Witness on Epstein's time in prison and circumstances surrounding death
Included in the new tranche of files is a document relating to Jeffrey Epstein's time at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre (MCC) in New York.
It details evidence the FBI recorded in 2019 from an unnamed "captain" at the prison, who describes Epstein's movements in and out of a "special housing unit", and being taken on and off "suicide watch".
They allege Epstein "preferred not to have a cellmate" and "engaged in manipulative behaviour to avoid having one, including requesting to see a psychologist".
They add that "on or about" 23 July 2019 he was "found unresponsive on the floor of his cell with a homemade piece of fabric on his chest" and heard he may have been "faking consciousness" because he was "observed opening his eyes and making other suspicious movements not consistent with an unconscious state".
Epstein claimed his cellmate tried to take his life, it says.
The document later says the prison warden advised that Epstein should not be housed alone, and emphasised the need for "30-minute checks" and "unannounced rounds".
On 10 August 2019 - the day Epstein died - the witness was informed that Epstein had been found unresponsive in his cell. When he inquired about a cellmate, he reported being "surprised" to hear that he did not have one.
The document notes that later "staff admitted... they did not complete rounds" at 03:00 and 05:00, and that the camera system in the unit was down at the time of Epstein's death.
