You've got three things going on: getting into the tournament under the rules, the rules to get in, and the seeding.
Under the current rules, Notre Dame shouldn't get in over Miami. You know who's fault is that Notre Dame didn't get in? Notre Dame. Win your games.
The rules to get in: Clearly flawed that would allow James Madison and Tulane get in before Notre Dame.
The seeding: Weird. Too many rematches.

How the College Football Playoff works: Schedule, selections, rankings, byes and more
This is the new format and how teams are picked for the College Football Playoff, where semifinals rotate among the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar Bowls.

- 12 teams will be selected to the Playoff field, with the selection committee's five highest-ranked conference champions earning automatic bids. These five highest-ranked conference champions are in regardless of where they rank in the top 25, even if they're not in it
- This was seen in the first CFP rankings in 2025, when Memphis wasn't ranked in the top 25 but received a projected automatic bid as the fifth highest-ranked conference champion
- The four highest-ranked teams regardless of conference champion status will receive the top four seeds in the playoff and a first-round bye.
- In the inaugural 12-team playoff in 2024, the four highest-ranked conference champions were seeded 1-4 and each will received a first-round bye
- Teams seeded 5-12 will play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team

The tie breaker rules that were used to allow a 7-5 crappy Duke team to go to ACC championship game over Miami and an over ranked Alabama team to go to SEC championship game over Ole Miss and aTm is the real culprit. Also, stop with the guarantee bids for a ranked Gof5 team. This isn’t March Madness looking for Cinderella.
There is always good be controversy. 12 is too many, especially if you really aren’t selecting the best 12. IMO, 8 may the right number.
