won't be great for us long term.

I totally agree with this.

I think the only way UConn makes it in at this point is if it’s with like Louisville, Va Tech, etc.

I think Yormark will at some point put his foot down on it - but he’s not going to win that fight this round.

Add this to the realignment - what happens to the traditional bowl structure/opponents?

Rose Bowl - BIG vs DED?
Sugar Bowl - has been XII and SEC, does it stay?
Orange Bowl and Citrus Bowls probably ok with ACC still in play.
Fiesta Bowl?
etc etc etc

How many more things will XII pick up in Vegas? Football Championship Game? Basketball tourney? Baseball Tournament? Can't imagine there won't be more out west if the 4 corners schools are all in.

Fun times, as @GratefulPoke said, I am here for it. Also fun to talk about since we have nothing to do with the rest of this shite.

All those bowls are quarterfinals for the playoff starting next year and has been.

I know OSU and WSU add zero value to the Big 12, but if ASU and UU are are dragging their feet even the least little bit I'd be very tempted to tell them to pound sand and throw the lifeline to OSU and WSU instead out of pure spite. Oregon and Washington are gone, and with them any chance you had at an already putrid streaming deal with Apple. Why in God's name would you still have any reservation about joining the Big 12 vs. a life of destitute nothingness in the MW? Nobody else is coming to save you, hop on board NOW or die a miserable death. The choice is yours.

I am starting to think the same. The strength of the big 12 is that everyone is on the same page. Adding two teams who dont want to be here messes with that. We know how that song and dance goes.

Heard today that the 12 team playoff is only a 2 year deal and will immediately be getting renegotiated based on everything that has happened. I didn't watch many Rose Bowls for example but the pageantry of these games is gone a long with so many other things.

Stand pat with AZ. Wait for ACC to disintegrate, and pick a couple from there. I’m sure they will be more receptive than asu and UU plus more eyes on east coast than with the remaining corners.

I've read that too. That is very concerning for anyone outside the P2

We do know how that song and dance goes, but this time won't be the same. ASU and UU are not the belles of the ball they apparently think they are. At no future time is the $ec going to come running for them like they did the last 2 defectors, and neither will the B1G. Reality is a tough pill to swallow, but sooner or later they're going to have to do exactly that. Best do it now because it's only going to become more painful over time.

I think I like the idea of staying at 14 for a week and seeing if the SEC decides to make a move. Then grabbing from the ACC. Utah and ASU will still be there, maybe for a reduced share now that they've lost all leverage.

The FSU president begging openly leads me to believe they don't have anything serious going but who knows.

I wonder if UCON is still in play just because not only it aligns with Yormark's vission for BB super conference for the next round of TV negotiations, but also it adds another east coast presence and eases travel concerns for WV, Cinci, UCF. The ACC is next to fall apart with FSU and Clemson getting antsy. Just doesn't seem like ACC is gonna fall apart this round of realignment soap opera. I could see us staying at 14 and holding to see what happens in ACC

I don't buy the whole "easing travel" narrative that some think UConn provides. Mapping it out, the flight from Cincinnati to Storrs, CT is the same distance as to Tulsa, and longer than to the KS/IA schools. It's only about 200 miles less than to DFW/Houston, which equates to, what, 30 more minutes on a plane, and still only 1 time zone over? Yea travel is going to suck for UCF, sorry they're just on an island until if and when some ACC schools get added. For now, Cincinnati and WV's travel burden can be just as well eased by only having to fly to AZ/UT/CO once or maybe twice in the same year as it could be getting to travel to CT instead.

...at 1AM. If they and Utah decide to join, I'd love it if we turned them down. B1G isn't taking them.

They ought to let them in but offer them 19 million like the pac 12 deal which was include Washington and Oregon and won’t be anywhere close to that now. Don’t give them equal revenue lol
