We are stuck with Boynton for at least 2 more years and it’s likely 3 due to the payout. What’s interesting is that he makes more than 2x per yr what Creighton’s McDermott makes. But you would think looking at the tournament success and salary that McDermott would be a hot commodity at a P5 school. Maybe he is and maybe he just likes Omaha. He did coach at Iowa St and was massively underwhelming. Really no better than Boynton. Then look at Shaka Smart. Successful at VCU. Great recruiting at TX. Mediocre results. Now he seems to be thriving at Marquette. Maybe same thing is happening for Capel at Pitt (although it is early and he only finished 6th) but this yr alone he has more tournament wins than Boynton.
Boynton is not showing he is willing to make the changes necessary to have sustained success. He doesn’t recruit true pg’s. He doesn’t recruit players that show a ton of competitive spirit. He doesn’t coach players to fit specific roles. He has even said he doesn’t believe in role players.
Maybe a change of scenery will allow his coaching style to prevail but it sure as heck isn’t here (15 games BELOW .500 in conference play w best finsh 5th place).
