US continues to go backward...

When I was teaching , kids too often came to class without a pencil. I bought a gross of pencils then divided the price by 144 and it came out to $0,04857 per pencil so I charged $.05 each. Damned near got a letter of reprimand in my file for profiting off of students.
I have zero sympathy for crybabies going to Washington with a reasonable salary and spending their time playing the market with insider information and becoming millionaires practically overnight. This crap must stop. Make it illegal and give them something to truly cry about.
The only way it will possibly become illegal is if we vote out the people that will not agree with it. Between the gerrymandering, incumbent advantages, and the large percentage of voters will never cross party lines, the politicians don't have much concern.

If the nation's voters quit focusing on the issues they want us to worry about (guns, abortion, transgender, gays, Christianity, immigrants etc) and focused on what we should be getting fixed (lobbying, insider trading, fair and open elections, limiting party power, budgets, debt etc) the nation would be far better off.

@RxCowboy

How do you respond to stuff like this without being condescending? Im not trying to be a jerk to what you are saying, just curious. Its a rando on Facebook whose mind is obviously made up and although I have no intention of responding, some of the comments about silence equaling complicity got me to thinking that ignoring this sort of thing might not be the best strategy.

If I ever respond to that type thing, which I have pretty much stopped, I usually put something to the effect of "I am also a skeptic, but I am equally skeptical. I don't just look at "big pharma" funding studies. I look at the people putting out all information and how they are benefitting from it. Often, they are docs that used to make $400K a year seeing patients which is pretty good, but now they are making millions. How can you be sure that they aren't biased by big $$$ too?"

If they might be receptive, I'lll post some data but the typical response is "mainstream media lies." But, I have to think it makes them wonder:

Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., received $23.5 million in contributions, grants and other revenue in 2022 alone — eight times what it collected the year before the pandemic began — allowing it to expand its state-based lobbying operations to cover half the country. Another influential anti-vaccine group, Informed Consent Action Network, nearly quadrupled its revenue during that time to about $13.4 million in 2022, giving it the resources to finance lawsuits seeking to roll back vaccine requirements as Americans’ faith in vaccines drops.
Two other groups, Front Line Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance and America’s Frontline Doctors, went from receiving $1 million combined when they formed in 2020 to collecting more than $21 million combined in 2022, according to the latest tax filings available for the groups.

Neither side thinks about this part often enough. We just cheer on the consolidation of power when our team is in charge.

That's been my concern about all of this. The Trump administration is doing everything they can to consolidate power in the executive branch-to the point where the doomers who are expressing concern about free and fair elections don't seem so far fetched. But the thing about the current administration is they are filled with incompetent people in powerful positions. On things like foreign policy this is creating disasters (pretty much the only thing political parties in India cab agree on right now is that we suck and China doesn't) but as far as going full authoritarian, they are pretty likely to screw it up.

The next person in power, and it will very likely be a pendulum swing to the left, probably will have far more capable people in positions of power in the federal government. And the current administration is providing precedent for authoritarian actions while giving the next person a playbook of what to do as well as what NOT to do if they want to continue to consolidate power.

Newsom is slimy, likes money, and smart enough to realize he doesn't have the political capital to punish fossil fuels at a federal level the way he can in California. But you give him ways to circumvent needing that political capital and you never know. Throw a true blue oil is the devil believer in there instead of him though and yeah its a problem.

We really need a Midwestern or southern democrat in 2028. Id argue moderate republican would work as well but those don't exist anymore, at least not with the political capital to unseat someone full MAGA right now.
