OT College FB Playoff, Hiring/Portal Thread

Not finding the old thread so posting a new one since it feels like there’s as much off the field news starting now.

First: the committee. My god. So ND was 10, BYU 11, Miami 12? BYU gets spanked, so Miami jumps ND. WTF? Bama gets spanked, doesn’t move? Just stop doing the weekly show for god’s sakes. The contradictions that come out every week just lead to making the whole process look like a joke.

Notre Dame. Get over yourself. It’s embarrassing enough that the rest of college football agreed to a special clause for them regarding the playoffs. The special status stuff though? Join a conference or stfu. The ACC lobbied for their full time members, not their side piece. This is how you wanted it-live with it.

Utah announces $500million private equity deal. I think it’s the first of many to come by schools individually. We saw with the B1G deal how hard it is to align an entire conference behind a deal, schools are gonna do it on their own.

NCAA spring meetings : The fb calendar has got to be fixed, period, end of story. This is a multibillion $$$ business still being held back by political affiliation and the way it used to be done. Move the portal back to April and and move the season forward.

It’s gonna be an interesting offseason in a number of ways imo. Seismic changes in the sport are far from over.

The more I think about it the more I can see why Notre Dame fans are justifiably upset. Not because they deserve to be in-they don't. But they spent weeks being told they were going to get a pass for their loss to Miami only to have the rug pulled out from under them when it mattered. If we had only seen the final rankings they wouldn't have had a gripe. You cant say you deserve to be in when the last spot goes to a team that beat you.

The committee needs to do it like basketball-tons of speculation but don't tip their hand and everyone finds out once its said and done what they were thinking.

Exactly. As much as I despise ND, I get the outrage. How the committee sits there for weeks and says they’re not being compared head to head and btw, ND has better losses is beyond me.
Having said that, they spent weeks building that narrative and then just switched ND & Miami & say it’s because BYU lost?

Hartline just made a great hire at USF.

Director of operations and recruiting:

The CFP is a joke. All the talk of Miami vs ND and never a mention of BYU despite them having a better record, better losses, better strength of schedule and better strength of record. When the SEC announced a move to 9 conference games, the CFP committee almost tripped over themselves in their rush to get to a microphone to say strength of schedule mattered. Obviously, they didn't mean for that to apply to the Big 12....but they will use it plenty next year to justify putting 9 win SEC teams in.

We are 2 years into the 12-team playoff and this is the number of at large teams that have been invited by conference: SEC=6, Big10=5, ACC=2, Big 12=0. The committee is relegating the Big 12 to group of 5 status.

I'd say it was obvious last year the Big XII didn't produce a team worthy of an at-large. BYU was borderline, but there wasn't as strong an argument as there is this year.

The thing about BYU last year is that they beat SMU head-to-head but SMU got the at large bid. One could argue that SMU deserved it because they had more wins and got to their conference championship game, and that's not a bad argument, but if that applies for SMU over BYU last year, then it should apply to BYU over ND or UM this year. It's just ludicrous that an 11-win power 4 team wasn't ever seriously considered. Sitake was right when he said "we probably won't get in, but can you at least put our logo on the screen when you are discussing ND and UM".

Add in the fact that the committee said they wouldn’t penalize SMU last year for the cvg-win or lose. Then this year they drop BYU for losing the ccg, leave Bama in the same spot.
