Cowgirl Basketball Recruiting: The Hoyt Era

A lot comes in to play..

A lot of Oklahoma kids grow up going to OSU and OU games and they want something new. Esp with social media connecting kids to far places much easier

Coach’s personalities play a big role. Basketball has smaller staffs and it only takes super close connection to a coach to fall in love with a program.

Coaches sell the moon and lie to kids all the time. ā€œCome be a big fish in a small pondā€ sales pitches. Where others are honest and pretty open on coming in to compete for a spot etc. If you promise a freshman a starting spot over ā€œcompeting for a spotā€ it opens eyes a little more

many AAU kids play all over in regional and all star tournaments. It exposes kids to new big cities and sometimes they fall in love with the location also

Not necessarily buying into the excuses…we’ve missed on 10+ instate the past couple seasons. Some to Oklahoma so the big fish in a small pond is irrelevant. Most of the kids are going to P4 schools. Not like they’re going to Wichita State or New Mexico. We have an instate problem…it’s okay to call a spade, a spade!! They’re HS coaches in Oklahoma that will tell you the same thing.

Doesn’t mean we have an overall recruiting problem. She does however get instate kids out of the portal to come home like a Micah gray, terryn Milton, Claire chastain, Rylee langerman. I’m not saying she needs to land everyone, it’s unrealistic without a doubt..she does however need to a better job protecting her backyard. Oklahoma has seen a big uptick in D1 girls HS prospects. Kind of need to capitalize on it.
