Russia Tricks Elijah Wood, Mike Tyson and Others to Record Videos for Anti-Ukraine Propaganda
Russia has employed a new tactic to spread misinformation about the war in
Ukraine, this time, using celebrities.
Knewz.com has learned that Russia is using
doctored videos of well-known American figures to spread misinformation and a spear campaign against President of Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
A report from
Microsoft states that Russia is using manipulated videos of celebrities, including
Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood and boxing champion Mike Tyson, to promote misinformation about the Ukrainian President.
According to the report, Microsoft’s Threat Analysis Center discovered these videos are being seen across Russian social media channels as well as on state-run news organizations within the country.
The videos have been created by an app called Cameo, where users can pay to create personalized messages from various celebrities. One of the videos being used features Wood advising President Zelenskyy to "get help" for "drug and alcohol abuse."
Genuine posts from Wood start at $340 on the Cameo app, but as
The New York Times noted, this video was "repurposed as part of Russia’s efforts to falsely denigrate Mr. Zelensky as a drug-addled neo-Nazi."
A statement from the actor's representative obtained by the
NYT stated that the message he recorded via Cameo had “in no way intended to be addressed to Zelensky or have anything at all to do with Russia or Ukraine or the war.”
Another features Kate Flannery, who played Meredith Palmer on the beloved TV comedy
The Office.

Flannery's video shows her holding up a bottle of whiskey, as a nod to her on-screen character, before she turned serious and "warned" President Zelensky against alcoholism. "Seriously, it will be wonderful... Just do it," she said in her "message."
Others whose likeness was being used without their knowledge include
Scrubs actor John McGinley,
Breaking Bad's Dean Norris, Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla Presley and former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson.

NBC News obtained a statement from Zelenskyy's press service: “Russia has been waging an information war for many years — not only with Ukraine, but with the whole world at various levels.”
“The civilized world and all corporations and companies that work with information in one way or another should be united in the face of this threat,” the statement said.
Microsoft wrote in the report that “Kremlin officials and Russian state-sponsored propaganda have long promoted the false claim that" the Ukrainian president "struggles with substance abuse; however, this campaign marks a novel approach by pro-Russia actors seeking to further the narrative in the online information space.”

NBC News reported that representatives for Wood, Flannery and Presley all believed they were sending videos to someone struggling with addiction and "had no intention of denigrating Ukraine or its president."
The news outlet reviewed the videos and reported they never directly addressed Zelenskyy himself, rather a person named "Vlad" and text overlay indicated it was the Ukrainian President.
“Kate unequivocally, 100% supports Ukraine and this has been very upsetting,” Flannery’s representative told NBC News.
Presley’s representative said, “It was not intended to be addressed" to the Ukrainian president "or have anything at all to do with Russia or Ukraine or the war."
Tyson's team echoed the same sentiment: “The current videos being circulated are false. Mr. Tyson has zero involvement with providing information and creating such content.”
According to
American officials quoted by
The New York Times in a report from October 2023,
Russia is frustrated with the substantial economic support and
military aid Ukraine has been receiving from the U.S. and Europe.
American officials said they are convinced that Mr. Putin intends to try to end U.S. and European support for Ukraine by using his spy agencies to push propaganda supporting pro-Russian political parties and by stoking conspiracy theories with new technologies.
The Russia disinformation aims to increase support for candidates opposing Ukraine aid with the ultimate goal of stopping international military assistance to Kyiv.
The propaganda campaign comes at a time when Ukraine aide from the U.S. is under threat. On December 6, Senate
Republicans voted to block $110.5 billion to Ukraine (and
Israel) in an emergency spending bill.
Time reported that Republicans wanted to add immigration policy pertaining to the U.S.-
Mexico border to the bill.
U.S. President
Joe Biden urged the Senate to come to an agreement before the holiday recess. “Republican Congressmen are willing to give Putin the greatest gift he could hope for and abandon our global leadership," he said.
