Thorough Notes:
If Darian DeVries goes to West Virginia, then Steve Alford could be a solid backup option. He has a long coaching career with experience at various schools like Iowa, New Mexico, UCLA, and Nevada. Alford is known for having both good and bad seasons, but his age, nearing 60, may not align with the desired profile of a young and up-and-coming coach. However, some have compared his potential hiring to OU bringing in Lon Kruger, indicating that he could still be a viable option if other candidates fall through.

01:00:25
Regarding the coaching search, the focus seems to be on narrowing down the candidates to up-and-coming coaches. Two primary contenders are Darian DeVries, the head coach of Drake, and Danny Sprinkle, the head coach of Utah State. Reports suggest that Oklahoma State aims to make a decision by Monday, with DeVries being the reported top target. DeVries has strong ties to Iowa and the Midwest, having played at Northern Iowa and worked as an assistant at Creighton. His coaching style emphasizes efficient offenses and solid player development, which could be appealing to the program. Sprinkle, on the other hand, has led successful offensive teams at Drake and Utah State, showcasing a different coaching approach. Both coaches offer unique strengths and could bring valuable assets to the program.

00:36:35
Analyzing the potential impact of the coaching search on the team's roster, the current players are advised to wait before officially transferring until the new coach is hired. Chad Weiberg, the athletic director, has met with the players to discuss this strategy, indicating that a decision on the coaching position may be imminent. The uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation has led to speculation about player transfers, with remaining eligibility players likely to enter the transfer portal if a new coach is not hired soon. This transitional period presents challenges and opportunities for the team as they navigate potential roster changes.

00:33:27
In the context of player transfers and the transfer portal, the discussion shifts to the behavior of specific players like Brandon Garrison and Naz Brown. Garrison's reported interest in Oklahoma State and Washington adds intrigue to the coaching search, while Brown's decision to enter the transfer portal as a walk-on raises questions about player motivations and future opportunities. The dynamics of player movements in college basketball, especially during coaching transitions, highlight the complexities and uncertainties faced by student-athletes in navigating their careers. The decisions made by individual players can have ripple effects on team dynamics and future recruitment strategies.

Exploring the coaching styles and backgrounds of Darian DeVries and Danny Sprinkle reveals contrasting approaches to offense and defense. DeVries is known for his efficient offenses and player development process, drawing on his experience as an assistant at Creighton. In contrast, Sprinkle's teams have excelled offensively while facing defensive challenges, showcasing a different coaching philosophy. The potential impact of these coaching styles on Oklahoma State's program and player development strategies underscores the importance of aligning coaching philosophies with the program's goals and values. The diverse skill sets and experiences of both coaches offer valuable insights into the future direction of the team.

Additional Notes:

- Chad Weiberg is looking for a young and up-and-coming head coach, which Steve, at almost 60 years old, does not fit the bill for. However, Steve has experience as a head coach at various schools and has had both good and bad seasons

The hosts express their excitement for the upcoming NCAA tournament and the conclusion of the coaching search, urging listeners to follow them on social media for more updates

My thoughts:
- I must say I was impressed with Sprinkle in Utah State's Round of 64 win. His team played really well and beat a Big 12 foe (TCU) that we have had major trouble beating for several years. For me, that might move him into the top spot, especially if Sean Miller is not in play and I have not heard anything regarding him. I would be happy with DeVries, Will Wade or Dusty May, although the latter two are looking less likely.

