Most Forgotten Cowboys

Walt Garrison
Here is a list of several. Then one that stuck out to me was Walt Garrison, a real cowboy.

WR Curtis Mayfield, Dallas Spruce, 1987-90: all-Big Eight in 1989, with 93 career receptions.

OL Reggie Richardson, Dallas Samuell, 1977-79: 1979 all-Big Eight lineman.

QB J.W. Walsh, Denton Guyer, 2012: Walsh's career is just one season old, but the Cowboys rarely have gone to DFW for a quarterback.

RB Gerald Hudson, Waxahachie, 1988-90: 1990 NCAA rushing champ, with 1,692 yards.

RB Walt Garrison, Lewisville, 1963-65: 1965 all-Big Eight, then became an iconic Dallas Cowboy.

DE Mike Woolridge, Cedar Hill, 1989-92: 1992 all-Big Eight pick.

DE Victor DeGrate, DeSoto, 2003-06: One of several excellent Cowboys from DeSoto.

LB: Dwayne Levels, Richardson, 1998-01: Strong leader who unfortunately played on four losing teams.

LB: Justin Gent, Irving MacArthur, 2007-10: Long-time potential fulfilled with strong senior season.

LB: James Spencer, Garland, 1980-83: Excellent Jimmy Johnson linebacker who was plagued by knee injuries.

DB Vernon Grant, DeSoto, 2002-04: Team leader and budding star who was killed in a car crash before his senior season.

DB Darrent Williams, Fort Worth Wyatt, 2001-04: Smallish cornerback who rose to star status, then made it in the NFL before he was tragically killed.

DB Jacob Lacey, Garland Namaan Forest, 2005-08: Still going strong in the NFL.

DB Rod Fisher, Dallas South Oak Cliff, 1980-83: Solid cornerback for Jimmy Johnson.

P Quinn Sharp, 2009-12, Mansfield Summit: all-American and a triple-threat foot – field goals, kickoffs and punts. Excellent at them all.

I have never seen anyone at OSU hit people harder than Donald Booker and Lucien Antoine.

I loved Donald Booker, but the hardest hitters (imo) were Mark Moore and John Corker. I could be wrong about Corker, but if so it's because he might be the best college defensive player I ever saw play at OSU. I won't argue with anyone who thinks that was Leslie O'Neal, Kevin Williams, etc., but the pro careers of those guys likely influence some opinions. Corker had a terrific start on his pro career, a prototype LB/edge rusher before it was even a type. He then blew out a knee, back when a ruptured ACL was basically career-ending.

Ironically, the single hardest hit I saw at OSU was compliments of Ronnie Williams, our starting QB at the time. He threw a bad interception down the south sideline and the DB was running it back when Williams came at him full speed ahead. The DB smartly stepped OB while still moving forward. Williams didn't care, he was pissed off and looking for payback. He successfully targeted the guy and absolutely drilled him, causing the ball to fly up into the front row. My initial thought was the kid might be dead, thankfully he was not. The next season Williams converted to WR at OSU, then went on to a moderately successful NFL career with the Houston Oilers.

Yeah, those guys sound awesome. They were before my time of being alive, but I wish I could have seen that!

Probably the most amazing multi sport athlete at OSU that should never be forgotten is Dick Soergel. The guy was an absolutely phenomenal athlete! He was also the winning pitcher on our only NCAA Championship Baseball team in addition to being a standout football player! Why he isn’t already on the Ring of Honor is a massive oversight and a definite case of recency bias. I go to church with his daughter!

You are absolutely correct. Here is a summary of his accomplishments. I tagged Larry Reece on Facebook with your suggestion.

Just thinking about running backs. There have been some dudes that toted the ball for us.

Kendall Hunter
Jaylen Warren
Chuba Hubbard
Justice Hill
David Thompson
Joseph Randall
Tatum Bell
Keith Toston
Vernand Morency
Dantrell Savage
Garrett Limbrick
Kye Staley
Chris Carson obviously qualifies as one of the most forgotten

How about Quinton Moore?

Watching it live, I thought the decapitated the guy.

I was thinking of Markelle Martin momentarily sending Jevan Snead into another realm in the Cotton Bowl.
These days, Snead wouldn’t have been allowed out of the sideline tent after that!

*this is an OSU player delivering the hit. Hardest hit I recall was either ZRob vs Tech or ZRob vs Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.
