A long winded post about Eric Morris

TLDR: Eric Morris will turn OK State in to a winner in no time.

I come in peace, if any of our fans have been salty, let me apologize on their behalf. 98% of us know EM leaving was a no brainer. He coached 80% of home games in front of 13k fans.

To win is todays college football you have to put together a team in one season, despite being gutted offensively every off season EM rebuilt that side of the ball and we never had an issue putting points on the board every year. We were not very successful in the red zone his first two years here, especially in side the 5 yard line. but this season I saw EM conquer red zone play calling, he is as good as anyone in the country at it. At OK State he will actually be able to retain and develop players not rebuild the entire offense every year plus the money to add from the portal. Patrick Cobbs is one of the best running back coaches in the country, he consistently identified overlooked players and developed them in to FBS players. Cassidy should not be judged on this season, and even if you do go off that, consider that we faced three option teams which explains the rushing woes and had 4 players starting from the 2024 defense that was the worst in the country. There was not a ton of talent on that side of the ball and overall the defense was still respectable. We went from worst in the country to middle of the pack and were one of the best tackling teams according to PFF. We forced a boatload of turnovers he is a sharp mind and if he can keep the scoring defense in the top 60 this is a 10 win team every season because your offense is about to soar.

My mentor played in the NFL, his son plays for the patriots currently, he knows football better than anyone I’ve ever met. He called Cignetti a winner long before he was hired at Indiana, same with McGuire, he told me when Morris was hired he was an incredibly gifted play caller and if he gets a decent defense UNT will win like never before and that’s exactly what happened. The same will unfold at OSU.

You have a new fan, I don’t have a P4 team I root for but really can’t wait to see Hawkins and Mestemaker dominate I have zero doubts their skills will translate and I have zero doubt OSU is a 10 win team by year two if not next season.

First, congratulations to North Texas on an amazing season. You all picked up a lot of fans late in the year. I appreciate your post. It is always helpful for an insider to give context to things such as the reason for the rushing defense statistics. I didn't realize that UNT played 3 option teams. Love hearing about Cobbs and also that Morris has improved so much in red zone play calling. That is often a struggle for teams that air it out so heavily. I hope that in the near future college football will get cleaned up so that teams like North Texas aren't victimized for having a successful season. While I am excited about Morris and all the UNT players coming in, it is definitely a picture of a broken system. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone, even the teams benefitting from the portal hate the system. I’m tired of even discussing it it’s a year to year league, you better have a coach, GM, and scouting staff skilled enough to put it all together in a few months. Luckily OSU just hired a bunch of brilliant minds for those positions.

Wanted to add some insight on UNT transfers

Hawkins- go watch his hudl it’s laughable how he is bouncing off players. He barely played the first three games making his stats that much more impressive. I was so impressed with his tape I made a thread in April of last year the responses are comical looking back.

Mestemaker- Flashed NFL talent, arm strength and accuracy is incredible, he did struggle when pass protection folded but he should learn from that. HE IS FAST, he had a 80+ yard touchdown in his first start. EM did not run him, not even spread option last season he is athletic I hope we see a little of that next season.

Terrence Williams- Speedster, had multiple P4 offers, his stats don’t pop due to limited targets but he will thrive in this offense

Keviyan Huddleston- Worked his way in to the rotation and starting through the season, showed a decent repertoire of pass rush skills. Originally signed with TCU, should be in the DL rotation at minimum.

Quinton Hammonds- Originally a walk on, has played a ton of snaps with two years experience playing slot corner. He should get a bunch more snaps this season.

Evan Jackson- Stud. Three year starter, didn’t have a ton of chances to get interceptions due to the position he plays. Prevented a ton of big plays, should be a starter day one.

Ethan Wesloski- Last minute addition to the previous coaching staffs last class. Great tackler, fantastic in pass coverage, does get lost in the run game at times and will need to put on some more weight for this level. If he can put it all together he can be a force.

Miles Coleman- Teammates with Meste in high school. Was injured this season and played limited snaps, he can absolutely play and will hold down the slot position.

