Vermont Gov. Scott calls on state senator to resign after report on GOP group chat

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) called on a state senator to resign after a Politico report on a Young Republican group chat.

“The hateful statements made in this group chat are disgusting and unacceptable. The vile, racist, bigoted, and antisemitic dialogue that has been reported is deeply disturbing. There is simply no excuse for it,” Scott said in a Tuesday statement.

“Those involved should resign from their roles immediately and leave the Republican party – including Vermont State Senator Sam Douglass,” he added.

According to the Politico report, Vermont state Sen. Samuel Douglass (R) was one of the members of a Telegram chat that featured racist, antisemitic and violent discussions.

When one chat member discussed a friend of other chatters being in a relationship with “this very obese Indian woman for a period of time,” another replied, calling the woman “not Indian,” according to the Politico report.

“She just didn’t bathe often,” Douglass responded, according to Politico.

The messages obtained by Politico spanned for more than seven months and were part of a chat among Young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont.

Members of the Telegram chat group titled “RESTOREYR WAR ROOM” referred to Black people as “monkeys” and “the watermelon people,” according to the Politico report published Tuesday. They also discussed placing political rivals in gas chambers and sexually assaulting adversaries in the chat, Politico reported

GOP Rep. Cory Mills Judge issues a "protection against dating violence" restraining order against Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills. The Restraining order bars him from any contact with Lindsey Langston a Republican state committeewoman and Miss United States 2024.

A Florida judge issued a restraining order Tuesday against Republican Rep. Cory Mills of Florida for "protection against dating violence" after his ex-girlfriend accused him of threatening and harassing her.

In a petition filed in August, Lindsey Langston alleged that after they broke up, Mills threatened to blackmail her using nude images and videos and to physically harm anyone she dated.

“Cory continued to message me on Instagram accounts I run after blocking him and asking him to not contact me. The messages progressively got more threatening over time,” wrote Langston, a Republican state committeewoman and Miss United States 2024.

Tuesday's restraining order, issued by state Circut Judge Fred Koberlein Jr. of the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Columbia County, Florida, prohibits Mills from acts of violence against Langston and bars him from contacting her until Jan. 1.

ok so a pic of the flag with the swastika was taken from a virtual video call and it was pinned to the cubical wall with one of his own staffers next to it, but he is calling it vandalism ??

US Capitol Police investigating American Flag emblazoned with Swastika across it that was found in GOP lawmaker’s office

US Capitol Police are investigating “a vile and deeply inappropriate symbol” found in GOP Rep. Dave Taylor’s office, the congressman said in a statement.

The congressman’s office has not confirmed to CNN what the symbol was, but Politico reported that USCP was called after an American flag altered to include a swastika was found inside the Ohio Republican’s office in Washington, DC.

“I am aware of an image that appears to depict a vile and deeply inappropriate symbol near an employee in my office,” Taylor said in the statement.

“The content of that image does not reflect the values or standards of this office, my staff, or myself, and I condemn it in the strongest terms. Upon learning of this matter, I immediately directed a thorough investigation alongside Capitol Police, which remains ongoing. No further comment will be provided until it has been completed.”

The congressman’s office referred to the incident as “vandalism” in a release with Taylor’s statement.

When CNN reached out to USCP for comment, the agency sent an autoreply that its public information office is closed for routine business during the government shutdown.

Swastika spotted in Republican congressman's office prompts Capitol Police investigation

First spotted in Taylor’s office during a virtual meeting on Oct. 14, the flag, which features stripes forming the Nazi symbol, appeared to be pinned to a cubicle wall behind one of Taylor’s staffers, Politico first reported.

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, the staffer was identified as Angelo Elia, who is listed as the congressman's legislative correspondent on LegiStorm, a website that publishes congressional data and contact information.

Senate Republican denounces Young Republicans’ chat, breaking with Vance

Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) on Wednesday denounced the Young Republicans’ group chat in which leaders made racist and antisemitic jokes, breaking with Vice President Vance, who has sought to downplay the remarks.

In an interview on CNN’s “The Arena with Kasie Hunt,” Mullin noted the Young Republican National Federation — the GOP’s 15,000-member political organization for Republicans between 18 and 40 years old — condemned the chat and called for the immediate resignations of all those involved.

“All Republicans, including myself, 100 percent denounced that,” the Oklahoma senator said, adding, “It’s a serious situation. There’s no room in the Republican Party for that at all.”

“This is despicable and disgusting, and there’s zero — and everybody’s been perfectly clear — there’s zero room for this kind of behavior in politics as a whole, regardless of Republican or Democrat, but we hold our own accountable inside the Republican Party. We won’t allow that to happen,” he added.

Politico published a bombshell report this week, exposing thousands of text messages from a Young Republican group chat in which members played on racial stereotypes, used gay slurs and joked about gas chambers, slavery and rape.

One of the most prominent members of the chat — Peter Giunta, who is reportedly 31 years old — said, “I love Hitler,” in an exchange about appealing to delegates as the “most right wing person.”

Hunt asked Mullin if he agrees with Vance, who suggested the chat participants were just “kids” making “jokes” and that they shouldn’t be canceled for it.

Vance also said, in an interview on “The Charlie Kirk Show” on Wednesday, that he will make sure to advise his children to be careful of what they say publicly because they should assume “some scumbag is going to leak it in an effort to try to cause you harm or cause your family harm.”

“Well, I didn’t hear… the Vice President’s remarks, but I would never let my kids joke like that. That’s zero. There’s a solid no,” Mullin said.

Mullin recalled his grandfather describing the horrors of World War II and said he does not tolerate jokes about the Holocaust.

“My grandfather fought in World War II. He went over on Omaha Beach. He saw the despicable things that the Nazis did to not just the Jewish people, but to other countries and other races along the way. He went into a concentration camp,” Mullin said.

“And so it’s not, it’s not room to joke for me. It’s a hard stop, that you’re not associated with me, whatsoever, if you think that’s funny.”

Politico exposed racist and homophobic messages sent by leaders of the Kansas Young Republicans. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly said the state GOP modeled similar behavior in its own social media posts.

The Young Republicans surely had parents that were highly bigoted and hateful against blacks and other minorities. Maybe I wasn't in earshot if they did, but I don't recall my parents saying much of anything against minorities.
