Lutz doesn’t earn a “thumbs up” just because we notched a win. UCF is 9–8 in conference play, and their strength of schedule is weaker than ours.
Sure, a win is a win — but this one feels more like a placebo than real progress. My friends and trusted sources are right (I'm also a booster) the entire roster will hit the transfer portal. After the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season, if he finishes below .500 in conference play, he's gone.
There’s also serious frustration among boosters about the cost of this roster. It’s hard to justify donating significant money when the return is a disappointing season. On top of that, resentment toward the AD is growing. I’m in that camp — it feels like a series of poor decisions have put us in this position. It feels that way, because of the reality of the situation.
Side note — regarding the football program:
Believe me when I say this: the AD promised an “all-in” contract for a specific coach, then completely blindsided boosters and alumni by hiring Eric Morris instead.
There’s also this narrative floating around that Mike Gundy refused to use the transfer portal, which supposedly led to a disastrous season and ultimately his firing the following year. But that’s not the full story.
Gundy''s firing came down to control. Gundy had full authority over the football program — to the point where the AD’s influence was minimal. Then suddenly, the AD publicly declared that every sport would receive equal NIL support. That announcement came after Gundy was denied the funding he needed to keep the program competitive.
Call it what you want, but a lot of us see a power struggle — and the football program paid the price. And now the basketball program is paying the price... The AD's incompetence is on full-display. Next year will be another disaster.
