Favorite Moment From Gundy Era?

So there are a lot of great moments to choose from during Gundy’s 20 years. The 2011 Fiesta is undoubtedly a high water mark, but I think we’ll all have different ones from through the years that stand out to each of us, so I’m curious what yours are.

Mine?

#1. Think it was 2008 when we went to Columbia to play Mizzou with Chase Daniel. OU-TX had happened earlier that day and Mizzou was set to move to #1 if they beat us.
I was in Columbia that day, went to Harpo’s and a few other places pregame. A friend had rented a limo from KC for us and we rolled around the stadium and tailgate area standing up through the sunroof and waving an OSU flag. Let’s just say it provoked a pretty negative reaction.😝 I shouted that the MAN’S in town! They were arrogant pricks that day and it was like being patted on the head and told ‘you’ve got a nice little team, but…’
Then the game kicks off. I had a sideline pass so I’m down there with the team. Erin Andrews is patrolling the sideline-absolute complete fn smokeshow, my god.
Anyway, Desmond Davis comes out of nowhere to make some critical catches after Dez got knocked out early, and Kendall Hunter makes the announcement that he’s arrived that night, & our defense finds a way to make critical stops against Daniel, Macklin & company.
After the game I go under the bowl on the south end of the stadium where the visitors locker room is and players are meeting with their families. Mizzou fans are harassing them and outta the locker room comes a shirtless Doug Meachem giving it to them with both barrels.
I think that night, for me, told me we’d arrived. We were living in a world where 5 of the 6 B12 South teams were ranked, but I felt like we could compete.

#2. 2011 vs Baylor in Stillwater. RGIII & company rolled into BPS and it’s a huge matchup. Defense stuffs them on an early 4th down and the next thing you know it’s 49-3.
We knew that team was special, but the way that we dominated them showed that we were legit National title contenders.

#3. 2022 last Bedlam. Beating them, Riley & Williams in the last Bedlam was incredible. Just the fact that they were leaving and that the conference was now decimated, it just felt amazing to give them the L on their way out.

I have a lot of favorite plays, but I think my favorite moment is a mix.

It’s what he turned Stillwater into on Saturdays.

When I was in school, I’m sure there was some tailgating but it didn’t leave an impression. We camped out for basketball tickets, no one planned their day around “going to the game.” His teams and rebuild completely changed the Saturday experience into something that fans of other schools have told me out paces just about any other place they’ve been.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Favorite games: (a theme here)

1) Final Bedlam - Apparently Gundy sold his soul for this one, but that one felt so special
2) 2011 Bedlam - Final game as a student, will never forget
3) 2021 Bedlam - Felt like a curse was broken. Definitely thought OU was driving to go win the game on the final drive

Favorite plays:
1) Blatnick scoop and run to the 1. Don't know how that wasn't #1 on that video! The rout was on with that play. Maybe it's because I was in the stands, but that play is etched into my memory forever

2) The Collin Oliver sack

Non Bedlam games:

1) 2011 K state - I usually tailgated and sat mid level in the student section. We decided one time to go super early and sit as low as possible. It was a great game for it

2) Both Fiesta Bowls

3) UGA - There had been games before this one, but it felt like a we've arrived nationally moment, even though that all flipped the next week. My now wife went to UGA, so it's nice to tell her we still have scoreboard. We have scoreboard on UGA, Bama, OU, and Notre Dame!

4) All road games I went to that were wins. I won't mention them all, but it's a great feeling walking out of a road stadium with a win.

The games everyone has mentioned are special. I'll add a couple more.

Bedlam 2001. Gundy was OC. We went 3-8 that year, but we won Bedlam, and that game seemed like a turning point. That game kicked off the Josh Fields and Rashaun Woods show that scored a lot of points in the following seasons.

Bedlam 2002. That game was a beat down and proved 2001 wasn't a fluke.

Ohhh, that was a classic vs Klein & Kstate. Then Herbstreit postgame with the earthquake!