Why Oklahoma State and Chad Weiberg Should Go All-in on Danny Sprinkle

STILLWATER – As we’ve written about over the past few days here on Pokes Report, Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg doesn’t want to waste any time in hiring a new men’s basketball coach and would like to have to position filled before next week.
One candidate which seemingly every school with a vacancy is pursuing is Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle. He’s a candidate I mentioned in my very first coaching search article and a coach who’s had a lot of success in a short amount of time. The 47-year-old out of Pullman, WA, is in just his first year with Utah State and has compiled a 27-6 overall record, Mountain West regular season champions, a berth into the 2024 NCAA tournament and was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year. All of that follows a four-year stint at Montana State, his first head coaching job, in which he took the Bobcats to back-to-back NCAA tournaments and two-straight Big Sky Conference titles, as well as a conference tournament championship.
As I mentioned, Sprinkle is in the first year of a five-year contract, which pays him $900,000 a season and increases $25,000 a year. The buyout details are as follows: “ If [Sprinkle] terminates the contract for convenience within the first two years, he owes the university 75% of the remaining salary. If he terminates it during the final three years, he owes 50% of the remaining salary. If Utah State terminates his contract without cause at any point, it owes Sprinkle 75% of the remaining salary.”
Spending $8+ million on Boynton’s contract, plus the money the athletic department has to spend on a new coach and staff shows Weiberg and the athletic department cares and is serious about making sure OSU basketball is successful. We’ve also known for two weeks that in order for Oklahoma State to go out and get a good coach, the athletic department was going to have to buyout a contract. Just shy of $3 million isn’t a bad price to pay to land a very talented, and young, up-and-coming coach.
Sprinkle is already a hot commodity and Utah State needs to do everything it can to keep him in Logan, UT. But after this season with the Aggies, Sprinkle’s name is being thrown around in just about every coaching vacancy, rightfully so, and Chad Weiberg should be doing all he can to get him to Stillwater.
One reason, or rather an example, is current junior forward for the Aggies, Great Osobor, who transferred to Utah State from Montana State following Sprinkle’s hire. I’m not suggesting he would/should come with Sprinkle to Stillwater should he get the job, but let’s just take a look at his numbers. He’s 6-8, 250 pounds, leads the team in scoring and rebounds with 18 points and 9.2 boards per game and is a physical force in the paint. Everything on that offense goes through Osobor down low, which means he gets double-teamed a lot and has to kick It back out to the perimeter, usually to an open player which puts him second on the team in assists with 95. All of that earned him Co-Player of the Year in the Mountain West.
Does this remind you of anyone from OSU this past season? This could be Brandon Garrison. He’s 6-11, 245 pounds and is coming off a great freshman season. Oklahoma State needs to have a post-driven coach, someone who can develop a talented big like Brandon Garrison and that’s Danny Sprinkle.
Mike Boynton was a point guard in college and was a guard-focused coach, bringing in and focusing on guards, albeit talented guards. Brad Underwood was only here for one season and coached Travis Ford players, another guard-focused coach.
While Garrison’s the only OSU player “officially” in the portal, partly because of spring break and offices being closed, I believe he and the other players would be willing to listen to the next head coach to see what he brings to the table. Sprinkle is a coach who can find and develop talent in the paint and with what he’s done with Osobor, I feel he could convince Garrison to stay in Stillwater and fully utilize his potential and turn him into a dominate force in the Big 12 next season.
Most Oklahoma State fans loved Mike Boynton, as they should have. He was an incredible face for the program, athletic department and university and was one hell of a person. However, lack of consistent winning and trips to the NCAA tournament sours a fan base. A great head coaching hire would reinvigotate a fan and donor base in regards to NIL, something OSU needs to help keep current players and recruit talent out of the portal, and Sprinkle would do just that.

Thanks for the great information, Grateful Poke!

I would just say one thing: Comparing Kruger to Alford is not apples to apples. Kruger was a much better coach.

Weiberg may be waiting to announce when games are not being played so I expect Monday or Tuesday. I think it will be DeVries or Sprinkle. If Sprinkle’s team is still playing we may have to wait another week.

No problem! I agree, Kruger was a better coach at that point in his career prior to OU hiring him than Alford is now. Alford is the one guy whose name has been thrown around that I frankly don't want.

If Weiberg announces a hire this coming week or the next, someone who's going around here claiming inside info should never mention that again because the credibility has been shot to hell at that point.

I think he is a great option. Dude can flat out coach. For as much as Sprinkle gets praised for what he has done, Lutz should too. Ran into a great team in Marquette.

Spent time as an assistant under Palmer at Purdue too so he's seen firsthand how a high level team is run. Would seem to be a solid hire.

Is WVU a more desirable job than Oklahoma State? I know this tweet hasnt been confirmed but if it is wow!
