Spring Game Observations

Post them here!

I am particularly curious about observations about the quarterbacks (as most people likely are) and newcomers.

What position groups appear to be a strength/weakness?

Maybe this post isn't in the correct thread. Based on the numbers, we don't have a good QB. Well, we don't have good players in all positions due to severely inadequate NIL. The current transfers are from vastly smaller programs and probably don't have the talent to win in the Big 12.

Anyway...As I predicted when the NIL era began, OSU football is over and done with. That’s almost verbatim.
Say what y’all will about Gundy—he had an unbelievable 18-year winning streak. Who thought OSU football would’ve been that successful? I thought that would never happen. Gundy proved me wrong. I know we only won three games, but no one can ever forget about that astonishing 18-year run. Can't fully blame Gundy for that... We simply do not have the required amount of NIL we'd need for successful above .500

Gundy achieved that success by developing under-recruited and overlooked players. He took rosters filled with only two- and three-star rankings and turned OSU football into one of the most successful programs in all of college football.

I predicted the downfall of OSU football because of NIL. And sadly, I’m probably right about that. Gundy will never have developed juniors and seniors again. If there are juniors and seniors on the roster, it now means they weren’t good enough to be picked away by richer football programs.

OSU will never come close to offering the NIL money needed to be successful in this era. It’s over. We’ll never have success again... unless something changes the current madness.

Hopefully, I’m wrong, and successful seasons will come sporadically—maybe winning seasons every 3–5 years. I think that’s all we can hope for.

Regardless, I’m a die-hard OSU football and basketball fan. I’ll never be a bandwagon fan. I sure wish we could win a national championship before my time is over... but the 2011 season will forever remain the closest we’ll get to playing in a national championship game.

Y’all can react negatively to my post—I gave my opinion, that’s all. After the conclusion of the 2025–2026 season, I’ll be sure to tag those who reacted negatively. It won’t be fun to say “I told you so.”

I have a box/club seat (thanks, Bitcoin). Y’all are more than welcome to stop by and listen to the conversations happening there. My friends and I donate a significant sum every year. Believe me when I say this: fundraising efforts have been fruitless. In the Big 12, OSU ranks last in NIL money. Unless NIL funding quadruples—and even that may not be enough—OSU football is in dire straits.

My friends and I have tried to buy a QB capable of winning in the Big 12. We’ve tried to secure a talented O-line, to no avail. These players cost a fortune, unfortunately. And we’re nowhere near close to acquiring the talent needed to win in the Big 12. $125,000 for a QB is insane. O-linemen are asking for $25,000-$100,000+ to come to OSU. This NIL era has destroyed football—and it's severely impacted programs like OSU.

Regarding QBs: Rangel isn’t the guy, nor is the QB who followed Doug Meacham from TCU. Flores and Smith are the front-runners so far, but they’re going to have to run for their lives every passing play. The O-line is just bad—worse than the 2024–2025 O-line. Obviously, there’s still time for improvement… but it’s going to take a miracle.

I could go on and on. Unless a miracle occurs, by the end of the 2025–2026 season, both the offense and defense will likely rank between 100th and 130th.

In the 2024–2025 prediction thread, I predicted a 4-win season. My donor friends and I are privy to the state of the football program—and it's not good. At all.

Y'all are absolutely free to join my box/club any time during the 2025-2026 season. N Bookmark this post and send me a message during home games and I'll let you in my club. Seriously... Let me know and you're more than welcome to join my friends and I.

All that brag about your money yet you are too tight to join the Athletic Village on this website. Haha.

I don’t disagree with everything you’ve stated but I do believe that there is a path for OSU to have sustainable winning seasons with playoff appearances and wins every now and then, take ASU for example, they absolutely beat Texas ($$$) up and down the field and if it had not been for a blatant no call they would have won the game so I think the gap is closer than you are making it out to be.

A lot of these players getting big money are not worth the money they are getting and that is because right now we are seeing an over correction of NIL where we went from no money to everybody throwing big money at every player to show how much money they have. You are already seeing the market correct itself, starting SEC QB was getting 4 mil and whatever the details are, he was told to get bent.

OSU still has things to offer besides money but having some NIL can help, look at Ollie, he could have gone anywhere and gotten paid more but he came back to OSU so your claim that we will never have juniors and seniors again is already been proven false.

The problem for OSU right now is Gundy has been choosing stability over innovation and it backfired on him badly, it remains to be seen whether he can change himself, if not OSU needs to move on. We need to be a school where young coaches can come in and coach and move up and a place where young players can come in and play to be noticed, once they are here, we need to keep as many as we can, some will leave, some leave Ohio state and Alabama, some will stay if we recruit the right kids.

I was going to type something along these lines. Hopefully the House settlement w real NIL guardrails creates a salary cap so to speak. I think this spring’s comments from returning players regarding coaching and Gundy’s comments regarding new staff approach to recruiting speak volumes to our problems. Average was coming. The old NIL sped up our return. And by average I think more 6-9 win seasons w an occasional 10+.

Is it a coincidence that in 3/4 high profile sports our men’s teams are struggling around 500 in the wild wild west NIL?

QB from Tennessee pulled the old give me $4 million or I bolt! Huepel showed him the door and he ends up at UCLA for slightly over $1 million when his original deal at Tennessee was $2.4 million! 😂🤣😂

I'm still confused on how we don't have the NIL money to compete in the Big 12. It's not like we are fighting Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, etc... for pay to players.