My top two are 2013 against Baylor in the cold and then 2008 against Mizzou. Being from Missouri all friends talked all week how they were going to pound us and I kept telling them it wasn’t going to happen. They had to eat a lot crow after that one.

My son’s first game in person is his favorite. The come back win against West Virginia with Corndog. I think we were down 17 going into the 4th. He still talks about that game.

As many of you know, I'm a big Insight Bowl enthusiast. I initially was an Insight.com Bowl enthusiast, but recently I relented and saw where the tides were turning and joined the Insight Bowl crew.

We get together every December in Tempe and talk about some classic matchups like that Minnesota - Texas Tech Shootout.

Me? I will always remember and savor the 2007 Insight Bowl when we dismantled those inbred clowns from Indiana. They were talking all this smack outside. Hitting each other in the teeth with blue and white horseshoes. wearing those bright red striped pants, pouring milk all over each other and throwing folding chairs across the parking lot. Their chants of, WE'RE THE HOOSIERS, YOU'RE THE ...." I was floored. I was embarrassed. I was humiliated. They made a fool of me... and in from of my family! I felt a knot and a tightening in my stomach. It took all the strength a man can posses to resist the temptation of a discharge.

I covered the eyes of my younger wife and my daughter. But I didn't a way to cover my son's eyes to see this inhumanity (We could only purchase four tickets, so my older wife sat and waited for us in the Chevy Astrovan). To this day, I feel like seeing that human garbage at the Indiana tailgate outside Sun Devil Stadium made my son respect me less as a man; and it may have been what led him on the life he chose. You know...the face piercings, the thefts from nursing homes, the nitrous huffing, the hours he's wasted his life away in cyber cafes and making money to feed his addiction by sending fake ransom notes via fax to families in Eastern Europe. Those Indiana bastards stole my son from me.

One year we had Indiana coach Bill Lynch to come speak at one of our Insight Bowl fanatic pancake luncheons. I'm sure you remember that first class piece of crap. I berated him to his face for at least 45 minutes before the rest of the group decided I had done to much and made me sit alone on the overflow conference room of the La Quinta. I was forced to finish my pancakes alone.

But yeah, the 2007 Insight Bowl over Indiana was pretty much the perfect day for me.

We beat those Indiana bastards and after the game, we celebrated and rang in the new year on the Painted desert landscape of Ol' Arizona. My older wife had rested in the van during the game and joined us. We danced, we sang, we lit fireworks, we ate tuna fish sandwiches over the fire we had started off the I-17 freeway offramp. We spent some time with other like minded individuals in Colorado City, Arizona. It was our last vacation as one big happy family.

That Bowl victory was the day my manhood was threatened, but Mike Gundy, Dez Bryant, and Donovan Woods all defended my and my family's honor. It was our last day as a family. As soon as we got back to Oklahoma, the son went wayward. But that one fine night. Mike Gundy made my family whole again.

Go Pokes.

I'll always remember the 2007 Insight Bowl.

All of those are great moments, it would be hard to pick one.

As a long time football fan starting with Charlie Weatherbie and Terry Miller in 1975, my favorite thing from the Gundy years was all that winning. Winning on a consistent basis wasn't something we ever expected prior to Coach Gundy. Gundy gave us expectations.

Thanks Coach!

So if the Astro Van sat six what two got the bench seat in the back?

Uga was nice. bedlam 2011 was great. I still think 2013 Baylor was the favorite memory. After a rebuild in 2012 we were off to a slow start.. then the SI allegations came. I feel that was just a great all around team. I miss seeing Chelf out there. Anyway, they developed so greatly over the course of the season ans how hyped Baylor was going into that game.. it was just unreal how we annihilated them. Not sure if it was Mikes call but the last TD in garbage time made it seem that he was paying back Briles for running it up on everyone.

I’m afraid we won’t ever see this atmosphere again in BPS. Going to the boneyard with GIA
