Portal Recruiting and Roster Updates

I know Sampson has complained about Houston’s NIL, which is hilarious that a known cheater is complaining. I can’t believe they don’t have a huge budget with Ferttits backing, and with the players they have I assume they’ve all been paid one way or the other. Cenac and Fleming were big time recruits. Sharp, Tuggker, and Uzan are big time names that deserve big days. Without the numbers being public, I’d never believe a word Kelvin Sampson says.
A thought about Sampson: He royally screwed up in Indiana, making illegal phone calls to recruits, lying about it, and in general running an out of control program. He got the boot and the severest sanction by the NCAA (show cause). The fact that phone calls today aren't a big deal doesn't mitigate breaking the rules.

He was fired at 11:00 am and hired by 3:00 pm by his friend Gregg Popovich at the San Antonio Spurs. (They knew each other from coaching an Olympic team.) Pop told him to name his job title. He met Sampson at the baggage claim of the airport, and that night they were already working at practice with guys like Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobli. This began the long journey for Sampson to develop a deeper understanding of the game and to become a better basketball coach. It's possible or even likely that he's not where he is today without the fall at Indiana.

So you are right that Sampson's mistakes forever tarnish his career, but that's not the end of the story. We all screw up. Wouldn't it be great if there was a Pop for all of us when we're down to pick us up and set us in the right direction to do good things in life.

It's those years in Norman that set him on his wayward path...Coach Pop could have had a full time job reprogramming the filth that came out of Norman.
 
Eddie was also an effective disciplinarian and it was a totally different time. NIL has given a lot of guys a sense of entitlement because they are getting paid regardless of how they perform. When you start getting paid, you better offer a return on investment or start packing.
I see posts about entitlement and different times, but I also saw some teams in the NCAA tournament that played intelligent, team offense and intense, aggressive defense start to finish. The NIL era didn't seem to prevent those teams and players from leaving it all on the court.

You are correct, those teams can and do exist. My guess is that those teams are built on high character, high effort players who don't lack internal motivation rather than the kind of "second chance" guys that Eddie Sutton found success with. In other words, you didn't see any of those teams with 3 of their most talented players on the bench due to suspension in the first game of their postseason tournament. My point is that you really have no leverage to motivate talented but lazy/complacent players if they are already getting paid.

I am simply advocating that Lutz makes his living by bringing in the right pieces from the start rather than taking chances on guys that already raise significant questions about character and effort from the very beginning, or being loyal to players on the roster who have significant lingering questions in those areas.

I love a good redemption story and hope that there are a lot of college athletes out there who can turn things around if they aren't in the right place. But for every good redemption story, there are going to be far more misses. From an organizational culture standpoint, you will be much better off bringing in guys with strong intangibles from the beginning.

I also want to add that I just read your post about Kelvin Sampson and Gregg Popovich above and I truly appreciate your heart to see people get a second chance to find success after failures.

Is Allmond signed? Crazy a guy can watch how the program did this year and not want to leave? I’m sure he got a $1M+ offer so maybe that’s why he’s staying or if he signed he’s already locked in.
 
Why does no one do a 2-3 yr contract. Say you’re worth $100,000. Sign a 2 yr deal with us and we will give you $250-300k. Seems like stability would be worth the little bump in salary

Or better yet incentive based. Here’s $75k cash up front. Rest you earn & can make up to $200k. Just a thought
