Who Should OSU Hire as Next Basketball Head Coach?

I wouldn't hate McCullom, but be prepared for the hate train from the general fans, and its a lot of risk for Weiberg's first major hire.
Yes, it's risky, but every hire has risks. His main risk is the lower level of competition. He has over ten years of experience as a head coach, has been in high pressure games that tested his mettle, won national championships, and has presumably gotten the max out of players who may not be elite athletes.
Seems like that experience ought to equip him to succeed.
But you're right, it carries risk. Is another candidate less risky, in his own way?

Why does there seem to be no mention of Bryce Drew? Is it because of his Vandy stint? His time at GCU has been very impressive and his team competed very well against Alabama in the second round.
Fair or not, I don't want anyone in that family anywhere near our program. But more accurately, it has to be Vanderbilt because nobody else seems to be knocking on his door yet.

They had the upset in their hands vs. Bama, then seemingly didn't do anything but Iso ball to finish the game and give up a 17-3 run and lost. Yeah it's just one game, but Charles Barkley nailed it when he asked what in the world their gameplan was?

Every coach has some sort of baggage. Either lack of D1 experience or an unsuccessful stint somewhere else. Otherwise, they wouldn't be an option for anyone. Unfortunately lack of D1 experience is going to scare a bunch of fans off since we just had 7 years of it. I just hope whoever we get can have a coherent offensive game plan and plays team basketball.

If you take away Tyon Foster Grant, was GCU that impressive? They ran zero offense in that game, all they did was iso TFG and he went to work. I don't like the Drew option, dude sucked BIG time at Vandy. He literally had a zero win conference season. Zero wins!

I totally agree. GCU could have beaten Alabama if it had a game plan. I've seen enough of ISO offense the last 7 years that lead to losing basketball that I don't want see that style of basketball here again for a while. Bryce Drew's coaching yesterday eliminated him off my "wish" list.

Boynton had no experience as a head coach either, a much more important defect or deficit in his resume than McCollum's level of competition. Running a program for over ten years, with great pressure and much success, is a far better resume than Boynton had. In particular, he's much better prepared to deal with player-head coach relationships than Boynton was, imo. I don't think Boynton ever figured that out.

I like it that McCollum checks his ego at the door, and that he can't sleep when he can't get things figured out.

That's someone who gives 110% to the firm.

Based on the most recent grid posted above by Poke2010, it seems fair to assume that two of the four listed in this post are going to either stay or move to a school in their geographic area, Sprinkle and Kelsey. That leaves Medved and McCollum. Medved doesn't impress me. McCollum does. Hope ADCW offers McCollum.
I dont understand why everyone is so sure that Sprinkle is staying out west. Or maybe looking at the news I'm late to the party, but what's his real connection? Sure born in Pullman, but that's WSU territory. Raised and played HS and college ball in Montana. Already left his Alma mater MSU for Utah state. Is staying further out west really that big of a pull? The only reason I can think UW would be his choice over us is they probably have more cash to throw at him. Neither job is going to be an easy rebuild, tough conferences, new(ish) ADs, etc...

Why exactly don't we stack up against UW aside from money if we actually did/do make a run at Sprinkle?

B1G vs. Big 12???

B1G vs. Big 12???
Ok elaborate. Aside from, again, the cash that might come from b1g, what does the conference boast that the big 12 doesn't? It's neck-and-neck every season for who is the stronger conference., each with several 4 seed or higher teams each year. Each is loaded with HOF level coaches and storied programs. The big 12 has won 2 of the last 3 titles, b1g hasn't had a team win it all since 2002. So what's the big draw if not just money?

Could also be recruiting contacts out west. Or generally liking the west in general. If location is important to him, Seattle is so much better than Stillwater, especially when money isn't an issue.

Sprinkle's Dad played football @ UW is one of the connections to that job for him I would assume
Ok there, that's something like what I was looking for. Has Sprinkle himself said something or is there a family history with UW I'm not aware of? If his dad played at UW that could be all it takes to make UW the preference. Family might all be in that Seattle-ish area too.

Money, money, money pays the bills and buys players. Like Eddie saying he would crawl to UK we better be ready to crawl to the B1G or SEC should the moon and stars align and we get an invite to either because we are not a have when it comes to cash.

$$$ and perceived prestige. Granted, BB is a different animal than FB but to those outside of the Big 12 the SEC and B1G simply have the bigger brands.

Living in the northwest topography vs midwest topography is a no-brainier from my perspective. Also, while I love OSU and always will, there are a LOT of other campuses out there that are more scenic. I try to visit other colleges when I travel, and Washington's grounds are beautiful and right on the shores of Lake Washington. Within a 2 hour drive you have amazing waterfalls, mountains, skiing, whitewater rafting, fresh sea food, etc., etc. which are all huge draws for the area over Stillwater, at least in my opinion.

Back to the point, I am hoping for McCullom at this stage of the game.