Johnny Dickson, Oroginally signed with VT to play tackle, transferred to UNT moved to guard and I like his game more than Brayden Nelson. Gets to the second level, pretty good in pass pro, should be the starting RG.

Kollin Lewis- Stud. Was the first backup for starting corners, highly graded by PFF, excited to see him develop I have no doubt his skills will translate.

Braydon Nelson- Two year starter at left tackle, great in the run game but got taken behind the woodshed against USF and Tulane giving up sacks. He should be the starting left tackle but it may take a year to adjust.

Fatafehi Valehi- Wow I did not realize he signed with OSU. Warrior, tons of experience playing interior DL. Lost him early in the season and the run defense suffered greatly. You never know how guys will bounce back from season ending injuries but he should be in the rotation at minimum.

Wyatt Young- Great player, he did rack up majority of his yards against lower ranked teams and didn’t do much against USF and Tulane so there’s some worry there. I do think he will be a great player for OSU but I do have my doubts he will dominate like he did this season.

Desmond Magiya- Very athletic, big wingspan, last minute addition to previous staffs last class like Wesloski. Played a bunch of snaps late in the season, developmental player that has flashed early in his career. Boom or bust type of player.

I think I got everyone, go mean green and go pokes!

Thanks for the kind words and breakdown of the UNT transfers. It is greatly appreciated. We are certainly really impressed with the team EM and Raj has put together in a matter of days.

I agree, CFB is broken and while we are excited about getting EM and all of these UNT players, it really sucks for UNT and does not seem fair at all. We need a lot more regulations or compensation for teams when this sort of thing happens (like what happens in european soccer).

I do think Neil Brown is a good coach and while he did not light the world on fire at WVU, I think that is a really tough job in the current CFB landscape and they were a far worse team this year with him gone.

I think Neil will get yall back on track in short order.

@Ntmeangreen12 - Thanks for the comments. You and I are similar, but in reverse. My family (dad and sisters) all went to OSU. I started going to games with my dad when Lewis Field was at street level in the late 60's. I attended junior high and high school in the 70's when OU was doing well, and had to suffer through the comments from the OU homers when I would wear my OSU shirts to school. I hate OU and bleed orange.

But, after graduation from OSU, I moved to Texas for work, My oldest daughter ended up going to UNT, and was in the marching band for four years from 2015 to 2019. My wife and I bought season tickets, and went to every home game and bowl game. I think UNT only won one game that first year, but turned it around and went to bowl games the next three years with a kid from Oklahoma, Mason Fine, at quarterback.

Thus, I became a UNT fan and have followed them even after my daughter graduated. It was a of of fun seeing the success they had this year. It quite the conundrum for me to see them gutted now, but also see OSU benefit from it.

My daughter now has a job with the university and bought a house in Denton with her spouse that is just three blocks east of the stadium. I hope I can get to some games in the future. That stadium is a great place to see a game.

btw- remember when UNT kicked the snot out of Arky at their stadium, aided by the "fake" fair catch. That was a lot of fun too.

Welcome Ntmeangreen12, and thanks for the player info. EM was always my first choice and I'm thrilled that it worked out the way it did. Can't wait to see what he can do with some serious financial backing. Best of luck to UNT going forward!

@Ntmeangreen12 can you send some trash talkers over so I don't feel as bad for UNT? Thanks for the breakdown on players.
We only have a few and they should have a little more humility. I chose UNT as my team at 14 in 2004, a bowl season, then we didn’t win more than 3 games for 9 straight years. I have seen some awful football, including a 7 OT game against FIU in 2006. Both teams were so horrendous neither could gain yards in over time and the kickers were so bad both kept missing. There were about 200 people left in the stands when the game ended around 12:30 am.

That’s awesome from what I saw on twitter we have a ton of fans who have a soft spot for us. It was definitely tough in high school which was the Vince Young era. Mason Fine is one of my favorite players ever, he couldn’t have been bigger than 5’7 170, took some massive hits and always hung in there and delivered. The Arkansas game will forever be in my memory we did not have a single upset of that magnitude for 20+ years.
