2022-2023 Off-Season

I’ve seen some discussion regarding did we come out +/- in the portal. I know I’ve got orange glasses but with our defensive changes I really feel like we came out way better on defense. Kirkland and Goodlow are huge additions to DL and Kirkland has 3 yrs left. Cobb was a loss but maybe just a slight downgrade at LB w Wright coming in. Losing Muhammad at CB hurts but it sounds like Epps was going to be “stealing” reps as a Rs-Fr.

On offense we upgraded OL and CowboyBack/TE. WR took a hit losing Johnson and Green but it could be a wash w the kid from Wazzu and getting other returners healthy. Plus it sounds like we will be going more 3 wide vs 4.

The biggest question is at QB but to be honest we would be looking at losing Spencer in a traditional non CoVid cycle. I don’t think bowman is an upgrade from spencer and my biggest issue at this position as it is w the entirety of the traditional 23 class is how we approached recruiting. I think we really thought Rangel would be a solution and same w Flores but just a couple more yrs to develop him. Maybe one of them will surprise. If that is the case then I’m a believer in an 8-10 win season. If we struggle at QB and don’t see improvement in oline then we are back to a 6-8 win year.

Agreed. I do think Rangel will be good, some seem to forget Masons struggles as a true fresh when he was throw into the fire. Yes MR made some big time throws those few games he stepped in at the end of his fresh year but our offense was designed different then, in terms of we took more shots down the field and the OL was in a better situation (not by much at all). I’m excited about this season. My prediction as of right now is 8-9 wins.

You’re much more optimistic than I am at this point!

With spring ball about to start, what would you like to see/hear coming out of it?

Also, who do you see winning the QB competition?

I want to hear how Oliver is settling in at LB? How the new offensive scheme using true tight ends looks? Who the most likely starting OL are? Also of course the QB conversation though I think that will likely continue as a competition well into fall camp.

I will also add, though I REALLY hate too... who gets injured in spring. Remember we lost Birmingham last spring for the whole year.

Good list.

I'm intrigued by the new D. Specifically Kirkland in the middle. Hoping he can be a difference maker. I think we're pretty good in the back 7(8).

I want to see a dynamic offense. Meaning....I want to see an offense that changes attack modes live during the games, and isn't limited to the handful of plays "system" that we've seen in the last 10 years. Stop running into stacked boxes. Stop using the bomb down the sideline hoping for PI so often. Use the middle of the field in the passing game. Develop an intermediate passing game in general. Pass to setup the run if needed. Use the fullback/TE/Hback position more creatively.

Difficult to project defense. I'd just like to see guys in the right position and sound tackling.

Just win. Dynamic means nothing. Just win

I'm not sure what you're driving at, but "dynamic means nothing"...until it does. Then what...?

Fact is, we could stand to evolve and become more agile with our offensive schemes so we can make legit adjustments.

Winning 2-0 with basically no offense is just the same as winning 52-50 with a dynamic offense. Just win. Couldn’t care less how. Our 12-2 season has an offense that was definitely less than dynamic.
