Interesting HC candidate

Clearly David Taylor was better wrestler than Scott. But not sure how that makes him a better coach. Even though Gable/Sanderson were top wrestlers and top coaches.

I would go with Scott unless it was clear Taylor offered some advantages in recruiting.

Why would Coleman give up a HC position if he wasn't the "head coach in waiting".....

What are the odds of Coleman sticking around if David Taylor gets the job? I’d say zero which is probably why this is no more than going through the motions to try to show that you actually looked around when you had Coleman targeted the whole time. Not really sure why we’d go with a guy who has never coached a single match versus a guy who went to North Carolina and has proven success as a D1 head coach plus he’s a Cowboy. You can say he wasn’t as good or wrestler as David Taylor but that would be your opinion since they never wrestled and Coleman was darn sure no slouch.

Chad is doing his due diligence which is what he should do as AD (and no, I don’t mean googling). From CP tweet, it mentioned that OSU met with four other candidates before the Taylor meeting. The question I keep coming back to is do we look outside of OSU family for next HC? If not, it is likely Scott or possibly Pat from NC State.

If you go outside of OSU family, Taylor would be a splashy young hire with Olympic credentials, Pennsylvania ties for recruiting (think transfer portal too), and would think Dake could join as an assistant coach. That would be an epic staff no matter if it ultimately succeeds or fails.

Chad should consider every possible option. There are few coaching jobs in wrestling that are better, maybe none. We need to find the best candidate and bring them in. I don't know who will be the best in ten years, but I'm glad they are looking at all options .

Not saying this would happen, say we do hire DT. How would someone like a Doug Gottlieb feel? Was told he lacks coaching experience but hire someone who has zero coaching experience?

I don't think you can compare sports. You don't have the history of great BB players being great coaches like you do in wrestling.

I would hire Scott. I think things were better this year because of him (like fewer injuries). And even if we don't get WH, we had good year in portal.

But Gable and Sanderson, the 2 best wrestling coaches in modern times were superstar wrestlers. DT is superstar wrestler. Coleman Scott is not.

Bird, Abdul-Jabbar, and Magic were superstar players but none were superstar coaches.

I would argue an Olympic bronze medal is pretty damn impressive and would classify as a superstar. Top 25 American wrestler of all time no but possibly top 100, maybe?

Many of us know Coleman well. Wonder if Coleman would get moved to girls or RTC if DT is brought in and compensate him well also to stay? He’s very valuable in that room. Similar to how Eric G was 20 years ago. Times change and people change but Coleman is a pretty straight arrow and great guy and coach

I might be mistaken but John Smith had little or no coaching experience before becoming OSU HC in early 1990s.

I was under the impression that Scott was brought in as part of potential succession plan knowing that Smith was close to retirement (could still be the case for all we know). I really hope he wasn’t “promised” something only to have the rug pulled out from under him as some seem to be indicating.

I don’t believe anything like that was ever actually published. It was just the running assumption by a lot of people.🤷‍♂️
Yeah why else would he leave UNC as their HC? I mean he loves OSU so there is that or maybe he was ready for something new in coaching career?

I think people were trying to connect the dots when Espo left for USA wrestling (after two decades at OSU) and the very next day Scott put his resignation in at UNC. That was definitely printed in the STW News Press in Dec’23 so maybe could have come from that article.

It was also 30+ years ago. Times have changed a little bit.

I saw somebody reference Myron Roderick... that was 70 years ago and Myron also had to be the tennis coach!

The logic made perfect sense, no doubt.

I want the coach to be whomever understands best just how far ahead PSU is right now and has a plan to fix it.

FWIW, I caught Flo podcast today and CP seems to think Taylor will not take the job and Scott will be named the new HC.

He also said that OSU took a swing at PSU top assistant Casey Cunningham for the job.
