If we wait until April 1st then we may as well keep him. Both the coaching carousel and the portal will start to ramp up after this upcoming weekend. Just to give a recent example, last year Tech hired McCasland before the end of March. If we are going to make a change, we can't wait until April to start.

Maybe he returns and Weiberg tells him he has 2 million in NIL to work with that would have otherwise gone to his buyout. Fans still likely wouldn't be happy. Regardless, if he comes back, I'd say his seat is red hot and he turned the heat up himself.

Whoever we hire won't be a top candidate anyway because we don't have the money. Put the money toward the buyout and get a young up and coming coach for less.
Sorry, but bringing him back sends an absolutely horrible message to the fans.
Or the AD will already know who they are going to hire so the date it happens doesn't really matter.
I doubt it happens but it is a possibility, back door deals happen all the time in college sports.
No apology necessary for me, I agree with you. Just think we might need to prepare ourselves mentally for what I believe will be the reality.
That wouldn't be any big surprise but makes me want to puke up my toenails.

Travis Ford was owed $7.2M when he was fired, and he settled for a lump sum of $3.9M. Mike Boynton's reported buyout as of April 1st is $6.67M. Hopefully we'll be able to negotiate his buyout down as well.
There are a lot of good coaching candidates at the mid-major level and a few that are unemployed. I doubt there would be a big buyout unless we try to hire someone from a high-major school.
I'm sure this will be painful financially, but it needs to happen. Hopefully we'll be able to make the change for $5M or less.
Ford accepted a new job. We had to pay the difference for the remainder of his contract. I imagine boynton will take another job like seton hall or something like that and we will pay him the difference for the remaining contract

But you are also gambling a little bit on a new coaching bringing a winning team to the school, which will bring in money in tickets, advertising, and merchandise sales. They must have taken a pretty good hit from these last few losing basketball seasons.

We aren't hiring a coach with a buyout over 1-2 million. Zero chance. I say get a young up and coming assistant from a successful program. Very likely under a million buyout. I know that is not done as often in basketball, but we can't afford to do much. Also if we get him cheaper that helps justify the change as the value compounds over the next year or three.

The sad fact is though that winning in football has NEVER been more important. The next 5-6 years of play could LITTERALLY decide the next 100 years for the success of our entire athletic department. That is what we are battling. We have to do the best we can an hopefully put ourselves in a position to be a part of the final consolidation that is coming in the early 2030s. That is why it is very possible that nothing happens with Boynton.
I want to believe we can do both. I want to believe we can still get decent value by hiring a young up and coming cheap coach, but I'm not sure I see it happening. The stakes are too high for the entire university's athletic department. Hell, for the entire university PERIOD. The forces are getting set to destroy the ability of anyone outside the B1G and SEC to even compete. It is really hard not to get depressed about it right now.

I was really surprised when I saw that KU’s athletic department made $14M more than ours last year. I thought the revenue would be pretty similar since we have a better football program and they have a better basketball program.
There's no doubt we’re leaving millions on the table every year by having an empty arena and cheap tickets. It may not be easy to find a successful coach, but it's necessary.
